Whether someone loves or hates the isekai genre, Kugane Maruyama’s Overlord has something to cater to everyone. The series provides a fresh perspective on common isekai tropes, which can be refreshing for isekai lovers. As for those on the fence, they probably won’t find any of the aspects that give the genre a bad reputation among fans. In a lot of ways, Overlord sets itself apart from most isekai anime-manga series.

However, Maruyama spelled out the exact thing during an interview that made Overlord stand out. And it’s the protagonist, Ainz Ooal Gown, who is the life and soul of the series. His characterization gives the much-needed depth to his story usually lacking in most isekai shows. Maruyama spoke at length about different aspects of Overlord and the thought process behind Ainz, so let’s delve into it!

Despite being one of the best fantasy anime stories in recent years, Overlord has persistently failed to attract a larger fan base compared to other series. This made many in the anime community scratch their heads, wondering why a series as well-constructed as this one could not connect with everyone on a deeper level.

Interestingly, the author of the series, Kugane Maruyama, had foreseen this. In an interview, he admitted that he had never thought Overlord would even gain the number of fans it has now. This raises a very important question about what contributes to a series’ popularity and why, despite its many strengths, Overlord has not been able to gain a larger and more devoted fan base. The answer to that was already conveyed by the creator.

A year and a half ago, it was announced that Neill Blomkamp, the director of District 9, Elysium, Chappie, Demonic, and Gran Turismo, was preparing to go into production on an alien abduction thriller called They Found Us, which had Joel Kinnaman of The Suicide Squad and the RoboCop remake attached to star. At first, the plan was to film in Australia, but then the decision was made to film in Saudia Arabia instead. About seven months after the first announcement, pre-production shut down so the project could rework its financial structure while hostility in the region where filming was going to take place increased due to the Israel-Gaza conflict. Now, Deadline reports that They Found Us is moving forward again, with the filming location shifting back over to Australia and Julius Avery of Overlord and The Pope’s Exorcist replacing Blomkamp as director.

Directed by Naoyuki Itō and animated by Madhouse, Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom is a continuation of season four of Overlord, the anime. The actual plot of the film has almost nothing to do with the series. You can watch it thinking it's a high fantasy film about invasion and war, and only be confused a couple of times. The plot: the Sacred Kingdom has been attacked by the Demon Emperor Jaldabaoth and his army of half humans. The kingdom's best paladin, Remedios Custodio, leads a small team to the neighbouring Sorcerer Kingdom to ask for aid. His Sorcerous Majesty is a huge skeleton, an undead, and the focus of the film. He is not the main character, however....

Back in the day, I was one of those anime fans who'd collect anime magazines and cut out the artwork so I could tape it to my closet door. This was back before streaming services and me having access to anime conventions full of vibrant wallscrolls and artist alleys. Basically, anime magazines were the only way I could get a hold of anime art... unless I used my high school's computer lab to print out grainy images. That said, one magazine I did Not cut apart was Newtype. With it's thicker covers, plastic wrap and free anime DVD to give us a taste of a new series that, gasp, wasn't airing on Toonami, reading Newtype felt like a must-have anime experience in the early 2000s. Full of exclusive features, interviews and other anime goodies, the magazine felt like a physical version of what we get from anime websites today. Before,...

Set within the dark fantasy world initially created through its acclaimed anime series and novels, Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom brings the epic narrative to theaters for the first time. Picking up directly after the climactic events of Season 4, this film immerses viewers in its sophisticated political intrigue and emotional character drama.
For those unfamiliar with Overlord, it takes place primarily in the magical realm of the New World. Though initially appearing like a typical fantasy land, the New World harbors complex moral ambiguities much like our own. Its human inhabitants wrestle with issues ranging from prejudice to philosophical debates on justice and power.
Meanwhile, the non-human races also face discrimination even as they strive for acceptance. These deeper themes of society are cleverly woven into the anime’s pulse-pounding battlefield scenes and conspiracies between kingdoms. Yet through it all towers the enigmatic and opportunistic figure of Ains Ooal Gown, ruler of the undead Sorcerer Kingdom.

Spider-Man has long been Marvel’s biggest asset, recognized as the most popular comic book character of all time. So it’s no surprise that Marvel continues to expand on the character through new comic stories, movies, and animated series.
One of the most anticipated projects is the upcoming animated series, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Styled after classic comic book art, the series promises a fresh take on the character with a new cast. Notably, Hudson Thames will take over the role of Spider-Man from Tom Holland.
Earlier reports suggested a November 2024 release, but recent rumors indicate the series has been delayed to 2025. While it’s a slight delay, fans will still be disappointed by the wait.
The original source, Nic Gregory, still lists the release date as November 2024. However, this information may be outdated or inaccurate, as we speculated earlier. This raises questions, especially in light of the following...

Spain has a long and fruitful tradition of producing horror films that elevate the genre and become enduring classics domestically and abroad – think Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza’s “[Rec],” J.A. Bayona’s “El Orphanage” or Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar nominee “Pan’s Labyrinth.” This year’s San Sebastian Film Festival is debuting a new candidate to join that prestigious list of modern classics, Pedro Martín-Calero’s “The Wailing.”
In the film, three young women separated by decades and thousands of miles are terrorized by the same ethereal threat that nobody, not even they, can properly see. The entity manifests more like a trick of lighting than anything corporeal. In each case, when the women attempt to confront the presence, they hear the same horrific wailing.

In 1967, The Dirty Dozen fought their way into the hearts and minds of moviegoers in the classic war movie of the same name. Directed by Robert Aldrich, "The Dirty Dozen" told the (partly true) story of a dozen convicts ordered to fight for the U.S. in a secret, super-dangerous World War II mission. Among them: mobster Victor Franko (John Cassavettes), former coal miner Joseph Wladislaw (Charles Bronson), and Vernon Pinkley, played by Donald Sutherland in the role that landed him the "M*A*S*H" movie.
Character actor Lee Marvin played the general who put the ragtag team together, while Ernest Borgnine played his boss, who asked him to assemble the suicide mission that made the movie famous. All of these great actors are gone now, along with 10 of the 12 castmates who played the original "dozen." The two actors who are still with us, Stuart Cooper and Colin Maitland,...

In 2017, an unexpected bit of news arrived: Quentin Tarantino was going to make a "Star Trek" movie — an R-rated "Star Trek" movie, to boot! While Tarantino has always written his own scripts, his proposed "Star Trek" movie would change things up — Tarantino would pitch some ideas, and a different screenwriter would cobble them together into a screenplay. After consulting with a group of writers, studio Paramount tapped Mark L. Smith, who wrote "Overlord," "The Revenant," and this year's "Twisters," to tackle the script.
I got to speak with Tarantino in 2019, when he was still working on "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood." During the course of the conversation, I asked him to confirm if he was going to make a "Star Trek" movie. "It's a very big possibility," Tarantino told me. "I haven't been dealing with those guys for a while cause I've been making my movie. But we've talked...

There are tons of animation studios in Japan, but few come close to Madhouse. Madhouse has been in the animation business since 1972 and completed five decades in the anime and manga industry. The studio has produced several big names like Hunter x Hunter (2011), Yu Yu Hakusho, Death Note, One Punch Man, etc.
But in 2009, the studio was left in a sorry state after producing one of the flop anime movies of the year. The movie was called Redline, and it caused the studio to lose millions of dollars. Currently, in 2024, Redline has become one of the cult-classic anime movies even after miserably failing at the Japanese box office.

Redline was released on October 9, 2009 in Japan. But before that, it had been premiered at the Locarno International Film Festival on August 14, 2009. At that time, no one thought it was going to suffer massive losses.

The Apple TV+ series "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," like the film series that inspired it, skips around dramatically throughout history. Recall that "Kong: Skull Island," which came out after 2014's "Godzilla," was set mostly in 1973 after opening with a flashback to 1944. "Legacy of Monsters" likewise jumps back and forth a lot, exploring a present-day timeframe c. 2015 and a much earlier timeline set in the mid-1950s. To show the legacy of humans that work at Monarch -- the secret government agency assigned to oversee and wrangle kaiju -- both time frames feature the character Lee Shaw. In the 1950s, Shaw was one of the founding members of Monarch. In the '10s, he becomes re-immersed in Monarch after encountering the show's lead character, Cate (Anna Sawai).
In the 1950s, Shaw is played by Wyatt Russell, the star of "Overlord," "Everybody Wants Some!!," and "Night Swim." In the '10s segments,...

Nearly 30 years later, we now get Twister 2, cunningly entitled Twisters. But you know what? There’s more to this than a bit of wind.
When, in 1983, Anthony Perkins reprised the role of Norman Bates for a sequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s classic Psycho, there was much scoffing. On the one hand: a sequel to Psycho! Are you mad? On the other, it’d been – get this – 23 years since the first film came out. What kind of gap between a first and second film was that? Further madness.

Twenty eight years after Jan de Bont’s weather-em-up Twister threw cows at the screen and had the brilliant duo of Helen Hunt and the much-missed Bill Paxton chasing tornados, Hollywood has spat out a sequel.
Why? Well, money.
