April 22, 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, and as the global community comes together to fight the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the event serves as a reminder that we’re all living on this planet together.

From family-friendly features to critical conservationist documentaries, here’s a list of educational Earth Day programs to watch.

Disney+

The Disney streaming service has a slew of options, including the Disneynature Meghan Markel-narrated documentary “Elephant” and Natalie Portman’s “Dolphin Reef.”

There’s also conservation-minded feature films including “Avatar,” “Bambi” and “Pocahontas” — something for everyone in the family.

Earth Day also coincides with National Parks Week, and National Geographic has its eight-part “America’s National Parks” series, which highlights sites like The Grand Canyon and Yellowstone — places we’d definitely want to visit instead of sheltering at home. National Geographic also has over a dozen documentaries, including the premiere of Jane Goodall’s “The Hope.

Following this year’s launch of the Cinema Green Lab, Les Arcs Film Festival has created €10,000 cash prize which will reward the most compelling environment-themed fiction project presented at the Co-production Village.

“We have noticed that up until now, very few projects have been tackling environmental issues which are often only dealt with in documentaries. We want to contribute to change this fact,” said the festival in a release.

The festival is joining forces with the Auvergne Rhône Alpes Cinéma, the fond of the region Auvergne Rhône Alpes dedicated to the co-production of films, and with Ads, the org which operates the biggest ski resorts in the French Alps, including Les Arcs, to finance the cash prize.

A decade after making his Academy Award®-winning March of the Penguins, Jacquet spent two months shooting in the Antarctic winter using the new technology of 4K cameras, airborne drones, and under-ice diving to show the astonishing lives of these mysterious creatures in an entirely new light.

The Hollywood Music in Media Awards, recognizing music in film, TV, video games, commercials, and trailers, today announced nominees for its 2018 edition. Among the nominates films are Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut “A Star Is Born,” “Black Panther,” “BlacKkKlansman,” “Quincy,” and more.

The ceremony will feature presentations, performances, and a special achievement award. Past honorees include Diane Warren, Smokey Robinson, and Glen Campbell.

Hmma nominations are selected by an advisory board and selection committee which includes journalists, music executives, music-media industry professionals comprised of select members of the Society of Composers and Lyricists, The Television Academy, the AMPAS Music Branch, Naras, and performing rights organizations.

The awards will be held at the Avalon Hollywood on Wednesday, Nov. 14. A portion of proceeds benefit Education Through Music – Los Angeles.

This year’s Emmy race in the music categories takes on greater interest because a win in the song category could instantly give songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul an Egot, having already won Oscar, Tony and Grammy awards.

Pasek and Paul — whose “La La Land,” “Greatest Showman” and “Dear Evan Hansen” songs have catapulted them into the front ranks of American songwriters in the past two years — are nominated for their new song, “In the Market for a Miracle,” written for Fox’s “A Christmas Story Live,” an adaptation of their 2012 stage musical.

They are just two of 28 first-time nominees in the six music categories, announced Thursday morning by the Television Academy for 2017-18 programs. Fun Fact: Since the category morphed from Outstanding Informational Special in 1998, HBO has won eight of the 20 trophies and landed multiple nominations 11 times.

In recent years, documentaries with a little extra buzz have done well for themselves in this category. Both “What Happened, Miss Simone?” and “13th” benefitted from earning Oscar nominations. That bodes well for “Icarus,” which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature earlier this year. No other contenders were Film Academy nominees, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t docs or nonfiction specials with lots of buzz.

Coming off a history-making Best Drama Series victory at last year’s Emmys for “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Hulu is now hoping to build upon its momentum with projects like “The Looming Tower” and “Future Man.” The streaming giant’s 2018 Emmy Fyc mailer, which was recently shipped to the TV academy membership, showcases a whopping 14 original programs. Luc Jacquet, the documentary filmmaker behind the 2005 sleeper hit “March of the Penguins,” will revisit those denizens of the Antarctic in “March of the Penguins 2: The Next Step,” which debuted March 23 on Hulu. Morgan Freeman again narrates.

One of the biggest challenges in “Penguins 2” was reaching the location. Jacquet started in Paris, flying 24 hours to Hobart, Tasmania. From there, it was 11 days by boat through scattered icebergs, freezing waters and swirling storms before landing on the coast of Adélie Land. The director was accompanied by a crew of 11, including cameramen Jérôme Bouvier, Manuel Lefèvre and Guillaume Chamerat; oceanographer and photographer Laurent Ballesta; and diver-photographers Yanick Gentil and Thibault Rauby.

The team captured rare images that provide glimpses into the harsh environment and extreme lengths to which the birds go to raise their young.
