- TriviaThis episode was directed by Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington.
- GoofsAt the first of the "Sound of Silence" production, a person's heart monitor is shown and called 'a flatline.' They then proceed to resuscitate the person with cardioversion by shocking the heart. This sadly promotes the erroneous idea to someone viewing believing that resuscitation is possible and thus promotes a false hope in their life with a loved one or family member. However if cautiously watching and seeing even one heart response on a long flatline, then there is a likelihood that cardioversion could restore the heart to sinus activity. A more than one screen "flatline" however does denote a complete absence of the electrical conduction system with heart muscle. It only works when an abnormal rhythm such as "v-tach" or atrial fibrillation is present an can be converted to normal or 'sinus rhythm.' Without a conduction system working in the heart, shocking will always fail.
- Quotes
Dr. Meredith Grey: [opening voiceover] In group settings, men are 75% more likely to speak up than women and when a woman does speak up, it's statistically probable her male counterparts will either interrupt her or speak over her. It's not because they're rude. It's science. The female voice is scientifically proven to be more difficult for a male brain to register. What does this mean? It means in this world where men are bigger, stronger, faster, if you're not ready to fight, the silence will kill you.
I raised an eyebrow when I found out Ellen Pompeo was rude to Mr. Washington because he was doing things differently than what they have done before. Made me look at her different.
But Mr. Washington knocked this episode out of the stratosphere. From the silence instead of narration to the incredible acting.
Justin Chambers, the subtlety of his emotions at certain times. Chef's kiss.
I know Denzel is stepping away from directing now but I wish he wouldn't. This was the most gut wrenching episode.
