The Breach, not to be confused with Breach, is the second feature from Rue Morgue founding editor Rodrigo Gudiño (The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh). Co-written by Nick Cutter and Ian Weir based on Cutter’s novel, its mix of haunted house and mad scientist themes attracted a lot of pre-release buzz which I was hoping it would live up to.
John Hawkins has one week left as sheriff of Lone Crow. Then he can put the town, and his ex Meg, behind him and start a new job in the city. That, of course, means something terrible has to happen before he can leave. And it does when a canoe bearing the mutilated remains of theoretical physicist Cole Parsons washes up at a local park.

The Child Remains tells the story of an expectant couple’s intimate weekend… A weekend which turns to terror when they discover their secluded country inn is a haunted maternity home where unwanted infants and mothers were murdered. Apparently inspired by the true story of the infamous ‘Butterbox Babies’, a creepy folklore tale from Nova Scotia that – like many of these macabre stories – has some basis in fact, after all pretty much ever country has scandalous rumours about mistreatment in all kinds of care homes, not just maternity homes.
The Child Remains follows very much a traditional horror cliche – that of the small town inn that hides a secret – only unlike others of this ilk, writer/director Michael Melski plays with the expectations of the audience and also successfully combines a mishmash of genres, tapping...

The second of two films shown back-to-back at Starburst Film Festival that dealt with the loss of a child and the breakdown in a relationship. This particular film comes from what I personally consider the home of good horror, Canada, and benefits from – thankfully – a much clearer vision than Torment.

The Horror-on- Sea Festival is Southend’s annual horror event, which showcases the talents of Independent filmmakers, through shorts and features over two weekends. This is the 6th year it has been running and this is my review of the festivals second weekend
Day 1: Friday 26th January – Double Feature 19:00pm
Feature – Mortuary Massacre
When Detective Giger (Todd Brown) attends a mortuary regarding several mysterious deaths which occurred on Halloween night, the local Mortician (Carl Crew) describes the backstory of three of the victims. Christopher James Miller delivers an experimental horror film which has some surreal visual shots to get into the psyche of the characters. Utilising his experience in special effects, this is one for the gore hounds, with plenty of visual gore, which is delivered with plenty of tongue and cheek humour.
Short – Unto Death
In this powerful and moving gothic drama in which a priest begins...

The Child Remains is new supernatural thriller from writer and director Michael Melski which has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Saturday 27th January. I got chance to ask Michael a few questions about the influences for the film, why he chose not to incorporate jump scares and his favourite scene in the film.
What can we expect from The Child Remains?
More character and story than you typically see in a genre offering. But I’ve heard its very scary as well. We’ve won seven Best Feature prizes at festivals around the world, plus 4 Best Actress wins for Suzanne Clement, so it seems to be striking a chord. Very excited to be at Horror-On-Sea, we’ve hoped to be at this festival since we were in post-production.
