The film took nearly 3 years to complete.

Although originally released in 2012, the film was re-dubbed for English audiences, and released in 2016 to capitalize on Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016).

In the Mandarin dub of the film Jackie Chan provided the voice of Jinbao (Patrick). Jinbao's human form is even given Jackie's appearance.

Many of the fight scenes were animated with motion capture.

The film was thought up as a pseudo-sequel to Jackie Chan's Little Big Soldier (2010).
