Exclusive: Canada’s Racial Equity Screen Office (Reso) and leading Korean drama producer Sll are teaming up to launch an accelerator program to encourage co-production between Canadian and Asian producers.

The Canada-Asia Pacific Co-Production Accelerator (Capca) will take place over 12 weeks, both virtually and in person, culminating in a field week at Sll’s Seoul studios and a showcase at East by Northwest (Exnw) 2025.

Capca will select a group of 4-8 Canadian writers and producers to take part in the program, through which they’ll be equipped with the knowledge, networks and access required to break into the Asia-Pacific co-production space.

The program’s curriculum will be based on case studies of both adaptations and original IP. Faculty leads are industry co-production veterans Janice Chua and Third Culture Content’s Sean Dulake (Dramaworld).

BBC Studios India is reportedly eyeing an exit from the subcontinent, signaling a potential shake-up in the region’s content production ecosystem, according to local media reports.

Once a prominent player with hits like local adaptations of “Criminal Justice” and “The Office,” the studio had positioned itself as a bridge between British storytelling and Indian sensibilities. However, industry insiders suggest challenges in scaling operations and stiff competition from homegrown production houses and streaming giants may have prompted the move. If finalized, the exit could mark the end of a distinctive chapter in India’s evolving entertainment landscape, leaving fans and collaborators questioning the fate of ongoing and future projects.

“We regularly review our business operations to ensure they are as efficient and effective as possible and are currently undertaking a review of our production operating model in India. However no decision has been made,” a BBC Studios spokesperson told Variety.

A first look at Sally Wainwright‘s next project, Riot Women, has been unveiled by the BBC and streaming service BritBox.

The BAFTA-winning writer, known for Happy Valley, Last Tango in Halifax and Gentleman Jack, has taken on a new six-part series led by Joanna Scanlan (After Love, The Thick of It), Rosalie Craig (Moonflower Murders, Serpent Queen) Tamsin Greig (Sexy Beast, The Completely Made Up Adventures of Dick Turpin), Lorraine Ashbourne (Sherwood, Alma’s Not Normal) and Amelia Bullmore (The Buccaneers, Vienna Blood).

The newly released images show the five women pulling together as punk rockers, forming a makeshift band for a local talent contest. But in writing their first original song, the group soon discover they have a lot to say. Taj Atwal (Line of Duty), Chandeep Uppal (Holby City), and Macy-Jacob Seelochan (Shadow and Bone) feature as the band’s riotous backing singers.

Banijay Asia’s Mrinalini Jain said that successful adaptations require more than simple translation. “There is a very fine line between translating a format and transposing it, and transposing is where the magic happens,” Jain said, citing how “The Good Wife” was reimagined as “The Trial” with two daughters instead of a son and daughter to explore different emotional dynamics within an Indian family context.

What was being communicated to us was an extension of the ‘squeezed middle’ chat that dominated conversation in Edinburgh a few weeks ago. Effectively, buyers are still looking for the odd splashy tentpole, maybe a buzzy limited series here and there, but are mainly beefing up catalogs with cheaper, higher-volume, bankable and returnable fare.

BBC Studios’ Scripted Formats, Documentaries Head Abroad

BBC Studios Global Entertainment has licensed the drama “Doctor Foster” and comedy series “Ghosts” in Greece. The former, a BAFTA-winning psychological drama about a doctor whose outwardly perfect life implodes after she discovers her husband has been unfaithful, will star Marilita Lambropoulou in the lead role and Nikos Kouris as her husband. The original series was written and created by Mike Bartlett and produced by Drama Republic. It has already been successfully adapted in France, Japan, the Philippines, Slovakia, South Korea, Mena and Turkey. ANT1 TV and Silverline Media Productions will produce the Greek version.

“Ghosts,” originally produced by Monumental Television in association with Them There for BBC One, turns on a young couple that inherit a haunted mansion. Celebrated Greek screenwriter Theodore Petropoulos is penning the local adaptation, which Tanweer Productions will produce. It will air on Star Channel in autumn 2025.

The adaptations business is alive and well at MIPCOM, the international television market, running Oct. 21-24 in Cannes, with new local versions of hit procedurals Monk and Doctor Foster in the works.

Banijay Asia and Disney+ Hotstar have unveiled an Indian adaptation of Monk, NBCUniversal’s iconic comedy crime detective series, while BBC Studios Global Entertainment has revealed a new Greek adaptation of its award-winning drama Doctor Foster.

The Indian Monk marks the first Asian adaptation of the series, the original of which starred Tony Shalhoub and ran for eight seasons on USA Network, and only the second worldwide, following a Turkish version. The series will stream exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar and Hulu.

Deepak Dhar, CEO of Banijay Asia, said he was confident the adaptation will resonate with Indian audiences, pointing to Banijay Asia’s previous successful adaptations of The Good Wife and The Night Manager.

In Black Cab, “When Anne (Synnøve Karlsen) and Patrick (Luke Norris) hail a black cab after a night out their driver (Nick Frost) is chatty, jovial even, but they are in no mood to talk. With production underway in Belfast, Ireland on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, HBO has announced five new additions to the cast, along with a new director.

New cast members include Finn Bennett (True Detective: Night Country), Bertie Carvel (The Crown), Tanzyn Crawford (Tiny Beautiful Things), Daniel Ings (The Gentlemen) and Sam Spruell (Fargo). Bennett plays Aerion Targaryen, with Carvel as Baelor Targaryen, Crawford as Tanselle, Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, and Spruell as Maekar Targaryen.

House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel series that debuted on HBO and Max in 2022 and is returning soon, focuses on House Targaryen, generations before the events of the original Game of Thrones series.

They are, of course, the ancestors of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), one of the main characters on Game of Thrones, whose series-long plot was about wanting to recapture her family's throne.

While House of the Dragon focuses on that particular family, we did get occasional glimpses of other familiar houses in the first season of that show, including the Baratheons. Also, there are fleeting mentions of Houses such as Arryn and Stark.

While the members of House Stark were among the most important characters throughout Game of Thrones, none of the Starks were major characters In the first season of House of the Dragon.

However, it appears that it is about to change.

European powerhouse Mediawan has acquired Leonine, a leading production and distribution group active in German-speaking markets.

With the acquisition of Leonine, Mediawan will boast a portfolio of 85 labels, a catalogue spanning 30,000 hours of premium content and revenues exceeding €1.3 billion ($1.4 billion). Mediawan’s worth is now believed to be in the $2-billion range. The deal is an all-stock transaction; both companies have the same shareholder, the U.S. private equity fund Kkr whose stake in Mediawan will still be below 50%, according to a source close to the company.

Mediawan now has a significant footprint in all major European markets, including German-speaking territories which represent the continent’s second largest TV market. The pact positions Mediawan as one of the world’s biggest super indies with a large proportion of scripted business across prestige series and movies. Mediawan now spans 13 countries including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Scandinavia, Benelux and the U.K.

Scripted formats were placed front and center of BBC Studios’ panel at Series Mania, as the Doctor Who seller confirmed it is making up to three more versions of Ghosts and has bought Spain’s Brutal Media.

One of the hit BBC show’s creators, Simon Farnaby, recently told a podcast the show – which has achieved smash ratings on CBS in the U.S. – is being remade in Germany and Spain.

Matt Forde, who runs BBC Studios Global Entertainment, confirmed “there are two or three other versions in the works.”

“We love those shows and love the UK versions,” said Forde. “We are finding ways into these worlds in local creative communities.” Ghosts was recently renewed for a fourth CBS season, although the BBC version has ended.

Deadline revealed recently that BBC Studios’ deal with Lionsgate, which spawned the likes of Ghosts, had elapsed, but Forde was bullish about the scripted formats game.

The End We Start From showcases Comer's talent as a film lead, since she delivers a wholly gripping and thought-provoking performance. Comer is poised for a Hollywood breakthrough, with exciting upcoming projects and a growing reputation as one of the best actors of her generation.

The End We Start From is a haunting new apocalypse film that's worth watching in its own right. However, the movie also proves that lead actor Jodie Comer deserves to be a much bigger star in Hollywood at this point. Early in her career, Comer hit it big on British TV with series like My Mad Fat Diary, Doctor Foster, and Thirteen, but it was the BBC's Killing Eve, which saw her starring opposite Sandra Oh, that brought Comer international acclaim. No official announcement has yet been made by the BBC or production company Bad Wolf, but that hasn’t stopped Variety confirming, or IMDb listing, that Millie Gibson’s successor as Doctor Who companion will be Andor and Jurassic World Dominion actor Varada Sethu.

Sethu is rumoured to be filming with Ncuti Gatwa on series 15 already, and to fulfil the role of the Doctor’s new companion in all eight episodes of that series. So… who is she?

Tony Gilroy’s live-action Cassian Andor prequel series Star Wars: Andor aired in late 2021 on Disney+. Set five years before 2016 movie Rogue One, it’s about the formation of the Rebel Alliance in opposition to the fascistic Galactic Empire. In it, 32-year-old Sethu plays Cinta Kaz, a member of a rebel cell operating on the planet Aldhani who works alongside her partner Vel Sartha, a cousin of Senator Mon Mothma.

Henry Cavill won't be playing Lord Cregan Stark in House of the Dragon season 2, with Tom Taylor cast in the role. Taylor makes more sense than Cavill for Cregan Stark, due to both his younger age and being a lesser-known actor. Cavill could still play Aegon the Conqueror in an upcoming prequel. His experience as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher showcases many of the skills that would make him great for the role.

Henry Cavill's most frequent House of the Dragon fancasting definitely won't happen, but that could allow the actor to take on a role in a different Game of Thrones prequel. “Hot Flush,” the new show from BAFTA-winning “Happy Valley” creator Sally Wainwright, is one of several series greenlit by the BBC.

A six-part drama from ”Doctor Foster” producers Drama Republic, “Hot Flush” centers on the lives of five women of a certain age who come together to create a makeshift, butt-of-the-joke punk-rock band in order to enter a talent contest, but when they rehearse together they suddenly discover that they have a lot more to say than they ever imagined, and this is the way to say it.

Two Brothers Pictures’ crime drama “Strangers” Aka “White Dragon,” originally created for ITV in the U.K. and written by Mark Denton, Jonny Stockwood, Marston Bloom and Harry & Jack Williams, follows professor Jonah Mulray, whose wife dies in a car accident in Hong Kong, where she frequently visited for work. He decides to visit the city, where he stumbles upon a startling revelation about his wife, plunging him into a labyrinth of conspiracy.

“One Day” producers Drama Republic have restructured their C-suite, Variety can reveal, upping chief creative officer Jude Liknaitzky to co-ceo alongside Roanna Benn. Benn’s former co-ceo, Greg Brenman, will take on a co-founder role.

Brenman will continue to stay involved in the growth and development of the company with a focus on his own slate of projects.

Brenman, Benn and Liknaitzky founded London-based Drama Republic, which specializes in high-end drama, in 2013 after the trio left Tiger Aspect. Drama Republic is part of the Mediawan group, with the French conglomerate taking a majority stake in 2021.

Drama Republic is known for a variety of high-profile scripted projects including “My Mad Fat Diary” by Tom Bidwell, Mike Bartlett’s “Doctor Foster” and “Wanderlust” by Nick Payne. BBC Studios Renews Pact With Zdf

BBC Studios has struck another renewal agreement, unveiling a new deal with Germany’s Zdf today at its annual Showcase event. Notably in the multi-year agreement, which follows an earlier pact struck in 2019, the new deal will extend to co-development of scripted shows. This comes after Zdf entered into a co-production with AMC Networks-owned Acorn TV through a deal instructed by an initial partnership with the BBC’s commercial wing. Zdf will get first option on pre-sales and acquisitions, with BBC shows such as Kingdoms, Make Me Famous and This is Going to Hurt confirmed for ZDFneo. Zdf is also a c-producer on landmark natural history series Mammals and Asia.

‘Dead Pixels’ Remake Set At India’s Disney+ Hotstar

India’s Disney+ Hotstar has greenlit a remake of gamer comedy Dead Pixels, the British show produced by Succession creator Jesse Armstrong, Sam Bain and Phil Clarke’s Various Artists Limited. BBC Studios India and Tamada Media are behind the remake, which will be in Telugu and follows the journey of three young friends whose lives revolve around an online video game, with the ultimate goal of defeating a virtual villain. The Indian version moves from the UK to Hyderabad, depicting the main characters’ obsession with the game and how it interferes in different aspects of their daily lives. Aditya Mandala is director, Akshay Poolla is writer and the version stars Niharika Konidela, Harsha Chemudu, Sai Ronak, Akshay Lagusani and Bhavana Sagi. The British Dead Pixels has aired for two seasons on E4 and was picked up in the U.S.

U.K. streamer Itvx has released a trailer for three-part drama “You & Me.”

Harry Lawtey (“Industry”), Jessica Barden (“The End of the F***ing World”) and Sophia Brown (“The Witcher: Blood Origin”) star in writer and creator Jamie Davis’ contemporary love story.

The series is produced by Happy Prince, part of ITV Studios, and executive produced by Dominic Treadwell-Collins (“A Very English Scandal”), Alexander Lamb (“We Hunt Together”) and Russell T. Davies (“It’s A Sin,” “Doctor Who”).

Pierre-Antoine Capton, the CEO of Mediawan who recently engineered the company’s high profile acquisition of Brad Pitt’s Plan B, said both companies have already started working together on some projects.

“We are working on our first development and co-production projects between Plan B and our French companies, and these are happening organically,” said Capton on stage at the day-long conference organized by French TV and film promotion org Unifrance.

She joins Ambika Mod (“The is Going to Hurt”), Leo Woodall (“The White Lotus”) and “Poldark” star Eleanor Tomlinson in the series.

Mod and Woodall play leads Emma and Dexter, whose on/off relationship is followed over the course of a lifetime – told in annual instalments on the same day each year – after they first meet at a university graduation. Tomlinson plays Sylvie, who at one point also has a relationship with Dexter.

Richardson’s role has not been revealed.

Indonesian adaptations of hit series “Call My Agent” and “Doctor Foster” are among six series that are part of the Disney+ Hotstar push into the territory.

“Hubungi Agen Gue!” (“The Talent Agency”), the adaptation of “Call My Agent,” was the new title revealed on Wednesday at the Disney Content Showcase held at Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands convention center. Industry veteran Mira Lesmana serves as showrunner for the series that follows four agents in an Indonesian talent agency as they struggle to save their business following the death of the company’s founder.

Stars include Donny Damara, Hannah Al Rashid, Yoga Pratama and Lydia Kandou and each episode will feature A-listers guest-starring as themselves in keeping with the global format. Prima Facie, the new Suzie Miller play starring Killing Eve‘s Jodie Comer, will begin Broadway previews on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at the Golden Theatre, with an opening night set for Sunday, April 23.

As previously announced, Justin Martin will directed Comer in the U.S. premiere (and her Broadway debut) of the hit West End play, with Empire Street Productions producing.

“I cannot wait to continue the journey with Prima Facie on Broadway this coming spring,” Comer said in a statement. “Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine having the opportunity to play on Broadway with a story as unique and thought provoking as this one. I’m honored that a theatre as rich in history as the Golden Theatre will be home to it.”

Leading Middle Eastern media firm Mbc Group has struck wide-ranging content agreements with Turkish production companies Medyapim and Ay Yapim, and is remaking British drama following a deal with BBC Studios. The five-year partnerships – unveiled today at Mipcom Cannes – will see Turkish content offered exclusively on Mbc channels and streaming service Shahid through first-look and volume deal agreements, along with original Arabic-language originals produced for the Mena market. Some titles will get wider distribution via Shahid’s international reach. Sam Barnett, CEO of Mbc Group, said: “It’s no secret that Turkish content is extremely popular with Mena audiences – it’s a genre that has been rising in popularity in this region since the early noughties.” Medyapim will remake Suranne Jones drama Doctor Foster, having already rebooted in Turkey as Sadakatsiz.
