Exclusive: Veteran television executive and producer Kate Fenske, who has held high-level positions at Sister, Entertainment 360 and UCP, is launching Hound, an independent film and TV production company.

Hound, whose logo is based on Fenske’s own dog, already has built an initial development slate with projects set up at multiple streaming platforms and studios in the US. Fenske has partnered with Campside Media on a podcast adaptation and is working with writers and filmmakers including Alex Cunningham (Dirty John), Karyn Kusama (Yellowjackets), Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay (The Mysterious Benedict Society), Chris Rogers (Halt & Catch Fire), Christos Nikou (Apples) and Zack Whedon (Southland). She also is partnered with Carolyn Strauss, with whom she previously worked at Sister, on several projects, and has two films in the works with producer Gary Foster.

Netflix is losing a Top Gun-esque movie starring Jamie Foxx and Jessica Biel. While the streaming service is known for original movies and TV shows including Stranger Things, Orange is the New Black, Wednesday, Carry-On, and Leave the World Behind, their library is also populated with titles that are licensed from other companies. As these licensing agreements expire or change quite often, every month there are usually quite a few titles either joining or leaving Netflix.

The Top Gun-inspired movie that is departing the platform soon is one of these licensed titles, and it is particularly star-studded. Jamie Foxx is a well known multihyphenate who is a stand-up comedian and musician along with being a decorated actor, having won an Oscar for his portrayal of Ray Charles in the 2004 musical biopic Ray. He was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor that same year for his work in Collateral.

Netflix's 1992 may be a unique addition to the crime thriller genre, but viewers looking for something similar to watch have a long list of shows to choose from. The exec, who is currently Vice Chairman, NBCUniversal, a “strategic advisor” role, is set to exit the company after the end of her current contract.

It is unrelated to the corporate shake-up that happened this week that saw a slew of cable networks spun-off into a new company, leaving NBC, Peacock and Bravo under the NBCU umbrella.

After starting her career at Wgbh-tv, where she produced This Old House, Hammer worked at Lifetime before joining Universal Television in 1989. She also worked at then-titled Sci-Fi before Universal Television merged with NBC and she became president of USA Network.

She took over then-named Universal Cable Productions in 2008 and has had a variety of roles at the company including chairman of the Universal Studio Group; Chairman, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, where she oversaw the cable networks; and Chairman, Direct-to-Consumer and Digital Enterprises,...

NBCUniversal vice chair Bonnie Hammer is set to exit her role at the end of the year following the expiration of her current contract, an individual familiar with the matter tells TheWrap.

The decision to depart is hers, the individual said, and is unrelated to parent company Comcast’s recent announcement that it will spin off its cable network portfolio.

Hammer, who has over 40 years of experience in the television business, has had a hand in shows including “Suits,” “Umbrella Academy,” “Taken,” “Psych,” “Monk,” “Mr. Robot,” “The Sinner,” “Homecoming,” “The Act,” “Dirty John” and “Battlestar Galactica.”

Netflix has ordered the limited series adaptation of “East of Eden” from writer Zoe Kazan, Variety has learned.

The series was originally reported to be in development at the streamer in June 2022 with Florence Pugh attached to star as Cathy. Now, Christopher Abbott is set to play Adam, with Mike Faist as Charles and Hoon Lee as Lee. Netflix has ordered seven episodes.

Based on the John Steinbeck novel of the same name, the series is said to “explore the multigenerational saga of the Trask family, focusing new attention on its indelible antihero, Cathy Ames.”

Mr Robot showrunner Sam Esmail’s Battlestar Galactica reboot needs a new home as streaming platform Peacock has reportedly passed on it.

A new take on the space opera TV series Battlestar Galactica is no longer in development at NBCUniversal’s streaming platform Peacock, it’s been reported.

Originally announced in 2019, the Battlestar reboot was being overseen by Sam Esmail, creator of hit series Mr Robot, who was executive producer under his own company, Esmail Corp. Various writers had come and gone over its long gestation, while 2023’s Hollywood strikes also delayed work on show.

Esmail told Deadline in October 2023 that development on the new Battlestar Galactica was still ongoing, however, and things still sounded positive in January, when Derek Simonds, who wrote and directed TV’s The Sinner, was announced as its new screenwriter.

The long-gestating reboot of the popular sci-fi franchise Battlestar Galactica, from Sam Esmail’s Esmail Corp., is no longer set up at Peacock.

First announced as being in development at the NBCUniversal streamer in 2019, the new incarnation of Battlestar Galactica never got to a green light but remained in development, including a writer change within the past year as The Sinner creator Derek Simonds came on board as writer, executive producer and showrunner.

That version of the project from Simonds will now be shopped to other platforms by its studio, Peacock’s NBCUniversal sibling UCP.

A new take on the classic IP, the latest incarnation is executive produced by Simonds as well as Esmail Corp’s Sam Esmail and Chad Hamilton. UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.

Battlestar Galactica has been a passion project for Mr. Robot creator Esmail who is a big fan of the original.

Variety reports that the Battlestar Galactica reboot series, which was in development for Peacock, is no longer moving forward. I smell a Cylon conspiracy.

Former NBCU exec Frances Manfredi, who most recently was president of content acquisition and strategy at Peacock, has joined indie TV studio Future Shack Entertainment as partner and head of distribution and content strategy. The hire was announced Monday by Future Shack Ent. founders Jeff Wachtel, Sam Michaels and Yusik Choi.

USA Network is reentering the scripted originals space.

The NBCUniversal-owned basic cable network has handed out a straight-to-series order for a reboot of The Rainmaker, from producers Lionsgate TV and Blumhouse TV, marking its first non-shared scripted series since 2020.

The cabler, which saw its former hits Suits and White Collar pop on Netflix, currently shares linear rights with corporate sibling Syfy to Chucky as its lone scripted series. The drama is the only scripted original to air on the network that previously ranked as the most watched cable network for a dozen years straight.

From Apple Studios, the untitled comedy follows Pryce Cahill (Wilson), an over-the-hill, ex-pro golfer whose career was derailed prematurely 20 years ago. After he gets fired from his job at an Indiana sporting goods store and his wife walks out on him, Pryce hedges his bets entirely on a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom, played by Peter Dager.

Jessica Biel has talked about keeping her children with Justin Timberlake away the prying eyes of the paparazzi. And the actress indicated that the family may have moved away from Los Angeles partly for their kids’ privacy.

Biel appeared on the latest episode of Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera, where Ripa marveled about how she’s been able to keep her kids’ faces off of social media.

Even as a successful actress, finding success for the production company she co-founded with business partner Michelle Purple, Iron Ocean, was a 20 year process. In fact it was so hard for Biel sometimes that she thought of quiting the whole thing altogether.

“Doors did not open at all, even being in the business for so long,” Biel said on the May 15 episode of The Bright Side podcast. “I’ve had this production company with my partner, Michelle Purple, for 20 years. I started it with her when I was 22 and for the first 10 years, we had almost no success at all.

Getting The Sinner made required the patience of a saint.

Jessica Biel revealed on the podcast The Bright Side that she intended to quit Hollywood if she couldn’t sell The Sinner, which eventually went to USA Network after a long shopping period and won her an Emmy and Golden Globe nomination.

“Doors did not open at all, even being in the business for so long,” Biel said. “I’ve had this production company with my partner, Michelle Purple, for 20 years… I started it with her when I was 22, and for the first 10 years, we had almost no success at all. We had a very challenging time getting any story told.”

Then they came across The Sinner, a police procedural about unlikely culprits and their motivations. Biel said she and Purple “built that show from the ground up.”

Biel, who earned an Emmy and Golden Globe nomination for her season one role as Cora Tennetti and continued to executive produce the anthology series through its four seasons at USA, detailed on podcast The Bright Side how much working on the show meant to her.

The actress recalled that “doors did not open at all” for her production company, Iron Ocean, which she started with her business partner Michelle Purple 20 years ago. For the first 10 years, they experienced “almost no success at all” she said.

Though the production company was able to make the 2012 film The Tall Man, Biel said it wasn’t until “many years later” that they were introduced to The Sinner, which turned out to be Iron Ocean’s first major venture into TV.

The dark side of paradise is to be explored in a new documentary series for Warner Bros. Discovery’s Investigation Discovery (ID).

Fatal Destination is narrated and exec produced by Jessica Biel.

Biel has previously starred in and exec produced crime series such as Candy, The Sinner and Limetown, but this marks her first move into exec producing a true-crime docuseries.

The series will feature exotic destinations, where the consequences of being a tourist are anything but a dream vacation. Stories unfold through first-person accounts of friends, family, locals, journalists, and law enforcement.

Fatal Destination will launch in 2025.
