Jennifer Lopez and Shakira dominated the stage at the Super Bowl Liv halftime show on Sunday night. Together the divas brought over 60,000 football fans to their feet at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, with an electrifying medley of songs old and new.
Shakira kicked off the show with a parade of English-language hits such as “She Wolf” and “Empire,” plus a reggaeton remix of “Whenever, Wherever.” Recent Grammy nominee Bad Bunny emerged for an abridged version of his bilingual hit, “I Like It,” followed by a salsa version of Shakira’s Spanish-language smash “Chantaje,...

Uber-producer Ryan Murphy has made small screen stars out of A-listers and fresh faces alike.
Angela Bassett (pictured above)
Bassett starred in four seasons of “American Horror Story”, earning two Emmy nominations. She helmed two episodes as a director, the first during her final season as an actor, on “Roanoke,” before Murphy invited her back behind-the-scenes for a pivotal episode in the seventh season, “Cult.” She also signed on to star in and serve as executive producer on Murphy’s first-responder drama “9-1-1” for Fox, which is now in its second season.
Kathy Bates
Bates joined the Ryan Murphy family in 2013, with the third season of “American Horror Story,” subtitled “Coven,” and continued on through the sixth season, “Roanoke.” The Oscar winner scored three nominations and one win to date with her work on Murphy’s anthology before moving over to “Feud,” in which she played actress Joan Blondell.

Darren Criss is about to be christened an Emmy winner. According to our combined odds, the “Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” star is the 4/11 favorite to take home Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor at Monday’s ceremony.
This would be Criss’ first Emmy win in two nominations, having contended for Best Music and Lyrics for writing “This Time” from “Glee” three years ago. At 31, he’d be the second youngest winner in the category, behind Anthony Murphy, who was 17 when he triumphed for “Tom Brown’s Schooldays” in 1973. This category usually favors older actors — no one has won in their 20s and only 11 people have won in their 30s, including 34-year-old Riz Ahmed (“The Night Of”) last year — but the majority of our Experts, Editors and Top 24 Users believe Criss has enough oomph to overcome that bias with his chilling turn as serial killer Andrew Cunanan. A friend of Andrew Cunanan, whom Emmy nominee Darren Criss portrays in FX’s “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” described the late serial killer as the kind of kid who’d put dimes in penny loafers. “I was this kid,” says Criss, who doesn’t assert his status through clothing as Cunanan did, but prefers to keep his wardrobe “slightly left of center.” “I understand what it’s like to try and be a little different.”

Criss received his first Emmy nom for original song “This Time,” written for the “Glee” finale. Criss’ longtime stylist Ashley Weston collaborated with Brooks Bros. on this custom black and navy tux. “We kept it classic,” notes Criss, who’d just finished starring in Broadway’s “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” “Being in a suit with longer hair certainly was different from Hedwig, different from [‘Glee’ character] Blaine, so it reminds...

Darren Criss (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace”), Aidy Bryant (“Saturday Night Live”) and Kenan Thompson (“SNL”) earned their first Emmy nominations for acting this year, but these aren’t their first nominations overall. All three of them recently contended for songwriting. And they’re far from the only ones who have crossed the threshold between music and other fields at the Emmys. Far from it.
Criss rose to fame as an actor on “Glee” before earning his first acting nomination, Best Movie/Mini Actor for playing killer Andrew Cunanan in the limited series “The Assassination of Gianni Versace.” But “Glee” is what brought him his very first Emmy recognition. He earned a nom for Best Music and Lyrics in 2015 for writing the song “This Time” from the series finale episode “Dreams Come True.” But he lost that prize to Kyle Dunnigan and Jim Roach, who wrote “Girl You Don’t...

Darren Criss (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”) and Jesse Plemons (“USS Callister: Black Mirror”) could break the curve in the big way at the Emmys. Both are nominated for Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor and if either wins, he’d be the second youngest champ in the category.
At 31 and 30, respectively, Criss and Plemons are competing in a category that has long favored middle-aged and older stars. The category’s youngest winner is Anthony Murphy, who was 17 when he prevailed for “Tom Brown’s Schooldays” in 1973, which was also his first and only acting role. That record looks to stand for a long time, considering that no one in their 20s has ever won.

Antonio Banderas (“Genius: Picasso”): Banderas plays famed Spanish surrealist painter Pablo Picasso in this second season of the NatGeo anthology series. He previously competed in this category at the Emmys for “And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself” (2003). That role also brought him a Golden Globe bid to go along with the two he received for Best Film Comedy/Musical Actor (“Evita” in 1996 and “The Mask of Zorro” in 1998). By now most folks are familiar with James Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke” shtick, in which he and a celebrity belt out tunes while cruising through L.A. traffic. Last night it was Adam Levine — the voice of Maroon5 and the face of The Voice — but this week’s model was a little different.
He and CBS’ Late Late Show host tooled around and let out semi-inspired versions of Levine’s hits including “Moves Like Jagger” and “This Time.” No news there. The discussion turned to the singer’s tattoos: “I’m pretty much covered,” Levine said, gesturing from his shoulder to knee. Not to be outdone, Corden rolled up a sleeve and displayed his “ink”: Levine’s mug over a scroll with his former group’s name. “Kara’s Flowers are the band Maroon5 could have been,” he said of the precursor L.A. group that made a couple...

Darren Criss doesn’t want to humblebrag, but he had a very memorable encounter at the Met Gala earlier this month. He was approached by someone who had just seen his performance as serial killer Andrew Cunanan on “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” — and who had no idea of his song-and-dance history as Blaine Anderson on “Glee.”
“He was like, ‘Oh, man, everyone’s gonna think you’re this killer now.’ He didn’t know what I had done before and he didn’t know anything about ‘Glee,’ and I was really thrilled,” Criss tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview (watch above). “I was like, ‘This is great.’ If I can keep that up, to me, that would be a huge accomplishment because the goal is to continually keep people on their [toes].”

On its release 25 years ago, on May 18, 1993, there was nothing lower-case about Janet Jackson’s album “janet.” except its title.
Jackson’s previous two albums for A&M Records, “Control” (1986) and “Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814” (1989), had reached No. 1 on the national charts and been certified for sales of 11 million total units. No longer a modestly successful R&B singer, she was a major crossover talent whose commercial profile had begun to rival that of her older brother Michael.
An intense bidding war for Jackson’s services ensued in 1991, with Virgin Records prevailing with a then-unprecedented and headline-making bid that the label’s founder Richard Branson later identified as $25 million.
Branson, who had to scramble to assemble the financing for the deal, wrote in 2016, “Signing Janet would confirm Virgin Records’ position as the world’s sexiest record company. I was damned if I was going to let the caution of our bankers stop us.

Riz Ahmed made history in 2017 by becoming the first man of Asian descent to win a Primetime Emmy for acting. The British-Pakistani performer won Best Movie/Mini Actor for his role in the crime drama “The Night Of.” That also made him the first Asian actor, male or female, to win for a leading role. This year Asian actors may break through again in leading categories as Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”) enters the conversation for Best Drama Actress and Darren Criss (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace“) jockeys for position in the same category Ahmed just won.
The only other Asian actor to win an Emmy besides Ahmed was Archie Panjabi, who is of Indian descent. She won Best Drama Supporting Actress for “The Good Wife” in 2010. However, one may also count Iranian actress Shohreh Aghdashloo, Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actress winner in 2009 for “The House of Saddam.” Middle Eastern countries...

Filming is officially underway on a new BBC Alan Partridge TV series called This Time. Steve Coogan’s iconic character was first conceived for On The Hour in 1991 and went on to make an even bigger impression in the Abba-obsessed spoof chat show, Knowing Me, Knowing You. However, it was the sitcom I’m Alan Partridge that propelled Norwich’s King of Chat to household name status, particularly in his native U.K.

As usual, several of Hollywood’s top composers offer multiple contenders for Best Original Score, among them usual suspects Hans Zimmer and Michael Giacchino. Zimmer’s experimental score for action spectacular “Dunkirk” was inspired by Christopher Nolan’s pocket watch, and an improvised piano riff was the spine for Denis Villeneuve’s dystopian epic “Blade Runner 2049.”
That score was composed in collaboration with his credited protege Benjamin Wallfisch, who also worked on “Dunkirk” along with Lorne Balfe, but only two could be submitted to the Academy, so Zimmer filed alone. Wallfisch also composed “It.”

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. No, not because it’s the holidays -- because The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills are back, and Et has the debut of the cast’s much-anticipated season eight taglines.
First up is Kyle Richards, who seems to update the same tagline year after year. This time, she’s gone with this variation: “In this town, fame and money come and go, but friends should not.”
Then, Erika Girardi/Jayne comes in hot with, “Some people call me cold, but that’s not ice. It’s diamonds.”
Dorit Kemsley goes cheeky with her line, “I believe in an excess of everything… except moderation.”
Newcomer Teddi Mellencamp Arroyave’s line sets the stage for what to expect from her on the show: “Having the best isn’t important to me, but being my best is.”
Next up is Lisa Rinna, who puts a spin on her much-used catchphrase: “I don’t have...

In the past, Lego sets promoted in advance of various superhero movie releases have done a fine job of spoiling major details. Chief among them, of course, was The Amazing Spider-Man‘s Lizard-laden third act that saw that flick’s primary antagonist turn a Swat team into reptile-human hybrids.
Well, as it turns out, that proud tradition is seemingly continuing with the highly anticipated Avengers: Infinity War. This time, though, we’re thankfully not seeing any plot points laid bare, but a new costume to possibly be worn by the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s ultimate evil may have just been unveiled thanks to some collectibles.
By now, you’ve probably seen countless memes lampooning Thanos for not wearing his familiar headgear. In fact, fans have been joking about him looking like everyone from Pawn Stars host Rick Harrison to Homer Simpson. Needless to say, we hope that he finds the right haberdasher soon enough.

Movie fans have yet another reason to be giddy near the end of the year ( besides the big serious Oscar films and those great special DVD sets that Santa brings). For the last two years around this time we’ve been transported to that “galaxy far, far away”. When the Disney company bought Lucasfilm they made a promise to continue the saga And delve into the mythos with “stand -alone” spin-off films. The “mouse house” has more than kept their promise. 2015 saw the much-anticipated release of “Episode VII” in the saga, introducing a new set of heroes and villains along with returning characters from the original first trilogy. Last year, while another episode was in production, we got the first live-action spin-off, a prequel of sorts to the first film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Both films were box office smashes with VII becoming the biggest B.O.

Even though we were promised no major crossover miniseries for at least 18 months after the conclusion of Secret Empire, that doesn’t mean there won’t be other storylines that’ll shake the Marvel Universe to its core. In fact, the House of Ideas fully intends on starting 2018 with a bang, thanks in no small part to Avengers: No Surrender.
Now, if this seems confusing to you at all, know that the difference between No Surrender and something like, say, Civil War II or Secret Wars is that this particular arc won’t be told throughout the course of a limited series. Stephen King’s Pet Sematary has been chosen for another new adaptation as the author’s popularity in the eyes of moviegoers continues to skyrocket. This time, the story will be brought to life by Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch, the minds behind Starry Eyes, and according to Deadline, Paramount has the film locked in for an April 19, 2019 release.
For those unfamiliar with Pet Sematary, the story follows the Creed family as they move to a small town in the Northeast which borders a cemetery enabling the buried to return. Head of the family, Louis Creed thinks it’s far better to bring his loved ones back from the dead as murderous simulacra than let them rest in peace – but don’t worry, there’s plenty of interfering supporting characters to impart wisdom.

Although pretty much everybody and their mother is frothing at the mouth waiting to see Avengers: Infinity War – and rightfully so – it’s important we not forget that Marvel Studios have one more stop on the road before arriving at the next big team-up flick. We are, of course, talking about Black Panther.
Admittedly, it’s quite easy to get swept up in the hype surrounding Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ next grand adventure, but I have good reason to look forward to the King of Wakanda’s solo cinematic debut more than most other Marvel films to be released over the course of the next two years.

A new trailer for Nashville’s final season is here, and the fireworks are just getting started.
Cmt’s country music drama returns in the new year with its main characters at a crossroads. As the dramatic two-minute trailer teases, changes are afoot -- and it may tear some relationships apart for good.
Following the fan backlash for stealing Maddie’s song, Juliette (Hayden Panettiere) struggles with depression and turns to a new face, Darius (Josh Stamberg), the charismatic founder of a self-actualization movement, to help free herself from her inner demons. When Darius tells Juliette he's here to "change your life," something strikes a cord with her: "I'm ready," she says with a hint of desperation.
Meanwhile, Deacon (Charles Esten) may be moving on to a new romance with Jessie (Kaitlin Doubleday) following the death of his wife, Rayna, and not everyone in his family -- namely daughter Daphne (Maisy Stella) -- is taking the burgeoning...

Hey,"Bold And The Beautiful" fans. We've got some new storyline teaser scoops from CBS for tomorrow's Wednesday, December 6,2017 episode. The drama did heat up between Ridge and Thorne in today's December 5,2017 episode as expected. And that was an interesting moment where Quinn flashed back to being alone with Ridge. We'll certainly be looking to see if something results from that in the coming weeks. We also liked how Ridge tried to take back the compliment he gave to Thorne's designs after learning that Thorne designed them. We were like, 'Nope, it's too late. You can't take it back now. You loved them.'" Ridge and Thorne also got real intense there towards the end. Thorne definitely wants a little "Respect." In tomorrow's December 6,2017 episode, it sounds like the storyline will shift back to the Steffy and Liam drama at least for a little while. Crazy Sheila will...

Every year, the studios take their best genre successes and try to push them beyond the technical ghetto. Oscar campaigners want to convince critics, guilds, and Oscar voters that their movie rises to the level of art. But it’s rare for fantasy, horror, thriller, action or comic-book movies to pass over to the Best Picture side.
When they do, it tends to be an exception like Peter Jackson’s fantasy trilogy “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. All three films scored Best Picture nominations and technical wins: “Fellowship” scored 13 nominations and wins for Makeup, Visual Effects, and Cinematography; “The Two Towers” earned six and won Sound Editing and VFX; and then came the ultimate triumph for the finale “The Return of the King”: a grand sweep of all 11 nominations including Best Picture. But while “Lotr” fell into the fantasy genre, it was boosted by the literary pedigree of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Track my film passions of the past year and the result is this list. These are the films that wowed and moved me, that turned me into a rabid champion, that gave me hope that brilliant cinematic storytelling — and a rebel spirit — is alive and well. It turned out to be a strong year for women directors (five), romances (three), World War II dramas (two), Angelina Jolie movies (two), animation (one), and documentaries (one).

Anyone who fancies themselves as a Green Lantern fan has probably noticed that each representative of Sector 2814 has been given ample time to shine in a solo series. Whether it be Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner or Kyle Rayner, each of those ringslingers have had an era that they could definitively call their own, and each also made vast contributions to the ongoing mythology.
But when DC relaunched the flagship space cop title in 2016, they pluralized it with Green Lanterns, effectively placing the focus squarely on rookies Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz. Now, this could’ve been a disaster if placed in the hands of lesser writers, but Sam Humphries gave those two such personality and charted exciting new territory from the get-go.

It would be fair to say that the top five movies at the Us box office in 1990 didn’t follow the rule book. In fact, 1990 saw Hollywood’s blockbuster formula falter, to the point that conversations were rife about whether a sea change was coming. Dramtic changes in blockbuster mentality were certainly on the way, as it happened, but not for a decade or so. Yet the seed was planted in 1990 that sure-fire blockbuster hits weren’t always, well, sure-fire blockbuster hits.
