Stars: Johannes Kuhnke, Charlotte Salt, James McArdle, Elliott Levey | Written and Directed by Ben Parker
When submarine pilot Mats (Johannes Kuhnke) is approached by a low-rent Donald Pleasence to take a three-man Special Ops team deep into contested waters near the 38th Parallel, he’s understandably sceptical. Leading the mysterious trio is “Red” Edwards (Charlotte Salt), who’s joined by the belligerent Parks (James McArdle) and the gentle Denholm (Elliott Levey).
While submerged, the top ship is boarded, and suddenly the four explorers are trapped together in the underwater chamber. To add vinegar to the wound, catastrophe strikes and they start taking on water. Tensions fray. Clichéd dialogue is exchanged. Who, if anyone, will emerge alive?
The Chamber is the feature debut for writer-director Ben Parker, and it’s a pretty standard micro-budget setup: a high-concept thriller almost entirely confined to a single set. Sadly, it’s a bit of...

MaryAnn’s quick take… A wonder of low-budget suspense, this is a horror movie with no monsters, only people in an impossible situation. Intense, claustrophobic, totally gripping. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
An American military team commandeers a rickety old submersible from a Swedish research vessel in South Korean waters for a secret mission. Submersible pilot Mats (Johannes Kuhnke) is unhappy that he has too little time to prep his “scrappy and fragile” sub to carry their mysterious payload and more people than it really should, but he has no choice, and off they go to the ocean floor: himself, black-ops leader Red (Charlotte Salt: Beowulf), tech nerd Denholm (Elliot Levey: Denial), and hothead (there’s always a hothead) Parks (James McArdle: Star Wars: The Force Awakens). With all of Mat’s safety procedures...

Though the set-up for writer/director Ben Parker's feature film debut The Chamber feels overly convoluted, the central conceit of the movie - a group of people stuck in a slowly sinking submarine - has a whole lot going for it.
The convoluted plot has a three-person special ops team trapped in a submarine beneath the Yellow Sea. They're down there on a mission against North Korea which has flexed the power of its nuclear arsenal.
Shortly after being submerged, their ship is boarded and the submarine attacked. Now the trio is stuck inside a sinking ship with nowhere to go.
The whole North Korea storyline had me rolling my eyes but the concept of the team being unable to escape the submarine really caught my attention and the trailer suggests that the clau [Continued ...]...

"If you do this, we're dead. We're all dead!" The first official trailer has debuted for an indie survival thriller titled The Chamber, which first premiered at the Horror Channel FrightFest last year. The film is about a Special Ops team that takes a small submersible craft (read: submarine) beneath the Yellow Sea off the coast of North Korea. Some things go wrong, and they end up trapped underwater in a tiny "chamber" - hence the title. The cast includes Charlotte Salt, Johannes Kuhnke, Christian Hillborg and Elliot Levey. I'm not sure what to make of this. The footage is a bit confusing - I can't tell if it's some weird creature or alien under the water, or something the North Koreans put down there, or their own screw up that trapped them. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Ben Parker's The Chamber, direct from YouTube: A claustrophobic...

Single-location thrillers are never straightforward. Throw in some underwater filming and the odd spot of international relations and newcomer Ben Parker certainly didn’t make his first time behind the camera particularly easy for himself. Luckily for us though, the fresh-faced Brit pulls it off almost completely without a hitch, largely down to his impressively […]
