A group of Chinese tourists visit an abandoned movie theatre in Thailand, because it is rumoured to be haunted. The tour guides are Ben and his girlfriend Su Su. After doing some research, Su Su's overprotective sister Su Xuan gets worried and also flies to Thailand. It seems that they have attracted some angry ghosts.
This is such a typical horror movie with all the clichés, but somehow they managed to put a very small little spin on every cliché and make them feel fresh.
It is also visually gorgeous, with every scene so beautiful. It makes me want to go to Thailand and pray at some buddhist shrines.
In contrast to American movies with their realism, Chinese movies can be a bit impressionistic, which might be confusing for beginners.
Su Xuan could probably have been played by any good actress, but the role of Su Su was a perfect fit for the actress Xie Sunny. She was lively, capricious and emotional, and added a lot of energy. It could only have been her, or it would have been a flop. I have seen her in a couple of other movies where she was just average. Maybe the director made the difference by bringing out the skill of the actors.
Ben was played by the handsome Thai actor Mik Thongraya, who had good chemistry with the others. He was also a great casting success. It was funny to see him dubbed into Chinese, but the voice actor was good too.
The other tourists all had their own backstories, but generally they functioned as cannon fodder.
The movie is short and not heavy with content; style is more prominent. The transition to the third act was abrupt and it would have been good if they had added one more short scene to bridge the gap.
The plot is simple but clean and logical. This time I guessed the solution to the mystery early, but it was not like they tried hard to hide it.
The greatest values are the esthetics and the dynamic interaction between the sisters.
