The internet is full of profile documentaries; Vimeo in particular is an endless vein of them – quirky characters that people with a camera know and then try to capture in a stylish 8-10 minute film. Mile 19 is basically one of those, but where I come in with cynicism, it is good enough to win me over and make me a fan. The story of Johnnie Jameson is one of a legacy runner in the LA marathon, but it is also of a man fighting his demons and making sure he keeps going in his life. His positive attitude and warmth come through very well, and it is enough to win over the viewer.
Part of this seems to be a genuine connection between the filmmaker and the subject, but part of it is frankly the film letting Jameson hold court, and then editing it together into a neat package which is slick and engaging. It doesn't break a mold in anyway, and it doesn't do much different from endless other profile docs, but it is warming and enjoyable throughout.
