A wider audience will get their chance to see Flora and Son when it reaches Apple TV+ on September 29th, and with that date just a month away a trailer for the film has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

This week, British actor, writer and director Noel Clarke has made headlines after being accused of groping, harassment and bullying by 20 women.
Clarke played Mickey Smith in “Doctor Who” from 2005 to 2010 and starred as Sam in the films “Kidulthood,” “Adulthood” and “Brotherhood,” which he wrote and directed, intent on bringing more representations of working-class Britain to screen. Clarke also writes, produces and plays Aaron Bishop in the British police procedural series “Bulletproof,” alongside close friend Ashley Walters.
Clarke made his film debut in 2003’s “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” and has since starred in movies including “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “Centurion,” “4.3.2.1.,” “Fast Girls,” “Storage 24,” “I Am Soldier,” “The Anomaly,” “I Kill Giants,” “Mute,” “10×10,” “The Corrupted,” “Twist” and “Sas: Red Notice.”
In 2015, Clarke founded the London-based production company Unstoppable Film and Television with Jason Maza, eventually securing investment from super-indie All3Media, which owns “Fleabag” producer Two Brothers and “1917” outfit Neal Street Productions.

While he’s acted for over two decades in films from Steven Spielberg, Ava DuVernay, Christopher Nolan, Lee Daniels, Mira Nair, and more, David Oyelowo recently embarked on his directorial debut, The Water Man. The family-friendly adventure had its premiere at TIFF last fall and now ahead of a May 7 release, the first trailer has landed. Starring Oyelowo, along with Rosario Dawson, Lonnie Chavis, Amiah Miller, Alfred Molina, and Maria Bell, the film follows a boy who goes on a search for everlasting life to help cure his mother’s illness.
“I grew up loving family films that have adventure, fantasy and jeopardy whilst never patronizing their young protagonists,” Oyelowo said. “As a father to four children I want to share films with my kids that both entertain and equip them for the highs and lows that lie ahead. I relish watching films with them that both transport our family...

It’s starting to feel as though Gunner Boone’s (Lonnie Chavis) life is fitting to become a series of upheavals with no end in sight. First, it was living with his mother (Rosario Dawson’s Mary) while his father (David Oyelowo’s Amos) was stationed in Japan with the Navy. Then it was moving to Pine Mills upon his return home to America. And now it’s adjusting to the reality that his mother is dying of cancer and his father hasn’t been able to thus far adjust to being a “dad.” We see very clearly at the start that Mary is the bridge holding these two men together—a conduit to decipher their love and remind them that the only path forward is actually declaring those feelings aloud to each other.
How can they, though, when they’re too caught up in her health? Amos grows frustrated...

For the first 20-odd minutes, “Fistful of Dirt” is a fascinating neorealist exercise, the story of a young boy set against the backdrop of Hurricane Maria’s aftermath in Puerto Rico in 2017. Then it becomes a mermaid movie, taking an ambitious leap that’s impressive even if it doesn’t always gel. As Sebastian Silva wrestles with several different kinds of movies, the child’s perspective fuses them together, and the movie becomes a startling representation of a society collapsing into chaos. Appropriately shot by “The Florida Project” cinematographer Alexis Zabe, “Fistful of Dirt” captures a modern apocalypse through innocent eyes.

Keoghan will play Yorick Brown, the main character from the graphic novels on which the show is based. He is described as a young man quick to use humor to deflect from his problems who may be the lone male survivor of a worldwide plague.

Next month, Joe Casey and Ulises Farinas unleash their kick-ass, head-banging heroes on the world in New Lieutenants of Metal #1 from the Man of Action imprint at Image Comics. Ahead of the first issue release, I caught up with Joe Casey to talk about what we can expect from the new series, teaming up with Ulises Farinas, and being in a metal state of mind. We also have preview pages from the first issue!
Q: How did you come up with the idea of New Lieutenants of Metal and what can our readers expect from the new series?
Joe Casey: Believe it or not, the idea was delivered to me by a man on a flaming pie (as these things often are). The New Lieutenants of Metal are an elite strike force of heroic headbangers that exists to mete out harsh justice whenever and wherever necessary. They're a new breed of superhero,...

Marvel’s “Black Panther,” distributed by Walt Disney Studios, topped both national home video sales charts the week ended June 2, marking its third consecutive week as the country’s top-selling DVD and Blu-ray Disc.
The sci-fi horror film “Annihilation,” a theatrical underperformer from Paramount Pictures, debuted at No. 2 on both the Npd VideoScan overall disc sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart. According to Npd data, the film, which earned just over $32 million in U.S. theaters, sold 38% as many units its first week in stores as “Black Panther” did in the superhero film’s third week of availability.
“Annihilation” stars Natalie Portman and Jennifer Jason Leigh as members of a group of military scientists who enter “The Shimmer,” a quarantined zone of mutating landscapes and creatures.
Twentieth Century Fox’s spy thriller “Red Sparrow” slipped a spot on both charts to No.

Marvel’s “Black Panther,” distributed by Walt Disney Studios, held back a pair of newcomers to handily top the home video sales charts for a second consecutive week.
The top new release on Npd VideoScan overall disc sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart the week ended May 26 was 20th Century Fox’s spy thriller “Red Sparrow,” which debuted at No. 2 selling 22% as many discs as the returning superhero actioner.
“Sparrow” stars Jennifer Lawrence as a Russian ballerina who is forced into becoming a seductive secret agent after her dancing career is cut short due to injury. It earned $46.9 million at the domestic box office.
No. 3 on both charts was Warner’s “Game Night,” a comedy about a group of friends who are caught up in a life-and-death caper that they believe is an elaborate role-playing game. It took in $68.9 million at U.

I Kill Giants is quite a name for a movie. A really good name actually because with that and the awesome artwork on its poster, I was immediately intrigued…. Based on the comic book of the same title, I Kill Giants tells the story of a troubled girl, Barbara (Madison Wolfe) who believes giants are coming to her town and she is the one to stop them. She has some help in new friend Sophia (Sydney Wade) as well as her sister Karen (Imogen Poots) and the school psychologist Mrs Molle (Zoe Saldana) who don’t initially believe what she is saying.
Those looking for a horror movie full of giant slaying might be a little disappointed to hear that this isn’t that kind of film.

MaryAnn’s quick take… A movie as thrillingly weird as its protagonist. We are totally enrapt by the wonder and the terror of her imagination, and the power of it to create joy and solace. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about girls and women

Originally published in 2009, Joe Kelly and Ken Niimura's graphic novel I Kill Giants introduced us to Barbara, an uncompromising teen girl dealing with some pretty big family issues while also saving her community from giants who randomly emerge to destroy her and everyone she loves.
Fast forward nearly a decade and now Kelly and NIimura's vision has been turned into a feature film directed by Oscar-winning Danish director Anders Walter, produced by Chris Columbus and starring Madison Wolfe, Zoe Saldana and Imogen Poots.

Oscar-winning Danish filmmaker Anders Walter was vibrating with excitement when he boarded his flight to Canada, his debut feature was about to have its first press screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. It had been almost four years since he’d won the Academy Award for Best Live-Action Short, and the 39-year-old director had dedicated every one of them to the challenge of financing and filming “I Kill Giants.”
For all of Walter’s pedigree and potential, the project had been an uphill battle from the very beginning. It didn’t seem to matter that it was based on a popular graphic novel with a built-in fanbase, or that it would star Brie Larson and Zoe Saldana. Twice the movie was ready to roll; twice it had collapsed. But this was all behind him as he sat on the tarmac at Copenhagen Airport. When he left Denmark, his career...

Nearly 10 years ago, Image Comics released the first issue of writer Joe Kelly and artist Ken Niimura's I Kill Giants. The seven-issue series about a girl battling her own demons while trying to save her small town from colossal creatures has been a source of awe-inspiring fantasy and grounded family drama for the past decade, and beginning on March 23rd, those same elements will come to life on the big screen with Rlje Films' anticipated release of the I Kill Giants movie. To celebrate the new version of their coming-of-age tale, we caught up with Kelly and Niimura to discuss their thoughts on the feature film adaptation, reflect on the comic book's long journey to the big screen, and look ahead to their exciting collaborations in the future.

While the main creative force behind I Kill Giants is unquestionably screenwriter Joe Kelly, who adapted his own limited comic series of the same name that he co-created with artist J.M. Ken Niimura, director Anders Walter’s past work including his Oscar-winning short, Helium, shows he’s hardly a stranger to the source material’s subject matter. Kelly and Niimura found success creating a work that reflects what happens when a child uses their imagination to confront a still abstract understanding of death.
It’s no surprise then that the two films I thought about while watching this adaptation were A Monster Calls and Where the Wild Things Are. I Kill Giants plays like a hybrid of sorts that’s just as cognizant of keeping things as darkly resonant. It’s okay for a family film targeting an audience that would call its lead (Madison Wolfe’s Barbara Thorson) a...
