“It’s so nice to talk to The Hollywood Reporter,” Olivia Williams says, as we start our interview, “because I really had that Hollywood experience. I went from living in a damp basement flat in Camden Town to, in a matter of days, flying in a private jet to go on set of a huge Hollywood movie.”
Over the course of a single year, from 1997 to 1998, Williams (before then a jobbing British theater actress, doing commercials for Dove shower cream — “they asked me to audition in a bikini…I felt like giving up”) starred in three studio films: Kevin Costner’s The Postman, Wes Anderson’s Rushmore and M. “Monster” Season 3 has added Laurie Metcalf, Tom Hollander, and Olivia Williams to its cast, Variety has learned exclusively.
The trio join previously announced cast member Charlie Hunnam, who will star as Ed Gein in the next season of the Netflix anthology series. According to sources, Metcalf will play Gein’s mother, Augusta, while Hollander will play Alfred Hitchcock and Williams will play Alma Reville, Hitchcock’s wife.
Given that Gein served as one of the inspirations for Norman Bates and Hitchcock’s film “Psycho,” it would appear Season 3 of the hit Netflix anthology will delve into how Gein’s crimes influenced the film and the novel upon which the film was based.
Gein became infamous in the 1950s when authorities discovered that he not only had killed multiple people, but had dug up graves from a cemetery near his home and fashioned all manner of household items and clothing from human remains.

This year, “Shōgun” has extended the unbroken 2020s trend of at least one series earning multiple Best Drama Writing Emmy notices at once. Although none of the earlier cases resulted in wins, the new FX series is generally expected to fare differently, especially since, unlike most of its predecessors, it won’t have to fend off three-time winner “Succession.”
Of the 10 individuals presently nominated for this writing award, only 2021 champ Peter Morgan (“The Crown”) has competed for it before. Excluding his show and “Slow Horses,” a majority of the programs in this lineup launched in 2024.

Toby Jones, Lisa Vicari and Christiane Paul are set to join season two of Apple TV+’s Hijack, produced by and starring Idris Elbra.
Since its debut, Hijack has become one of Apple TV+’s top dramas. Details on the story for season two are being kept under wraps, but Elba will reprise his role as Sam Nelson — a corporate negotiator who in the first season used his skills to bring about a resolution to the hijacking of a flight on which he was a passenger.
Hijack, which concluded its seven-episode first season in August, drew solid viewership for Apple TV+, becoming the second series on the platform (after Ted Lasso) to earn a spot on Nielsen’s weekly top 10 streaming chart. Reviews were generally favorable as well, with The Hollywood Reporter‘s TV critic Angie Han noting that co-creators George Kay and Jim Field Smith “keep the tension at a delicious thrum.

Boniadi exited The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power show for personal reasons, not just advocacy work, but she will continue her advocacy work. Bronwyn will not be recast and may not appear in future Rings of Power seasons. When clarifying the purpose of her exit, Boniadi hinted at potential high-profile roles and upcoming projects.
Nazanin Boniadi is no longer playing Bronwyn in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2, and she is hoping to clarify why. While Boniadi is not going to be in the show going forward, she played an integral part in season 1, which served as a prequel to the Lord of the Rings movies. The earliest statements about her exit indicated that she was leaving to focus on her advocacy for women's rights and freedom in Iran. Boniadi is a refugee from Tehran and was born shortly after the Iranian Revolution.

In 2018, FX Productions sent screenwriter Justin Marks a copy of James Clavell’s historical doorstop “Shōgun.” For FX, it represented a fresh start for a beleaguered project, from which writing teams had come and gone; Marks was a rising talent, coming off two seasons of his buzzy spy drama “Counterpart” and the 2016 remake of “The Jungle Book.”
The book sat glaring up at him from his coffee table for days. “It’s like 1,200 pages,” Marks says. “It was the hardest of passes.” It wasn’t just the length; it was the subject matter, or Marks’ impression of it, from the book’s reputation and from its famed 1980 miniseries adaptation: his notion of a story about a white European arriving in a strange land. “The silhouette of a character who kind of looks like me, wearing clothes that do not belong to people who look like me,” he says, “was troublesome for me as a storyteller.

Francis Ford Coppola‘s 1974 masterpiece “The Conversation” will be remade as a TV series, with “Margin Call” and “All Is Lost” filmmaker J.C. Chandor attached to both write and direct the series, IndieWire has confirmed.
Chandor will direct via his CounterNarrative Films banner alongside Temple Hill, producer Adam Fishbach, and executive produced by Coppola’s American Zoetrope. Erin Levy, known for her work on “Mad Men” and “Mindhunter,” will be the showrunner on “The Conversation” remake.
MRC is the studio behind the series, and the company optioned the TV remake rights directly from the Coppola estate.
Despite a rumor that Aubrey Plaza was attached to star, no cast is involved at this stage, as a source close to the project tells IndieWire. Other media reports suggested it would be a limited series and that it was set up at a network, but it is being envisioned as an ongoing series,...

Major Crimes, the continuation series of The Closer, ran for an incredible six seasons, totaling over 100 episodes,
While the show didn't receive as much critical acclaim as The Closer and didn't earn any Emmys, the show was a success for TNT.
The ensemble-driven Major Crimes featured many of the same characters and performers as its predecessor, which rarely happens on television.
The show premiered after The Closer's finale, with only a few casting changes, such as Kyra Sedgwick stepping down from her leading role.
What is the cast of Major Crimes doing now? Find out below!
Bonus: Corey Reynolds as David Gabriel from The Closer

Damon Lindelof’s Star Wars Exit: ‘I Was Asked to Leave,’ but Would ‘Absolutely’ Try Again if Offered
Damon Lindelof’s exit from the Star Wars universe was not a mutual decision, the writer confirmed in a new Esquire interview. The “Lost” and “The Leftovers” co-creator boarded a new Star Wars movie in 2022 with “Ms. Marvel” director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy attached to direct. Lindelof brought on Justin Britt-Gibson to co-write the project with him. The duo exited the film in February.
“I was in more than talks to join the Star Wars universe,” Lindelof told Esquire. “I joined the Star Wars universe and was asked to leave.”
Lindelof and Britt-Gibson were replaced as writers by Steven Knight, best known in recent years as the creator of “Peaky Blinders.” Obaid-Chinoy remained as director amid the screenwriting transition. Lindelof told Variety earlier this month that his script was “a true labor of love.”

“Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight is set to write the screenplay for the untitled “Star Wars” movie that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (“Ms. Marvel”) is attached to direct, as original screenwriters Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson have departed the project, Variety has confirmed.
The movie is widely expected to be among Lucasfilm’s first “Star Wars” films since 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” More information about the movie, including a possible title, is expected to be announced at the Star Wars Celebration in London in April. (A representative for Lucasfilm did not respond to a request for comment.)
Knight is a veteran screenwriter who launched his career specializing in gritty crime dramas like 2002’s “Dirty Pretty Things” and 2007’s “Eastern Promises,” eventually branching out to lighthearted dramedies (2014’s “The Hundred-Foot Journey”), war thrillers (2016’s “Allied”), and biopics (2021’s “Spencer”). There’s a lot that’s happening in the galaxy far, far away—but all of it, for now, is happening directly on Disney+. The Kathleen Kennedy-led Lucasfilms shingle has found itself unable to make the jump to hyperspace and get a new feature before cameras.
Deadline has reported that the untitled project intended to come next in the franchise just lost its two writers, Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. The announced director, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is still on board. The outlet suggests that more details about the film were to have been announced at the Star Wars Celebration pep rally in London next month, but with the amount of flux currently going on behind the scenes, there might be less information to share.
Nevertheless, Obaid-Chinoy’s film is still poised to be the follow-up to J.J. Abrams’s “The Rise of Skywalker,” the last Star Wars property to play in movie theaters.

Time for yet another "Star Wars" shake-up! Are you even surprised at this point? Well, you shouldn't be. In life, the only sure things are death, taxes, and the very good chance that someone announced as working on a new "Star Wars" project will end up either getting fired or walking away. The latest: writers Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson have departed a top-secret new "Star Wars" movie. Above the Line brings us the news of the departure, stating that Lindelof and Britt-Gibson handed in a draft of their script back in February only to leave the project a few days later.
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who helmed two episodes of the Disney+ series "Ms. Marvel," is still attached to to the film, which is slated to start shooting next February, with a December 19, 2025 release date in mind. And what is this new "Star Wars" movie about? We don't know. It's a secret.

When Jon Favreau stepped onto the red carpet for the Season 3 premiere of “The Mandalorian” on Feb. 28, the Disney+ show’s creator and executive producer was feeling nostalgic.
“It’s been a while since we’ve been all together here like this,” Favreau told Variety, evoking the November 2019 premiere for the launch of the show — and of Disney+ itself. “It was before the first episode aired!”
At that time, “The Mandalorian” was a scrappy landspeeder in the vast “Star Wars” galaxy, nipping at the heels of “The Rise of Skywalker,” the culminating feature film from director J.J. Abrams that was expected just a month later to obliterate the box office like a cinematic Death Star. Instead, “The Mandalorian” became a global sensation thanks to the incandescent cuteness of Baby Yoda, blasting Disney+ into light-speed with 26.5 million subscribers in its first six weeks.

While most fans play through one or the other, those who have completed both Pokémon Scarlet and Violet noted some key differences in the stories, but the lack of payoff is disappointing as the series’ paired releases still do not do enough to set themselves apart. The adventure in the Paldea region is largely identical between the two games, with players noting the different academy names and key story changes towards the ending. The theme of Scarlet is the past, and Violet’s is the future, but for those expecting a narrative explanation for the divergent worlds, both games failed to meet their expectations.
Some may have revisited Pokémon Sword and Shield before Scarlet and Violet, and the newer games certainly do offer more distinction beyond simple differences in the Pokémon that are available to catch. In Pokémon Scarlet the player attends the Naranja Academy, and in Violet their school is the Uva Academy.

While the upcoming release of a new season of Jack Ryan brings another big hit to Prime Video, the streaming service also just dropped Riches, a great series that has flown under the radar. Along those same lines, Prime Video is home to major shows from the 2010s as well as some hidden gems.
The overlooked series are the ones that are either underrated by the masses or haven't been seen by enough people. They deserve more appreciation and attention from anyone who subscribes to the service, while some are ideal to binge over the course of a week or so.
Forever (2018)
It's hard for a show to get overlooked when it features talented lead actors like Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen, yet Forever is one of those series. The two stars also act as producers in this show about a predictable couple that finally shakes things up after over a decade.

Yesterday, news broke that Damon Lindelof, co-creator of hit shows like “Lost” and “The Leftovers,” was working on a new “Star Wars” feature film, to be directed by Oscar-winning documentarian and “Ms. Marvel” director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
Now TheWrap has confirmed that Justin Britt-Gibson will co-write the screenplay alongside Lindelof. In addition, other new details have emerged about what the project is and how Lindelof is developing the story.
According to a report in THR, a writers’ room was convened shortly after Star Wars Celebration, the all-“Star Wars” convention that was held in Anaheim, California, across the street from Disneyland earlier this year. The writer’s room was held for two weeks in July and included participation from Lindelof’s “Leftovers” collaborator (and “Station Eleven” creator) Patrick Somerville; “Obi-Wan Kenobi” consulting producer Rayna McClendon and Andy Greenwald, creator of the short-lived but deeply brilliant USA series “Briarpatch,” which had the...

Damon Lindelof is going to a galaxy far, far away — or, at least, he’s well on his way there.
The co-creator of “Lost” and Emmy-winning executive producer of “Watchmen” is developing a new “Star Wars” movie for Lucasfilm — and the top-secret project has already a director warming up their hyper-drive: Oscar-winner and “Ms. Marvel” helmer Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is in talks to direct. Lindelof will co-write the new movie, with his writing partner revealed to be emerging talent Justin Britt-Gibson (“Counterpart”).
Should the project get a greenlight, it would be Lindelof’s fourth foray into revitalizing a major sci-fi franchise. Along with his re-imaginative continuation of “Watchmen” for HBO in 2019 — for which he won Emmys for writing and limited series — Lindelof produced 2009’s “Star Trek” and produced and co-wrote 2013’s “Star Trek Into Darkness,” and he co-wrote the 2012 “Alien” prequel “Prometheus.”

It was reported over the weekend that Damon Lindelof was writing a new Star Wars movie which will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel), and now THR has a few more details to share.
Sources told THR that the new Star Wars movie would take place after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. They add that although it won’t be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga, it could feature some of the characters who appeared in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker. There are plenty of characters who were underused in the Sequel Trilogy, even some of the main ones, so this could prove a great opportunity to revisit them.

Exclusive: Nick Nolte (Graves) and Jacqueline Bisset (Birds of Paradise) will star alongside Oliver Masucci (Fantastic Bests: The Secrets of Dumbledore) in Shelter Me, a pandemic-set psychological drama marking the directorial debut of actor Jake Weber.
The film will be Nolte and Bisset’s third together, on the heels of Peter Yates’ 1977 treasure-hunter adventure The Deep, based on Peter Benchley’s 1976 novel of the same name, and Til Schweiger’s 2018 Alzheimer’s dramedy, Head Full of Honey.
Shelter Me is an anthology of storylines set against the international backdrop of Covid-19. Masucci portrays Jon Boylan, an A.I. research scientist who is unable to intimately connect with members of his test group (Nolte and Bisset). He subsequently develops a remote monitoring system that exposes personal struggles, weaknesses and strengths during isolation that come to a reckoning, as their layers of personality begin to peel away.
