[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Legion” Season 2, Episode 2, “Chapter 10.”]
Ana Lily Amirpour, director of the acclaimed “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night” and the bonkers follow-up “The Bad Batch,” is not a filmmaker who falls meekly within any prescribed box. Therefore, she found her perfect television match in Noah Hawley’s imaginative adaptation of Marvel’s “Legion.”
“It has to be the right thing and the right type of collaboration for them to want my crazy ass to come in there and do what I can do,” Amirpour said in an interview with IndieWire. “I don’t think you can really call ‘Legion’ TV. I feel like it’s an experience. It’s about exploring sanity and madness and perception. Cinema is such a powerful way to do that.”

Late night moves! Fox is shuffling everything around! Dark Phoenix, Bohemian Rhapsody, New Mutants, all of it, musical movie chairs!
According to Jeff Snieder over at The Tracking Board, Fox is making some late night moves. Late Monday night they began shuffling around their upcoming releases. Including 2 X-Men films, and the Queen front man biopic.
Dark Phoenix was slated for Nov. 2, 2018, and is now pushed back to Feb. 14, 2019. Not necessarily a prime release date in the past, but thanks to films like Black Panther, and Deadpool, it isn’t the death sentence it used to be.
Meanwhile Bohemian Rhapsody, the biopic about Queen front man Freddie Mercury, staring Rami Malek (Mr. Robot), moves from Christmas Day to takeover Dark Phoenix’ original release date Nov 2, 2018.
Icing on the cake is that New Mutants once again moves dates. The Josh Boone Mutant/Horror film, which was originally supposed to hit next month,...

Timothée Chalamet photographed by Craig McDean for Interview magazine
With the fine coming of age romantic drama Call Me By Your Name now in limited release, audiences can join critics in swooning over the revelatory work of Timothée Chalamet's as the preternaturally sophisticated but hormonally confused Elio. He won the Gotham Awards "Breakthrough" award last night. Should his incredible performance earn him an Academy nomination for Best Leading Actor, he will be the third youngest man to ever receive that honor (he turns 22 the day after Christmas)...
Only Mickey Rooney and Jackie Cooper were younger in their Oscar races and both happened in Oscar's first dozen years (!) when the Academy's habits and fetishes and aversions were still being sorted out. They quickly turned against really young actors. While many women have won Best Actress in their 20s, it's only happened once for a man. The youngest...

David Lowery directed one of the best-reviewed movies of the year with “A Ghost Story.” Now, he’s doing something about as different as you can get.
CBS All Access announced at the Television Critics Association press tour on Tuesday that their latest slate of original programming will include “Strange Angel,” a new show following the life of Jack Parsons.

The series, created by “Black Swan” writer Mark Heyman, will chart the life of Parsons, who helped to pioneer rocket engineering in America. As chronicled in George Pendle’s 2006 book, Parsons was “a mysterious and brilliant man in 1940s Los Angeles, who by day helps birth the entirely unknown discipline of American rocketry, and by night is a performer of sex magick rituals and a disciple to occultist Aleister Crowley,...

It’s a strong group of limited releases for a July weekend: Kathryn Bigelow’s “Detroit,” “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power,” and the Yiddish-language “Menashe” all performed well, as did Sony Pictures Classics’ “Bigsby Bear.”
Opening
Detroit (Annapurna) – Metacritic: 86
$365,455 in 20 theaters; PTA (per theater average): $18,273
Kathryn Bigelow’s first film since “Zero Dark Thirty” is the first released by Megan Ellison’s production company through its own distributor. With reviews nearly as strong as “Zero” and “The Hurt Locker” but shifting to the home front in this recounting of the Detroit riots exactly 50 years ago, this opened in 10 markets ahead of its wide release this Friday. This is a tough subject, however well received, and Annapurna and its team has a challenge opening this outside of the festival/awards season and finding a wide swath of African-American and other upscale audiences.

The History Channel is about to add a breakthrough development to the mystery surrounding Amelia Earhart’s disappearance. The upcoming documentary “Amelia Earhart: The Lost Evidence,” which premieres on Sunday, July 9, includes photo evidence suggesting Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan survived the plane crash and became Japanese prisoners of war. The photo can be seen by heading to People.

Former FBI executive assistant director Shawn Henry is behind the documentary, which attempts to finally answer what happened to Earhart and Noonan after their plane went down in the Pacific Ocean on July 2, 1937. The photo was discovered by former U.S. Treasury Agent Les Kinney in 2012 and is revealed for the first time in the documentary.
The image shows Earhart and Noonan on a dock, with the duo’s Lockheed airplane aboard a ship.

It’s fitting that “Predicting the Future,” the latest episode in the National Geographic docuseries “Breakthrough,” probably didn’t turn out the way that anyone involved had planned it would. Not ten minutes into the episode, there’s polarizing statistician Nate Silver, in an interview from weeks, maybe even months, before the 2016 presidential election, with his take on the numbers.
“Most people, when you say 70/30, they don’t quite know that means. They don’t know what that 30 percent feels like,” Silver says.
Six months into the reality of that 30 percent probability, there’s a dark push-pull happening in this episode. As professionals from various predictive industries — actuaries, astronomers, city sanitation experts — give the audience a glimpse into their corner of the future, there’s the unspoken acknowledgment that people may not like what they find. As a result, “Predicting the Future” ends up presenting the viewers with competing visions of the future,...

Albert Einstein: physicist, Nobel laureate, romantic and … owl? Trying to get a handle on the complex person whose name is literally synonymous with genius was the biggest challenge for Nat Geo Channel’s first scripted anthology series, which even has the title “Genius.”
Einstein was best associated with his theory of relativity, which is one of the two pillars of modern physics, and his mass-energy equivalence formula, E=mc². Beyond the science and iconic shock of grey hair, though, was a man who started out very differently from how we now perceive him.

In any given year, since Kathryn Hahn debuted in 2003’s How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, she has had at least two to three films in theaters, not to mention her many notable TV roles. And 2016 was no different, with the release of the R-rated comedy Bad Moms, the Screen Actors Guild-nominated Captain Fantastic with Viggo Mortensen and Adam Sandler’s The Do-Over, as well as a recurring role on Transparent and landing a new comedy, I Love Dick. (Both series are on Amazon.)

Wes Anderson surprised fans earlier this week with his heartwarming Christmas short film for H&M, and now the CineFix team (via The Film Stage) is keeping the Anderson goodies coming with a hilarious mash-up that combines the stylings of the director with the world of Robert Eggers’ “The Witch.” Anderson’s playful tone is perhaps the farthest thing from Eggers’ palpable sense of dread, so seeing both of these indie worlds collide is absurdly hilarious.

Barry Jenkins wins best director for Moonlight; Casey Affleck, Amy Adams scoop top acting awards.
The National Board Of Review (Nbr) on Tuesday declared Amazon Studios’ Manchester By The Sea its best film of 2016 as it honoured the drama with four awards.
Even though Nbr best film winners seldom go on to claim the best picture Oscar – one must go back to 2009 and Slumdog Millionaire for the last time that happened – the accolade confirms this drama and Monday’s Gothams victor Moonlight as the early awards season heavyweights, a view that the oncoming rush of critics groups awards could very well endorse.
It is notable too that there was a complete shut-out of La La Land and Fences, while Jay Cocks and Martin Scorsese took adapted screenplay honours for Paramount’s little-seen Silence.
Besides the top accolade Manchester By The Sea also earned best actor for Casey Affleck, original screenplay for Kenneth Lonergan, and breakthrough...

We haven't seen detective Axel Foley on the big screen for more than 20 years, not since 1994's Beverly Hills Cop 3. Almost the entire time after that there have been reports that Beverly Hills Cop 4 could actually happen. And as we live and breathe, here in 2015, the project is still not dead, at least according to Brett Ratner. Pumping the National Geographic Channel series Breakthrough, where he directed one episode, Ratner appeared at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. We.ve just got to find the time between Chris Tucker, myself, and Jackie. If you.re familiar with the franchise, you are well aware that by "Jackie," Ratner means legendary martial artist Jackie Chan. And if you didn.t know that,...
