Aside from the four lead roles, almost all the other parts were cast with Maine actors - many of whom had never before appeared in a feature film.
The role of Sam's 12-year-old daughter Allie was originally written for a boy, but child actor Elaine Landry's audition was so impressive, the gender of the character was re-written just for her.
Due to the limited budget, much of the wardrobe was bought in Goodwill shops around the state of Maine.
The diner scenes were filmed in a real, working diner: Durkee's on Islesboro, Maine.
Some scenes were filmed on actual Maine islands: Islesboro and Monhegan. Additional scenes were filmed in Rockport, Camden, Lincolnville, and Northport, Maine.
