As I sat down to watch the 2016 comedy "What Happened Last Night", I must admit that given the movie's cover and its synopsis, then I thought I would be in for something akin to the "American Pie" movies.
Yeah, except this was nothing like that at all. "What Happened Last Night" was just a mundane movie, and it was actually quite often so boring and slow paced that I found myself checking my phone instead of watching the screen.
The storyline from writer and director Candice T. Cain was just a swing and a miss. Especially since what I suppose were supposed to be funny moments throughout the course of the prolonged movie completely fell through and ended up being bland and not even getting a smirk. So for a comedy, then "What Happened Last Night" just failed.
And it didn't really help much that the characters in the movie had about as much appeal as wet cardboard. Come on, these characters in the movie were just stripped of personalities, quirks, traits and anything that would make the audience relate to them, much less take an interest or a liking to them. So again, another swing and a miss from the writer.
It was tough for the actors and actresses in my opinion, because they literally had all the cards stacked against them and they were fighting a massive uphill battle. I mean the lack of proper script and the lack of interesting characters just gave them nothing to work with. I wasn't familiar with anyone on the cast list here, which is usually something I enjoy. But given the fact that they had nothing to work with, then I can't claim to have seen anything interesting portrayed on the screen.
While I managed to suffer through the entire movie, I can't claim to have been entertained, nor impressed with what transpired on the screen as the movie trotted on monotonously.
My rating of "What Happened Last Night" lands on a generous three out of ten stars. If you enjoy these fraternity/sorority comedies, then there are far, far better movies out there.

There goes 2 hours of my life I wish I had back. Every shot was an EXTREME close-up. DP must have been Writing was awful, plot was beyond cliché. Amateur hour, stay away.
Producer is trying to fund a sequel...oh lord. Actors were OK, however many appeared much older than college students. Shallow story line with absolutely zero character development. We have no idea who these characters are and as a result, could care less about them. (Poor writing)
Filmmakers are story tellers first and foremost, project like these, and I've seen many like this lately, seem to be an exercise in boosting the Producer / Directors own sense of self worth, a 'vanity project'
The only redeeming quality of this film is that it didn't drone on much longer than it had to. I would have cut several scenes, but I'm all about brevity.

I can't wait for "What Happened Last Night" to go into the theaters. I took a train from NYC to Long Island so I could see it at the beginning of July at the Bellmore Movies. Unfortunately, the theater had issues with projection, and the movie stopped at the halfway point. The director Candice Cain was there and she handled it really well, doing giveaways and stuff. (I won a CD from the David Forman Project! I need to watch the movie again and listen for his song,) there were a bunch of stars from the movie there, and it was so cool to meet them.
Austin Davis was my favorite person to meet. He plays "Freshie" in the movie and does a really good job. He is so funny! I recognized him from me favorite show "Ballers," too. He is really tall and has an awesome smile. Freshie was the funniest character in the movie.
I definitely want to see "What Happened Last Night" again. It is being released on November 4, and I don't wanna wait that long!!! I just hope it is at the movies somewhere in NY... But I will take the train if I have to!!

Have you ever woken up next to a hot girl or guy, but have no recollection how you got there? That is the premise behind writer/director Candice T Cain's award winning film WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT (winner of best film at the 2016 Innovative Film Festival of Florida.) In the opening minutes we meet Sarah (Alix Kermes) & Danny (Clayton Snyder) waking up from what looks like a wild night of college partying. But how did Sarah & Danny get there & why can't they remember meeting? We find out that and much more over the ninety minute film.
We come to find out Sarah & Danny are both coming out of relationships with bad endings, with their friends Mindy (Diana Durango) & Joe (Cody Calafiore) intent on snapping them out of their funks. Each comes to a solution, the annual Gamma Bash on the State College campus. The dialogue provided by Ms. Cain is sharp & witty, giving life to the Brookhaven, Long Island, NY shot film. Cain along with cinematographer Jon Mercer (who won an award at the festival) create a great view of college life, plus a wonderful color scheme used in several locations. We get cameos from Amber Rose & WWE superstar David Otunga (wish he was in the film more), but the true breakout stars are Kermes & Durango. I can find only one flaw in this near perfect comedy. The male lead is outshined by the leading ladies & Calafiore, however it is a minor flaw in an otherwise fun film. I am sure this will be a great Friday night date flick.

Amazingly fun, and funny film. My fiancé and I watched it on a date night, and we couldn't stop laughing. I'm not about to write spoilers or anything like that, just watch the film, and enjoy! I promise, you'll end up watching it more than once! Smart, and funny, don't miss it!
