Broadway’s pop-injected Romeo and Juliet revival opened at New York’s Circle in the Square Theatre earlier this month but took a detour last night to unravel on the stage at The Tonight Show With Stephen Colbert. Rachel Zegler brought her leading role as Juliet to the performance of “Man of the House” with assistance from Jack Antonoff, who wrote and produced music for the production.
With Antonoff on piano and the cast of Romeo + Juliet backing her, Zegler delivered a tender performance of the aching ballad. “Do you have doubts?...

Jennifer Garner has been one of the most underappreciated artists in Hollywood, one whose works continue to rake in millions of dollars in box office earnings and break records all across the board.
But even if not all of Garner’s cinematic escapades include wielding twin sai blades and fighting a telepathic mutant in a place located at the end of time, the actress has made some remarkable contributions to film and television in recent years, including Love, Simon and The Adam Project.

In hindsight, a lot of projects from the early Aughts seem to have her present in a significant role, but none of it would have been possible without a little push from J.J. Abrams and an international espionage series known as Alias.

Though mostly known from the likes of “Outer Banks,” “Love, Simon,” and “The Hate U Give,” Drew Starkey is about to enter a whole new level of recognition with Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer.” The actor makes a star-making turn in the Venice premiere, which will likely see a heavy awards season run, alongside Daniel Craig in an adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ book of the same name.
We caught up with Starkey at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of the film on Monday, September 9. “I felt very honored to work with these people,” he tells IndieWire. “I look up to real giants of [this] creative field, and I hope I get to keep doing it.”
In Ryan Lattanzio’s review of the film, he writes that “Queer” has “some of the most explicit gay sex scenes I can remember in any mainstream movie.”

This week, ‘Love Lies Bleeding’, the newest release from distribution company, A24, hit theaters. The Kristen Stewart-led 80s-themed drama premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was met with glowing reviews, before its theatrical release this past week. ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ tells the story of a gym manager, portrayed by Stewart, who falls in love with a female bodybuilder, while avenging the abuse of her sister and the death of her mother. While the ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ is a classic tale of sex, drugs, and violence, the story itself is full of substance that makes you think, as well as a love letter to the 80s crime drama. Spain’s San Sebastian Film Festival has unveiled a 10-title lineup of its New Directors competition, the festival’s biggest sidebar, which takes in “Turn Me On,” the new feature from Michael Tyburski, helmer of Sundance hit “The Sound of Silence.”
Starring Bel Powley and Nick Robinson and sold by Film Constellation, “Turn Me On,” a sci-fi romantic comedy, joins buzz titles in the section, such as “In the Name of Blood,” a Nice-set Georgian mafia movie from Georgia’s Akaki Popkhadze, prized at Clermont Ferrand for his latest short, and “Gulizar,” the first feature from Turkish moviemaker Belkis Bayrak, about a young victim of sexual assault in the run-up to her wedding.
Also selected for New Directors are “Winter in Sokcho,” from French-Japanese director Koya Kamura, starring Roschdy Zem and Bella Kim, and “Regretfully at Dawn,” a drama set in a province near Bangkok directed by Thai helmer Sivaroj Kongsakul.

“Longlegs,” an occult-tinged horror mystery about an FBI agent on the trail of a serial killer, opened to a phenomenal $22.6 million, easily outgrossing “Fly Me to the Moon,” a $100 million dollar rom-com featuring two of Hollywood’s brightest stars.
To pull off that upset, “Longlegs” got a lift from some sensational reviews, as well as a creepy performance by Nicolas Cage. The film’s opening weekend results are a record-breaking debut for Neon, the indie distributor that did an outstanding job of generating word-of-mouth for “Longlegs” thanks to a viral marketing campaign. It was one that saw the studio create a “90s-style website” highlighting the gruesome crimes of its antagonist, as well as a phone number that people could call to hear a demented message from Cage. It’s a page right out of the playbooks of previous cult hits like “The Blair Witch Project,” where it worked so well...

Fly Me to the Moon director Greg Berlanti doesn’t think of himself as a director first and foremost. He’s a storyteller with a keen sense of how he can best serve a project, be it as a producer, writer or director. In the case of Fly Me to the Moon, the New York native had been talking about working with Scarlett Johansson for some time, and the opportunity to helm a hijinks-filled romantic comedy-drama that’s set in and around the Apollo 11 Moon landing was something he couldn’t resist.
His reasoning for signing on was also the polar opposite of why he chose to direct his previous comedy-drama, Love, Simon (2018), which chronicled the coming out story of teenager Simon Spier. (The critically acclaimed hit paved the way for Hulu’s spinoff series, Love, Victor.)

Exclusive: At the height of Peak TV, Greg Berlanti’s career took off like a rocket. His Berlanti Productions had a record-breaking 15 shows on the air simultaneously, from DC properties like The Flash, Supergirl and Arrow to Riverdale and Blindspot. Berlanti will have six shows on air this fall, which gave him time to launch Fly Me to the Moon, starring Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Woody Harrelson and Ray Romano. The rom-com pairs Johansson as a gifted but shady sales person trying to outrun her past, and Tatum as a fighter pilot-turned-NASA leader trying to help beat the Russians to the moon. She comes to Cape Canaveral at the behest of a Nixon fixer (Harrelson), hired to stage the moon landing for a telecast to run on global TV if things go awry. It’s the first film Berlanti has directed since 2018’s Love, Simon, a crowd pleasing theatrical release.

While there were a solid handful of vital LGBTQ+ moments and characters in entertainment media before 2000, the dawn of the 21st century represented a new shift in queer programming. Hollywood directors felt more inclined to depict sexual awakenings, people coming out, and even same-sex intimacy on the big and small screens.
There is a direct correlation between the number of people who identify as LGBTQ+ and the corresponding queer-friendly media moments that may have spearheaded or served as inspiration for real-life authenticity. A tear-jerking scene or a powerful line delivery possesses the power to transform the way a viewer thinks of themselves forever. These are the most iconic LGBTQ+ TV and movie moments of the 21st century, from prestige films to corny Disney Channel classics!

At first glance, Young Hearts seems to resemble Lukas Dhont’s Close — in its rural Belgian town setting and its focus on two early teenage boys navigating the tricky boundaries between friendship and romance. But closer acquaintance reveals Flemish filmmaker Anthony Schatteman’s first feature to be something more in line with Heartstopper or Love, Simon, entirely without the tragic dimensions of Dhont’s Oscar-nominated drama. Impressive newcomer Lou Goossens plays a 14-year-old boy thrown into emotional confusion by his attraction to a new neighbor in a film whose queer positivity should be a balm to LGBTQ kids wrestling with their sexuality as well as to parents struggling with acceptance.
That doesn’t mean the usual conflicts of brooding isolation, initial rejection and fear of stigmatization are absent. But one of the chief selling points of Young Hearts is its sincere depiction of coming out in a supportive environment, unfolding...

These days, queer movies come in all shapes and styles, from handsomely mounted biopics (“Milk”) to kid-friendly rom-coms. That’s a good thing; you want queer art to enjoy variety and novelty, and appeal to all audiences in the LGBTQ community. But sometimes, you want something very specific from a queer film; you want it to be sexy as hell.
When queer movies started bubbling into the mainstream in the early ’90s via movies like “Philadelphia,” they tended to be slightly sanitized, lacking much in the way of physical depictions of intimacy. That’s changed as the years have gone on. Thanks to films like “Brokeback Mountain,” there’s now a ton of modern examples of queer films that aren’t shy about their leads getting it on. But there’s a longer history of sexy queer cinema that goes back well before the ’90s, even if many of those...

Twelve years ago, Zendaya netted her feature debut in Disney Channel’s Frenemies.
The actress had been starring opposite Bella Thorne on the Disney series Shake It Up, about performers on a Chicago-based TV dance show. Zendaya was 14 when she and Thorne filmed the anthology comedy for director Daisy von Scherler Mayer, who had helmed the 1995 Parker Posey indie Party Girl and the 1998 feature Madeline. One of Frenemies‘ three connected storylines saw Zendaya and Thorne as aspiring magazine editors competing for a gig with an NYC publisher.
“Zendaya really wanted to have fun with the comedy and lean into it,” von Scherler Mayer says. “She chose to wear big glasses and be goofy, and it impressed me that she wanted to show off her comic chops and has such great timing.”
The film shot in Toronto, and the director recalls the lead actresses having slumber parties during production: “All those teenagers were true teenagers.

"We need to shoot the backup version of the Moon landing..." Sony Pictures & Apple TV have revealed the official trailer for Fly Me to the Moon, a romantic comedy from writer / filmmaker Greg Berlanti, who last directed the hit romcom Love, Simon. This is opening in theaters nationwide in July, a big mainstream comedy set during the Apollo 11 moon landing era of NASA - about creating a fake moon landing "backup". Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum star as a 1960s ad shark and a by-the-book launch director on a mission set against the high-stakes backdrop of NASA's historic moon landing. Marketing maven Kelly Jones wreaks havoc on launch director Cole Davis's already difficult task. When the White House deems the mission too important to fail, Jones is directed to stage a fake moon landing as alternative incase they need it. In addition to Johansson & Tatum, this also stars Nick Dillenburg,...

‘Fly Me to the Moon’ trailer lets Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum play among the stars [Watch]
“Fly Me to the Moon,” a Space Race-set romantic comedy starring two-time Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, is about to blast off. On Monday, Apple TV+ released a trailer for the film, which lands on screens this summer via a distribution deal with Sony Pictures.
“Fly Me to the Moon” tells a fictitious story set in the late ‘60s during the lead-up to the Moon Landing. Johansson, who also serves as a producer, stars as Kelly Jones, a marketing mastermind hired by NASA to improve the space program’s image. She has professional and romantic tension with Cole Davis (Tatum), a by-the-book launch commander. Things get really wild when Jones is ordered to film a fake moon landing, just in case the real one doesn’t work. And yes, there is a Stanley Kubrick joke.

All things space-related seem to be on the mind lately thanks to this month's solar eclipse carving a wide path through the United States, so Apple TV+ is taking advantage of the universe's spectacular sense of timing by pushing out its marketing campaign for its next buzzy-sounding original movie. "Fly Me to the Moon" certainly seems like an out-of-this-world experience (sorry), but it also evokes the luscious and downright romantic emotions of the classic Frank Sinatra song of the same name, too. Turns out, that was no accident.
But even Ol' Blue Eyes has nothing on the premise of "Fly Me to the Moon," which involves achieving impossible feats like making NASA sound cool to the general public, movie stars like Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson finding love amid the unrelenting pressure of the 1960s space race, and -- oh yeah -- landing humans on our orbiting lunar neighbor. Sony and Apple have released the first trailer for “Fly Me to the Moon,” a romantic comedy starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, which is set to premiere on July 12. The film is set against the 1960s space race and features Johansson as a marketing exec hired by NASA to film a fake moon landing in case the real mission fails. Apple won the project in a $100 million deal following a bidding war in 2022, and the project was formerly known as “Project Artemis.”
Chris Evans was first set to play Tatum’s role, while Oscar nominee Johansson — who also produces — has been attached to the film since its inception. Jason Bateman was originally set as the film’s director but left the project due to creative differences. His exit altered the shooting schedule and meant Evans could not complete the project and Netflix’s “Pain Hustlers” at the same time.

Apple Original Films’ romantic-comedy feature from director Greg Berlanti hits theaters July 14, with Sony handling distribution. Jim Rash, Ray Romano and Woody Harrelson round out the cast for the film that takes place against the backdrop of the Apollo 11 moon launch in 1968.
Berlanti helmed the movie from a script by Rose Gilroy, with Bill Kirstein and Keenan Flynn credited for the story. Producers are Johansson, Jonathan Lia, Keenan Flynn and Sarah Schechter, while Robert J. Dohrmann serves as executive producer.
The Hollywood Reporter reported in 2022 that the film — previously entitled Project Artemis and boasting a $100 million-plus budget — landed Berlanti as director after Jason Bateman left due to creative differences. Romantic comedies are alive and well, it seems, and we have a couple of emerging, A-list movie stars to thank for it. "Anyone But You" has officially crossed the $200 million mark at the box office in one of the most unlikely turnarounds for a movie in years, financially speaking. But the star power of Glen Powell ("Top Gun: Maverick") and Sydney Sweeney ("Euphoria") got the attention of the moviegoing masses and they turned this lower-mid-budget rom-com into the biggest hit the genre has seen in nearly a decade.
The Sony Pictures release has amassed $87 million domestically to go with a stellar $113 million internationally, per Variety. That puts it past the total of other recent hits in the genre, including "Ticket to Paradise" ($168 million), which starred both Julia Roberts and George Clooney, as well as "The Lost City" ($192 million), which was led by Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. There was a movie you may have heard of called "Damsel" that came out in 2018. Directed by the Zellner brothers (where did they go?), the film was a chopped-and-screwed riff on the Western, what was called by some a neo-Western, that followed its titular damsel, played by Mia Wasikowska, and her would-be white knight, a blubbering fool played by Robert Pattinson, across the American Southwest. The title was a knowing wink to the subversion of its story -- the damsel in question was in fact much more capable than her rescuer, their shared adversary, and basically everyone else they encountered.
The new trailer for Millie Bobby Brown's latest venture with Netflix, also called "Damsel," seems to be doing the same thing. It's 2023! Women don't need to wait for white knights to save them. Like Brown in the first trailer for "Damsel," released today as part of Netflix's Geeked Week,...

For most of Hollywood’s history, the romantic comedy genre has been dominated by straight, heteronormative storytelling that caters to the most simplistic common denominator in society. Rom-coms are often popcorn flicks that create a fantasy between a man and a woman that isn’t hard to understand, yet they rarely make people think about deeper themes or diverse representations.
Enter the LGBTQ+ rom-com. As progressive thinking has become more accepted, filmmakers, studios, and distributors have gotten more comfortable with giving queer people a vision for their own lives with stories that look a little more like their own.
