Bill Nye is 67 years old now, but in most ways he’s still the same enthusiastic, charming, bow-tied dude who hosted the iconic 1990s series “Bill Nye the Science Guy.” Or you might know him from the Netflix science series “Bill Nye Saves the World.” But the trained mechanical engineer still has lofty goals in working to educate the public about the world of science and how it can spur them to take action to better their lives and save a vulnerable earth. “That’s why I did this show. I wanted to change the world,” Nye says on his ambitious and apocalyptic six-episode Peacock series “The End is Nye,” “I want people to take action.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Nye is the co-writer, executive producer and host of the docuseries that’s designed to scare viewers into seizing the opportunity to halt potential disasters before they threaten the planet.

Dr. Derek Muller, the science educator behind YouTube channel Veritasium, has signed with A3 Artists Agency for representation in all areas.
Muller is from Australia and currently based out of Los Angeles. He has a Ph.D. in physics education research from the University of Sydney and launched Veritasium in 2011 as a hub for educational science videos.
Veritasium—which has nearly 13 million subscribers—became well-known thanks in part to videos where Muller asked random members of the public questions about science and found out just how common some misconceptions are. Now, it offers a broad range of content, including experiments and interviews with experts.
Muller’s success on YouTube led him to gigs hosting documentaries like Vitamania and Uranium: Twisting the Dragon’s Tail, presenting Australian science show Catalyst, and secured him a spot as a correspondent on Netflix series Bill Nye Saves the World. He’s also hosted the Google Science Fair,...

We’ve long been obsessed with disaster. On his new show The End Is Nye, beloved TV scientist and America’s father figure Bill Nye points to the storms of The Tempest, but even Shakespeare caught the catastrophe bug earlier than that. Twelfth Night opens with a shipwreck. In her menacing extreme weather speech in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Titania speaks of tremendous floods, rotting crops, and disappearing seasons. Now, we have 24-hour news channels that thrive on disaster porn.
Nye appeals to our attraction to calamity, even as he balks at it. “Think about it, people,” he declares on his debut Peacock series about the varied forms – from solar flares to careening comets – Armageddon might take. His eyes are wide, and his voice wobbles with opprobrium. “We’re like some kind of weird death cult.”

Julie Pizzi has been named president of entertainment and development at Bunim/Murray Productions. She was formerly the company’s president of entertainment and development.
Bunim/Murray (Bmp), which was originally founded in 1987 by Mary-Ellis Bunim and Jonathan Murray, is owned by Banijay. Cris Abrego is chairman of Banijay’s American operations and is also president and CEO of Endemol Shine Holdings.
Bmp is the studio behind “The Real World,” “Road Rules” and “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” “The Real World” is returning via Paramount+ (the rebranded and expanded CBS All Access) beginning with a reunion of the groundbreaking and original reality show’s original New York cast.
“Julie brings a wealth of unscripted production experience to her new role and has been a part of the Bunim/Murray family for more than 20 years, making her the ideal candidate to lead the studio into the next decade,” Abrego said on Wednesday.

Bunim-Murray Prods. has a new boss: Julie Pizzi has been named president of the Banijay-owned studio. As president of Bunim-Murray Prods., Pizzi will report to Cris Abrego, chairman of the Americas for Banijay and president/CEO of Endemol Shine Holdings. She fills the void left by the departure of longtime Bunim-Murray chairman/CEO Gil Goldschein, who officially exited the shingle earlier this month.
Abrego made the announcement of Pizzi’s appointment on Wednesday. She was most recently president of entertainment and development at Bunim-Murray. The move comes as part of a reorganization following the announcement in November that Bunim-Murray would be part of Abrego’s oversight.

Why ‘Fireball’ Producer Sandbox Films Doesn’t Need Talking Heads to Make Smart Science Documentaries
In Werner Herzog and Clive Oppenheimer’s “Fireball: Visitors From Darker Worlds,” the directors show you gloriously colorful images of meteorites containing atomic particles of five-fold symmetry, a geometric shape thought to be impossible in nature. It’s a beautiful sight, but the German auteur concedes that he “won’t torture you” with more testimony from a bespectacled professor about how the math works. That line captures the ethos for the new production company Sandbox Films, which produced “Fireball” and launched last month at TIFF with a lineup of other science-based documentary films all in development. Sandbox Films’ founders, Greg Boustead and Jessica Harrop, are determined to make informative, intelligent documentary films about science, but they want to do so with a sense of real beauty, artistry and experimental creativity all driven from filmmakers. Essentially, science can be awesome, and they don’t want to bore you. “Science television is great,...

Bill Nye — the zany, beloved, bowtie-donning host of “Bill Nye the Science Guy” — has always danced to his own tune. Whether it be as an educator for the public or as an actual dance partner, Nye has always been distinctly himself.
And before his stint on “Dancing with The Stars” — one that was cut short due to injury — Nye was well known in the Los Angeles swing dance community, a resurgence of the dance craze that originated in the 1920s. He took classes and attended swing dance events frequently in the 2000s, several years after the premiere of “Bill Nye the Science Guy” in 1993, 25 years ago.
Those who danced with Nye spoke about how he perfected the science of dance and his presence on and off the dance floor.

“You want to find out how a person feels and I felt really great but I was also very tired,” reveals Bill Nye about his inaugural Emmy win two decades ago. In our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above), he discusses his first win for “Bill Nye, the Science Guy” back in 1996: “I had difficulty with sleep deprivation. We were shooting 14 hours a day and I was living by myself and doing all that work, but I also had this feeling that I was somebody.” While Nye may have been exhausted, he did get a great experience when he finished his acceptance speech before the clock ran out. As he headed back stage, Dick Clark, then the executive producer of the Daytime Emmys, walked by and gave him a pat on the shoulder and told him, “Good job!”

Here at Et, we're obsessed with a lot of things -- and for the week of July 10 to July 16, this is what we're most excited about:
Why We're Obsessed With 'The Bold Type'
Freeform's new series, The Bold Type, follows three fearless women you wish you knew in real life. The scripted drama, which was inspired by the life of former Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Joanna Coles (who also serves as executive producer), follows three women -- Jane (played by Faking It's Katie Stevens), Kat (Chasing Life's Aisha Dee) and Sutton (Political Animals' Meghann Fahy) -- who start their careers at a Cosmo-esque lifestyle magazine. The trio struggles to find their voices while maintaining friendships, love lives and staying abreast in the bustling world that is publishing. And since the show is already being compared to a frothy mash-up of Sex and the City and Girls, we're certain it's going to be a hit! Who...

Who...

Love it or hate it, Bill Nye will return to Netflix with Season 2 of Bill Nye Saves The World. The series, which has been lambasted with accusations of political bias over science, awkward collaborations, and a general "fellow kids," vibe that didn't quite hit the mark, appears to embrace the hate in the announcement for Season 2.
While I can't say I disagree with the sentiment, I think Season 2 of the series will need much more research and effort to bring home some of the valid political arguments Nye was trying to make. The show needs to find the balance between entertainment and education and in general just try harder as opposed to snatching that low hanging fruit I felt they were grabbing at in Season 1. Are you excited for the series to return?...

Netflix’s Bill Nye Saves the World will be back for a second season, Nye revealed today in a video clip that had him dropping the mic in victory after a series of mean tweets came his way. “Bill Nye is nothing but a totalitarian eugenicist in a fake lab coat,” read one tweet popping up onscreen. Said another: “President Trump did the right thing by withdrawing us from Paris treaty – it would hurt American companies and American workers.” Nye, shown in mad-scientist mode…...

Netflix isn’t messing around with the 2017 Emmys. First, the streaming network released a flood of high-profile contenders in May — right before eligibility closed — in order to boost awareness. It even broke its own Friday release strategy to get “House of Cards” out at the very end of the month. Meanwhile, Netflix has been operating a giant FYSee space in Beverly Hills, where they host screenings and panels to schmooze TV Academy voters.
Now that the ballots are out (voting runs from June 12 to June 26), Netflix has stacked the deck in its favor one more way: category changes. Namely, they moved a couple of key limited series to the TV Movie category in order to increase their shot at nominations.

Bill Nye is trying to save the world, not edit old copies of his 1990s TV show.
Nye’s new Netflix series “Bill Nye Saves the World” has drawn the ire of some right-wing critics, who aren’t fans of his take on issues like climate change. That’s perhaps why those same critics were quick last month to pounce on the discovery that repeats of his 20-year-old series “Bill Nye the Science Guy,” now streaming on Netflix, have been edited down.
In one instance, an eagle-eyed viewer noted that one old episode no longer include a rather mundane segment in which a young woman explains sex chromosomes, and how they lead to whether a person becomes biologically male or female. Just as science has evolved in its understanding of gender identity, in his new series Nye points out that “we see more combinations in real life” than just Xx and Xy combinations.

10 episodes from the upcoming season of “Orange Is the New Black” were leaked online yesterday, which may just be the tip of the iceberg. The group calling itself TheDarkOverlord claims to have stolen dozens of other shows and films from Larson Studios, an audio post-production company based in Hollywood, including “New Girl,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “Portlandia.”

The news has yet to be confirmed, but would be trouble for a number of studios if it turns out to be true. Netflix has yet to comment since the episodes of “Orange” were released, though the company did provide a statement once it found out TheDarkOverlord had them: “We are aware of the situation. A production vendor used by several major TV studios had its security compromised and the appropriate law enforcement authorities are involved.”

Last year’s Stranger Things was notable for many reasons. Like Steven Spielberg and Stephen King before it, it managed to put relatable kids in real jeopardy in the darkest of situations. Between it being a love letter to the ‘80s, and all-around solid storytelling, it was a show that clicked with a whole lot of people, and went on to enter the pop culture zeitgeist in a big way.
Of course, if you’ve seen Stranger Things, you know that one aspect that plays a big role in the plot is the Upside Down. In the show, the Upside Down is a dark, morbid alternate universe where Will is trapped, and where the Demomgorgon lives. But what is the Upside Down from a scientific perspective?

When Netflix has a resident rock star scientist like Bill Nye on the payroll, you can bet the streaming service will put him to good use beyond just hosting his show, “Bill Nye Saves the World.”
In the video below, Nye takes on one of the scientific theories seen in Netflix’s breakout hit “Stranger Things.” On the show itself, teacher Mr. Clarke (Randall P. Havens) took a stab at explaining how to travel to an alternate dimension. His interpretation involved drawing on a paper plate and an elaborate metaphor involving an acrobat, a flea and a rope (no, they didn’t walk into a bar). The rather simplistic explanation, however, didn’t really say how said alternate dimension could exist, which is understandable. There’s no way that Mr. Clarke knew that the boys were dealing with the Upside Down.

When you think of Bill Nye, what comes to mind? Likely you imagine an excitable if not eccentric comedian dedicated to teaching children about the joys of science. For the most part, that’s what Bill Nye Saves the World delivers. However, one episode, “The Sexual Spectrum,” is decidedly more adult. Several Netflix viewers have watched Bill Nye’s explanation of human sex and sexuality, and they are Not happy about it.
“The Sexual Spectrum” tackles several current scientific theories and beliefs as they relate to sex, gender, attraction, and sexual expression.

In accomplishments, impact, and general appearance, there are few figures in history who need an introduction less than Albert Einstein, a man whose impact on global culture is well-documented and rarely disputed. “Genius,” National Geographic’s largest foray into scripted drama to date, wants to make the point that, even in his day, Einstein was already a celebrity.
Out on the streets of Berlin as a rally passes or in a lecture hall with eager observers lining the rafters, the Einstein of “Genius” becomes a figure that demands attention. His scientific insights made him a target for fascist suppressors and inquisitive thinkers alike, which makes the show’s continuous decision to boldly intone Einstein’s greatness, as if it were something to be proven, all the more curious. Context is vital to understanding the man’s true achievements, but the self-imposed, continuous weight of history somehow robs this series of...

Bill Nye has an admirable mission but an unenviable task: to combat scientific illiteracy in an era that doesn’t value expertise and reason. The title of his new Netflix TV series “Bill Nye Saves the World” isn’t hyperbole at all. It’s his hope to get viewers psyched up enough about science that they’re not just curious; they want to create a change for the better.

1. “Dear White People” Season 1 (available April 28)
Why Should I Watch It? “Dear White People” is based on Justin Simien’s 2014 Sundance sensation of the same name, pulling characters and plot lines from the satirical comedy that helped introduce us to the glory that is Tessa Thompson. While the “Creed” star won’t be returning, other breakouts from the film are, and the core story — of a predominantly white Ivy League university facing a heated racial debate after a misguided blackface Halloween party — has been refined to fit a serialized format. It is hilarious, sharp, and so timely it hurts. Don’t miss it.

For the legions of elementary and middle school students who spent hours in science labs or living rooms watching “Bill Nye the Science Guy,” the goofy, bow-tied host at the show’s center might as well be a superhero. With his labcoat and legendary “inertia is a property of matter” earworm, he even has a cape and his own theme song. Two decades after the show left the airwaves, the state of the national scientific discourse has been Nye’s bat-signal, luring him back into the public eye.
As a result, “Bill Nye: Science Guy,” the latest from “The Immortalists” duo David Alvarado and Jason Sussberg, isn’t as much about the man himself as it is the world that he feels still needs him. In his new series, Nye aims to tackle various topics from a scientific point of view – including artificial intelligence, alternative medicine and climate change. Netflix promises that Nye will dispel myths and refute anti-scientific claims while bringing in special guests, conducting experiments and demonstrations, “and ultimately letting the facts lead the argument.”
Nye, of course, was famously known as “Bill Nye the Science Guy” throughout the 1990s as the star of his own PBS and syndicated TV series.
