The original uncut pilot filmed in late 1964 was not shown until November 27, 1988 uncut for the first time as a filler. The title of the original pilot is "The Cage".
The studio decided with Gene Roddenberry to make three more pilots. "The Cage" was then merged with the new cast into a two-part pilot which ran under the title "The Menagerie".
This documentary was released for the first time on DVD from A&E Home Video and Lionsgate Entertainment on November 1, 2016.
