Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst lead the cast of director Derek Cianfrance’s crime drama, with Roofman set to debut in 2025.
There’ll be plenty of folks out there keeping an eye out for director Derek Cianfrance’s next film, partly because we’ve had to wait so long for it. It’s been eight years since he made 2016’s The Light Between Oceans, and although he;s since been attached to the odd project, nothing ever came to fruition.
Cianfrance is the director behind Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond The Pines, so any project he attaches himself to will be of interest to people who liked those movies. His latest film, Roofman, stars Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst and tells the true story of Jeffrey Manchester, a career criminal who made a habit of breaking into shops through their roofs (hence the film’s name). Paramount will release “Roofman,” the upcoming film from “The Place Beyond the Pines” director Derek Cianfrance, on October 3, 2025 as part of a first look deal with Miramax, which acquired the film for distribution in the U.S. and other specific territories.
Based on a true story, the film stars Channing Tatum as Jeffrey Manchester, a former Army Ranger who falls on hard times and resorts to robbing various McDonald’s locations, earning the media nickname “Roofman” for how he carves holes in the roofs of the fast food joints to pull off his heists.
After escaping from prison, he starts a new life while hiding in a toy store, falling in love with a single mother, played by Kirsten Dunst, and her two daughters. However, his criminal past and a final robbery threaten to destroy his chance at redemption.
Peter Dinklage also stars in the film, which Cianfrance co-wrote with Kirk Gunn.

Hold the Phone! Stars Are Dialing for Kamala
Hey, swing state voters, pick up the damn phone already! It could be Jessica Alba calling. Or Patton Oswalt. Or any number of other stars who’ve been diligently manning phone banks for the Kamala Harris campaign the past several weeks. While there haven’t been a whole lot of celebrities turning up in political TV ads this election cycle — there’s always been some doubt about how impactful those are, anyway — Hollywood types have been finding other, more personal ways of whispering into voters’ ears. “About five weeks ago, I started Phone Banking Fridays,” says producer Jamie Patricof (Half Nelson, The Place Behind the Pines), who is now shooting a movie — Roofman, with Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst — in the swingiest of swing states, North Carolina, and corralling some of his cast and crew (and their friends) into spending a few...

Deadline reports that Kirsten Dunst will play the person who is admired from afar (or from above) in the true-life story of Jeffrey Manchester – who spent months living undetected in a makeshift hideout inside a Toys “R” Us store, where he would sleep and plan further crimes. Fresh from starring in this year’s Civil War, Kirsten Dunst will feature in Derek Cianfrance’s in true crime drama Roofman – the director’s first film in eight years.
Kirsten Dunst has a long and storied filmography, but the actor added an undoubted flourish to it this year, leading the cast of Alex Garland’s Civil War. The A24 movie proved to be one of the most viscerally-unforgettable films of the year, reminding us (if indeed we needed reminding) of the power of Dunst’s enduring onscreen presence.
So what’s next for the actor in the wake of that memorable turn? She’ll reportedly be appearing alongside Keanu Reeves and some other big names in Ruben Östlund’sThe Entertainment System Is Down, although given that the premise of that film sees the action take place on a packed Jumbo jet, it could yet be that she’s part of a much wider ensemble.
