Son of Stephen King Brings New Vampire Horror to Life in Abraham’s Boys: A Dracula Story
Image
A new vampire horror movie is on the way, and it’s based on a short story by Joe Hill, the son of Stephen King. The movie is called Abraham’s Boys: A Dracula Story, and it comes from Hill’s 2004 story “Abraham’s Boys,” which was part of his 20th Century Ghosts collection.

The movie takes a darker look at the Van Helsing family, showing what happens after the famous vampire hunter’s fight with Dracula. This isn’t your usual vampire movie. Instead of just hunting monsters, this one focuses on Van Helsing as a father, and the kind of damage that can come from the life he’s lived.

His two sons, Max and Rudy, grow up under his strict and paranoid parenting, not knowing what he’s gone through.

Netflix Has Found Its Cujo Director, And It's A Filmmaker Perfect For Stephen King
Image
In a bit of unexpected news, Darren Aronofsky is headed to the world of Stephen King. Yes, the man behind everything from "Requiem for a Dream" to "Mother!" has been tapped to direct Netflix's upcoming film version of "Cujo," King's 1981 novel that previously inspired a big screen adaptation in 1983. Now, Aronosky will be afforded the chance to put his own stamp on the material.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Aronofsky has signed on to direct the adaptation, which is being produced by Roy Lee. There is still no word on who is penning the screenplay, but the filmmaker is expected to be meeting with candidates soon. This is all pretty surprising, as Netflix's "Cujo" was only revealed to be in development very recently. It seems this one won't be languishing in development hell.

Aronofsky is coming off his hit "The Whale," which ultimately netted Brendan Fraser an Oscar. He...

Netflix is making a new Cujo adaptation
Image
Netflix is preparing to make another Stephen King adaptation! According to a new Deadline exclusive, the streamer has finalized a deal to adapt King's novel Cujo into a new feature film with Roy Lee set to produce.

Lee is a well-known horror movie producer, having produced hit movies like Barbarian, Strange Darling, Companion, The Ring, and more. He's also producing the upcoming films Weapons and Until Dawn. But most notably, Lee has produced multiple King projects such as Doctor Sleep, Salem's Lot, It, It: Chapter Two, and The Stand. And Netflix has released a few adaptations, too, between Gerald's Game, 1922, and In the Tall Grass, so Lee and Netflix working together makes a lot of sense.

First published in 1981, Cujo is King's novel about a once sweet Saint Bernard who gets bit by a bat and turns rabid. From there, the massive animal goes on a rampage, killing multiple people throughout the book.

The Stephen King Book Horror Maestro James Wan Wants To Adapt
Image
Since the publication of "Carrie" in 1974, Stephen King has knocked out over 60 novels/novellas and penned over 200 short stories. He has overcome severe substance abuse issues and survived one very gnarly car accident. He directed "Maximum Overdrive." He's hit dizzying peaks and deep, dark valleys, but, through it all, he has never lost his sense of wonder, nor his ability to enthrall readers the world over with his words.

King has been around long enough that he's seen several generations of filmmakers adapt his work. Old masters like Brian De Palma, George A. Romero, and Stanley Kubrick have passed the torch to the likes of Andy Muschietti, Mike Flanagan, and Edgar Wright (whose film adaptation of "The Running Man" is due out this November) — and it feels like subsequent generations will keep tending the flame so long as his work doesn't get banned out of existence. There is so much King out there,...

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night filmmaker Ana Lily Amirpour is writing and directing an adaptation of Joe Hill‘s darkly comedic horror comic Basketful of Heads.

Deadline reports that Bluestone Entertainment has secured the rights, enlisting Natasha Lyonne to star.

Launched in 2017 from DC’s Hill House, the seven-issue series follows June Branch, who discovers that every bad guy she decapitates leaves a talking head behind. With every kill, June adds a new voice to her twisted Greek chorus — and another eight pounds of literal baggage.

Bluestone will finance the action horror comedy, with Akiva Goldsman and Greg Lessans producing for Weed Road alongside Director of Development Shiva Nassab, who brought the project to the company and will be overseeing.

Lyonne will produce for Animal Pictures, with Dannah Shinder executive producing and Max Ferguson overseeing. Richard Saperstein, Brooke Saperstein, and Annie Saperstein will produce for Bluestone Entertainment, with Beau Turpin executive producing.

Stephen King short story Autopsy Room Four is getting a feature adaptation
Image
Stephen King‘s short story Autopsy Room Four was first published in the 1997 collection Six Stories – which, fitting for the title, did indeed contain six stories. That book was limited to just 1100 copies, but thankfully King ended up putting all six of the stories into different collections over the years. Autopsy Room Four was also included in the 1997 anthology Robert Bloch’s Psychos before making its way into the 2002 King collection Everything’s Eventual. In 2006, the story was adapted for the screen as an episode of the TNT King mini-series Nightmares and Dreamscapes… and now, Deadline reports that a feature film adaptation is in the works.

King has given the greenlight for the new adaptation, which is being produced by Jon Levin, who was previously an executive producer on Netflix’s King adaptation In the Tall Grass. The film will be written and directed by Ranjeet S. Marwa, whose credits include Ballistic,...

Stephen King Short Story ‘Autopsy Room Four’ To Get Feature Film Adaptation
Image
A new feature film inspired by the works of prolific horror author Stephen King is on the way. Deadline reports today that King’s short story Autopsy Room Four is getting adapted by British director Ranjeet S. Marwa and veteran Hollywood exec Jon Levin (In the Tall Grass).

King himself has given the greenlight on the project, which will be written and directed by Marwa.

Autopsy Room Four will “delve into the mind of a man who, after a life-threatening accident, wakes up to find himself trapped in an autopsy room. As he confronts his own mortality, the story navigates themes of fear, survival, and the unknown.”

The short story itself was initially published in King’s Six Stories in 1997 and appeared in the anthology Robert Bloch’s Psychos later that year. In 2002, it was collected in King’s collection Everything’s Eventual.

Notably, this isn’t the first time the short story was adapated.

Netflix's Well-Reviewed New Zombie Horror Movie Becomes Global Streaming Hit
Image
Netflix's new zombie horror movie has become a global streaming hit. Netflix has been producing original movies since the mid-2010s. Although they take on a variety of genres, they began making horror projects about a year in, with 2016's I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House. Their roster has significantly expanded since then to include movies such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Perfection, Apostle, and The Cloverfield Paradox, the Stephen King adaptations Gerald's Game, Mr. Harrigan's Phone, and In the Tall Grass, as well as the Fear Street trilogy and the Babysitter and Bird Box franchises.

Netflix has also dabbled in the zombie genre before, with their most successful feature-length installment in the genre most likely being Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead, which spawned the prequel Army of Thieves. On the series side, one of their most popular efforts is the South...

Once inside, they become separated and discover that the tall grass is twisting space and moving them around, making it impossible for them to either find each other or escape.

Released on Netflix, In the Tall Grass stars Laysla de Oliveira and Avery Whitted as Becky and Cal DeMuth, siblings who are on a road trip to San Diego. Unlike the original Stephen King In the Tall Grass short story,...

Every Stephen King Netflix Movie, Ranked
Image
Stephen King movies have been with us almost as long as Stephen King books — King's first novel "Carrie" became a film two years after it hit bookshelves. And while the adaptations have been coming steadily since the '70s, King movies and TV shows experienced something of a boom in the 2010s. This was primarily due to 2017's film adaptation of "It," which became a horor blockbuster, hauling in $701.8 million at the box office. Suddenly, everyone wanted to be in the Stephen King business again, and the aftermath of "It" saw a wealth of adaptations get the green light. This trend hasn't died out, either — new King adaptations continue to come our way. A long-delayed take on "Salem's Lot" is due out on Max later this year, and film adaptations of the King short stories "The Life of Chuck" and "The Monkey" are both on the horizon.

Why Cube's Director Doesn't Want An American Remake Of The Sci-Fi Cult Classic
Image
Vincenzo Natali's 1997 film "Cube" takes place entirely inside a strange, unexplained high-tech ... prison ... of some sort. It is constructed of cube-shaped cells with hatches on all four walls, the floor, and the ceiling. Each hatch leads into an identical cell, only distinguished by its colored lights and a series of cryptic numbers etched into the doorways. Random cells throughout the structure are armed with deadly booby-traps. There are no bathrooms, no food, and no water. Six strangers find each other in this prison wearing identical jumpsuits, unsure how they arrived there or why they have been imprisoned. They slowly begin to decipher the numbers to determine which rooms have traps and which ones do not. Naturally, they all slowly begin to go mentally deteriorate.

"Cube" was produced for a modest $350,000 (Canadian), but its intriguing "Twilight Zone" premise and taut direction allowed it to catch on as a cult hit.

Netflix's In the Tall Grass Movie Ending, Explained
Image
At the end of In The Tall Grass, Travis redeems himself by sacrificing his own life to save Tobin and break the time loop. Tobin is essential in breaking the loop by warning his family and showing Becky the truth about Travis. While the cycle seems broken, the possibility remains that more sinners may fall victim to the field's hunger.

The following contains major spoilers for Netflix's In the Tall Grass, now streaming.

Based on the 2012 novella by Stephen King and Joe Hill, Netflix's In the Tall Grass is an existential experience, despite the seemingly simple-minded concept depicted in the trailers. In the heart of America, a couple of families become trapped in a field opposite a church, not realizing they're in a time loop and luring one another in.

This haunted field acts as a gateway to Purgatory, with a mystical rock judging the families for their sins.

The indie reteams Wood with Come to Daddy director Timpson and saw the Lord of the Rings actor return to New Zealand for production. In Bookworm, Fisher plays a 12-year-old girl whose life is turned upside down when her long-absent American magician father (Wood) comes to look after her, and together they take an ill-advised camping trip into the rugged New Zealand wilderness to find a mythological beast that leads to increasingly absurd and treacherous adventures.

Among other new titles added to the lineup for Fantasia’s 28th edition are world bows for Alexander J. Farrell’s The Beast Within, starring Kit Harrington; Isaac Ezban’s dystopian coming-of-age tale Parvulos; and Vivieno Caldinelli’s Scared Shitless, starring Steven Ogg and Daniel Doheny.

Ushers: Gary Dauberman producing adaptation of Joe Hill story

While Warner Bros. continues to sit on his adaptation of the Stephen King novel Salem’s Lot, filmmaker Gary Dauberman has gone on to sign a first-look feature deal with Sony’s Screen Gems, where he is expected to “create projects for himself while curating a slate featuring established and up-and-coming filmmakers.” One of the projects he has set up at Screen Gems is the video game adaptation Until Dawn, which will be directed by David F. Why Aquaman Director James Wan Keeps On Casting Patrick Wilson In His Movies [Exclusive]
Image
Some pretty famous actor/director pairings have defined a sizable portion of classic cinema over the years. Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro; the Coen brothers and Frances McDormand; Guillermo del Toro and Doug Jones. It's a legendary list and one that should most certainly include James Wan and Patrick Wilson. Dating back to 2010's smash hit "Insidious," the duo have worked together on six of Wan's directorial efforts (and many more that he's produced). That sixth collaboration came in "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," which is just now making its way to theaters after several long delays.

But why is it that Wan continues to cast Wilson in his films? In fairness, this is a sequel and Wilson's Orm is a big part of the story. Even so, the two clearly want to keep working with one another. /Film's own Jacob Hall recently spoke with Wan in anticipation...

Splice: Why The Sci-Fi Horror Movie's Sequel Never Happened
Image
Director Vincenzo Natali never made a sequel to the 2009 movie Splice, despite the open ending leaving room for one. He prioritizes storytelling over intentionally setting up sequels, speaking to his artistic merits. Natali's previous experience with the film Cube and its sequels influenced his decision not to allow a sequel to be made without his involvement. He values protecting the integrity of his work and was likely uninterested in the ideas that surfaced for Splice 2. Although a Splice sequel is unlikely, Natali has continued to make sci-fi horror movies, including Haunter, In the Tall Grass, 388 Arletta Avenue, and Come True, each offering its own unique take on the genre. Come True, in particular, fills the void for fans of dark and satisfying storytelling.

The 2009 sci-fi horror movie Splice left the perfect opening for a sequel, but despite seeming somewhat interested in continuing the story, director Vincenzo Natali never brought Splice 2 to fruition.

The Lioness Program, overseen by Kaitlyn Meade (Kidman) and Donald Westfield (Kelly), enlists an aggressive Marine Raider named Cruz (De Oliveira) to operate undercover alongside Joe among the power brokers of State terrorism in the CIA’s efforts to thwart the next 9/11.

Review: With Yellowstone wrapping at the end of the current season, Taylor Sheridan’s oeuvre of series on Paramount Network and Paramount+ continues to grow. Unlike Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, and the various Yellowstone spin-offs, Sheridan’s latest series leaves the wild world of small-town politics and crime for a larger scale. Focused instead on covert operations conducted by the CIA, Taylor Sheridan’s Special Ops: Lioness...

25 Movies and TV Shows Stephen King Doesn’t Like, from ‘Succession’ to ‘Kill Bill’
Image
Stephen King is among history’s most frequently adapted writers, up there with Charles Dickens, the Brothers Grimm, and William Shakespeare for inspiring the most successful page-to-picture creations. From Rob Reiner and David Cronenberg to Mike Flanagan and Andy Muschietti, genre filmmakers have clamored to take on King’s words for decades.

There’s no shortage of material to go around, of course. Horror’s reigning titan of literary terror has written more than 60 books and 200 short stories: many of them rooted in King’s signature strangeness and the believable humanity that turned 2017’s “It” into a global sensation. King has teamed up with his son Joe Hill to produce even more cinematic fodder in recent years. The pair’s “In the Tall Grass” novella became a Netflix movie in 2019, and Hill enjoyed his own success with Scott Derrickson’s 2022 “The Black Phone” adaptation.

Almost all of King’s titles...

Every Netflix Original Stephen King Adaptation
Image
Netflix and Stephen King are respectively the biggest names in streaming and the horror genre so it isn't surprising that there are already several Stephen King Netflix adaptations streaming on the platform. This isn't to be confused with Stephen King book-based movies that are also streaming on Netflix, such as the modern sequel to It or The Mist.

In particular, these Stephen King Netflix adaptations are original productions based on the acclaimed writer's stories that are exclusive to the streaming service. Through these movies and TV shows, Netflix has made its mark in the horror genre by paying due tribute to Stephen King. Netflix and Stephen King stories have directly crossed paths to pretty good results so far.

In The Tall Grass (2019)

In 2019, Netflix released its third Stephen King movie, In the Tall Grass. Based on a 2012 novella co-written by King and his son Joe Hill, In the Tall Grass...

‘Cube’ – Vincenzo Natali Teases Trap He Designed for Japanese Remake and Reflects on Original Film [Interview]
Image
The Japanese remake of Vincenzo Natali‘s sci-fi cult classic Cube, directed by Yasuhiko Shimizu (“Pension: Love Is Pink”), is now streaming on the Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox.

The brutal sci-fi horror classic by Vincenzo Natali was so successful that it spawned Cube²: Hypercube (2002) and Cube Zero (2004). Natali stayed on as a creative advisor for the Japanese remake, with Kôji Tokuo writing the adapted screenplay.

Bloody Disgusting spoke with Natali for the remake’s release on Screambox. The filmmaker revealed how he influenced the remake, including its director Yasuhiko Shimizu, and teased the trap he designed in the reimagining. The filmmaker reflects on his own film in the process.

Natali tells us how he got involved with the remake and why it appealed to him.

“I personally knew the producers who made it happen, who are Japanese, who I like very, very much, and wanted to support,” he shares. “And then...

Patrick Wilson Wanted To Continue The Original Insidious Storyline With The Red Door
Image
The demonic daytime scares of the "Insidious" franchise are back for a fifth installment, "Insidious: The Red Door," due out in theaters on July 7, 2023. In 2011, James Wan's original film proved that a PG-13 horror movie could actually be scary, mostly thanks to the toothy grin of The Lipstick Face Demon that terrorized the Lambert family.

In "Insidious: The Red Door," the story picks up 10 years after the events of "Insidious: Chapter 2," with Josh and Renai (Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne) getting ready to send their now adult son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) to art school. Dalton is still dealing with the psychological effects of combatting supernatural forces as a child, and his paintings seem to awaken the same forces that are determined to take over his body, mind, and soul.

This time around, Wilson is stepping behind the camera for the first time as a director, and filling the...

‘King on Screen’ Panic Fest Review – A Touching But Surface Level Documentary Celebrating Stephen King Adaptations
Image
Director Daphné Baiwir examines not the literary work of prolific author Stephen King but the vast body of ongoing adaptations of King’s work, beginning with 1976’s Carrie, in the documentary King on Screen. With over 80 films and TV series and counting, adapting his work by over 50 directors, the horror author remains one of the most adapted in the world. King on Screen assembles talking heads to examine what it is about his literary work that translates to the screen so well and why his audience remains captive decades later. However, the documentary’s feature format struggles to encapsulate its subject’s overwhelming scope.

Baiwir begins her examination with an extended opening sequence that sees her traversing a fictional realm packed with King references. She drives through a forest, emulating the opening of The Shining, until she arrives at a shop named after the short story “In the Tall Grass.

Children of the Corn (2023) Review
Image
Plot: The events leading up to, and including, the massacre of the adults of a small town in Nebraska by their children, after the adults’ irresponsibility ruins the crop and the children’s future.

Review: The Children of the Corn series has had a rough go of it over the last few years. Well, I guess you could say it’s pretty much been uneasy going its entire duration, but there’s always been that sliver of hope that something would come along that would finally put it in line with its contemporaries. And, dare I say, Kurt Wimmer has finally accomplished that with his 2023 remake. I know, I know, this sounds absolutely ludicrous after so many years of neglect but Wimmer seems to understand the one thing that’s vital to any reboot: respect.

I feel like I need to establish right from the jump that I’m not...

How Guillermo Del Toro's Cabinet Of Curiosities Built That Terrifying Rat Queen
Image
Guillermo del Toro's "Cabinet of Curiosities" is full of strange, freaky, and delightful treasures. The Netflix anthology series boasts a treasure trove of horrors that range from the otherworldly and Lovecraftian to the deceptively mundane. But for fans of practical effects, one of the cabinet's residents stands tail and shoulders above the rest: the Rat Queen.

The Rat Queen makes her grand entrance in the appropriately named episode "Graveyard Rats," which is directed by Vincenzo Natali ("Splice") and stars David Hewlett as a grave robber trapped in a cycle of bad luck. Hewlett's Masson is in bad shape by the time he meets the Rat Queen, downtrodden and seemingly doomed to never get the money he needs. Also, he's plagued by rats for much of the episode's runtime. Lots and lots of rats. Needless to say, this is an episode of TV you should skip if you're afraid of the creatures.

‘Mr. Harrigan’s Phone’ and 11 other feature-length movies adapted from a Stephen King novella
Image
Stephen King’s been known to write a doorstop or two, but within the prolific author’s oeuvre are tales that amount to a fraction of “It.” What these novellas lack in page-count, though, they make up for in thrills. Some of the most successful cinematic translations of his work come from this short-fiction subset.

“The Shawshank Redemption”—a two-and-a-half-hour prison drama adapted from the 181-page novella, “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption”—is widely considered one of the greatest movies ever made. Released by Netflix earlier this month and just in time for Halloween, “Mr. Harrigan’s Phone” is the newest product of King’s fruitful relationship with the film industry.

See Stephen King films: 12 greatest movies ranked worst to best from ‘The Shining’ to ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ to ‘It’

Below are 11 scary, feature-length film adaptations of King’s novellas, plus one for the faint of heart.

Cabinet of Curiosities: Graveyard Rats Is A Celebration of Practical Horror
Guillermo del Toro at an event for Splice (2009)
This article contains spoilers for “Graveyard Rats” in Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.

The use of practical effects is one of the best ways to distill terror into its purest form. Horror is a difficult genre to perfect, and using realistic effects and physical models to engulf the viewer into a believable world will help with the whole “scare people” thing that is the objective of the genre. The makers of “Graveyard Rats” from Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities on Netflix certainly agree.

The short film, which premiered today alongside fellow short film “Lot 36,” takes the audience on a bone-chilling thrill ride through the catacombs of an underground graveyard. The protagonist of the episode, a grave robber named Masson (David Hewlett), goes with his heart instead of his head when rats start to steal the corpse that possesses the prized jewelry he needs to sell. With...
