While spending time in one of the most captivating cities in the world is enticing, the main reason to check this out is one of the best performances in the career of Liev Schreiber.

This is a film worth discovering, ideally after immersing yourself in the underrated novel.

Across the River and Into the Trees is sedate to the point of “slow,” old fashioned to a degree that will feel dated, and yet every minute of it — every gorgeous image, every twist and turn, even the predictable ones — is to be savored.

Ortiz’s film does have its charms.

It’s lifeless as a stump, and destined for box-office doom.
