Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain performed their own singing as George Jones and Tammy Wynette.
Originally, the project was conceived as a movie starring Jessica Chastain and Josh Brolin, with Tate Taylor directing. While in development, the project was transformed into a limited series, Brolin and Taylor dropped out, with Michael Shannon replacing Brolin and John Hillcoat directing all episodes.
Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain previously played a married couple in Take Shelter (2011), which also featured Katy Mixon Greer.
The second instance of Jessica Chastain playing a role previously played by Annette O'Toole who had headlined the Tammy Wynette TV biopic Stand by Your Man (1981). Chastain starred in It Chapter Two (2019) as Beverly Marsh, which role O'Toole had played in It (1990).
