Featured review
After a series of strange deaths, a lone survivor of a rampage by a genetically-engineered human/shark hybrid teams up with a hunter to bring the creature to justice and return it to the scientists who created it, but it proves far more difficult than they expected when it returns to challenge them.
This was a pretty decent shot-on-video throwback. Among the better features to like here is the highly effective atmosphere created by the intentionally bad presentation of the film. It's so cheaply made the costume is stapled together in numerous locations on the body, the absolutely atrocious prosthetics and make-up work done on the graphic kills, the production quality, and the stuttering presentation of people having trouble with the language all shine quite obviously in the low-budget. Given the overt silliness of the storyline involving how the creature was created and how this plays out, that develops an impressive low-budget charm that captures the spirit and energy of the old-school formula that's on display from the very beginning which would infuriate those who don't appreciate the style but appeal to those who do. That said, this one still manages quite a lot to like here. The biggest aspect of this one is the highly enjoyable shark attacks that manage to utilize a slasher-style setup with the cheesiness of a two-legged humanoid shark walking around. The beach attack on the scientists and the camping friends getting slaughtered gives this a great tart, while the big slaughter of the hikers lets loose with the outright cheesiness of the setup providing a lot to enjoy. That becomes all the more obvious once the finale arrives where the absurdity of what's happening and the outlandish stalking scenes provide the kind of goofy cheese that the film needs at this particular moment. Adding a solid cheesy car chase and a few genuinely funny touches all combine together for a likable and generally fun effort.
Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence and Graphic Language.
