While on the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, director Josh Greenbaum took IndieWire behind the scenes of the planning, making, and editing of his new hit documentary “Will & Harper.” The documentary, which premiered at Sundance and hit Netflix last week, is a road trip film, as comedian Will Ferrell takes a cross-country journey with long-time friend and collaborator Harper Steele after she came out as a transwoman. The journey serves as a way for the two friends to explore how the will affect their friendship, while Steele sees if the country she loves — prior to her transition, Steele loved taking solo cross-country trips and wonders if she can travel the country with the same sense of freedom — will love her back.
Here are nine things about the making of “Will & Harper” that might surprise you, taken from Greenbaum’s Toolkit appearance.

Netflix on Thursday dropped the trailer for “Will & Harper,” its heartwarming documentary chronicling a road trip between Will Ferrell and Harper Steele, his friend of nearly 30 years.
But this is no ordinary trip between two besties who met in 1995 when both were hired at “Saturday Night Live” and quickly bonded. Steele wrote a bunch of Ferrell sketches and eventually became head writer. They most recently co-wrote 2020’s “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.” Two years ago, the actor received an email from Steele coming out as a trans woman. Ferrell had one proposition.
“Harper, would you wanna do a road trip as this new version of yourself?” Ferrell asks her in the trailer.
Will Ferrell and his close friend, former head writer at SNL, Harper Steele embark on a cross-country road trip together after Harper comes out as a trans woman in the documentary film, Will & Harper.

The feature premiered at Sundance, where it was picked up by Netflix, and later screened at Telluride, among other festivals.
The official synopsis reads: “Two years ago, Will Ferrell was filming a movie when he received a most surprising email: his dear friend of nearly 30 years was coming out to him as a trans woman. That friend was Harper Steele, a writer Will met on his first day at ‘Saturday Night Live’ back in 1995. From that fateful first meeting in the halls of 30 Rock, Will knew he had found a match made in comedy, and their friendship and creative partnership would only continue...

Australian actor George Lazenby, who had a one-and-done moment playing James Bond in 1969’s “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service,” is retiring from acting. Lazenby had the shortest tenure as the world’s most well known secret agent, starring only in the one film as 007.
A Hulu docudrama from Josh Greenbaum about Lazenby’s life, “Becoming Bond,” was released in 2017. An auto mechanic turned male model, Lazenby was the second actor to play Bond on the big screen, following Sean Connery, who starred in seven Bond pics.
On July 24, Lazenby announced his decision to retire in a post on X. Although his career has “been a fun ride,” he feels “getting older is no fun,” he wrote.
“This hasn’t been an easy decision but it’s time to announce my retirement from work,” Lazenby wrote on X. “Therefore, I won’t be doing any more acting or making public appearances,...

When comedian and actor Will Farrell learned that his longtime friend and onetime Saturday Night Live (SNL) head writer Harper Steele had come out as a trans woman at the age of 61, he, like most of us on the outside looking in, had questions. As a close, dedicated friend, however, Farrell wanted to be as respectful as possible, putting compassion and empathy first and his own, possibly unresolved feelings second (or last). To that end, Farrell suggested a 17-day, coast-to-coast road trip documented by Josh Greenbaum. The perfectly titled result, Will & Harper, follows Farrell and Steele from the first, meaningful days when Farrell received a life- and friendship-changing email where...

Few fictional characters don't require an introduction. James Bond is one of them.
Across 25 films, produced over 60-plus years, Ian Fleming's debonair, dangerous, and dashing spy has been at the center of a cinematic legacy that defies the odds. Perhaps only Sherlock Holmes offers comparison -- a character so iconic, so popular, so fully-formed, but also so flexible that it's impossible to imagine the modern pop culture landscape with him. Agent 007 set the standard. And then resets it every decade or so.
Of course, a character this important (to both fans and the producers crafting his movies) needs an actor capable of filling that tux and wielding that pistol. And here's the truth: There has never been a bad Bond actor. Sure, there have been plenty of terrible James Bond movies, but no actor has actually embarrassed themselves or the franchise. They've all shown up. They all understood the assignment.

Two years after Hulu announced that it would exclusively stream all documentaries from IFC Films, IFC Midnight, and Sundance Selects after they leave theaters, the agreement has been expanded to all narrative films released by those distributors. Subscribers will begin benefitting from the multi-year deal this summer, with the arrival of titles like “Love After Love” and Claire Denis’s “Let the Sunshine In,” which won a Director’s Fortnight prize at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.

Enough time has passed since the preemptive demise of “The Dana Carvey Show” that Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, Robert Smigel, and the comedian who gave the show its name can chuckle a bit. Twenty years after ABC pulled the plug on a subversive primetime sketch show, “Too Funny to Fail” revisits the meteoric rise and spectacular flameout that surrounded the show’s eight-episode run in the spring of 1996. Yet with decades of perspective, Josh Greenbaum’s documentary finds a surprising amount of fondness and wistfulness in a doomed project with such a public end.
Part of that bittersweet satisfaction comes from the retroactive knowledge that some of the major players in this saga would go on to shape the modern comedy landscape. Colbert and Carell got their first big breaks as “Dana Carvey Show” cast members, while Smigel would eventually go on to a vaunted comedy writing career (including being...

The passing of Sir Roger Moore at 89 marks the first James Bond to do so. And the response from one of my sons was telling: “James Bond can’t die — he’s immortal.”
That sentiment will be shared by many Bond fans, particularly the generation that grew up with Moore in the ’70s and ’80s. That sentiment will be shared by many Bond fans, particularly the generation that grew up with Moore in the ’70s and ’80s. Sir Roger Moore, the legendary English actor known for replacing Sean Connery as James Bond, has died at the age of 89.
“It is with a heavy heart that we must announce that our loving father, Sir Roger Moore, has passed away today in Switzerland after a short but brave battle with cancer,” his three children wrote in a statement posted on Twitter. Moore is also survived by his wife Kristina Tholstrup.
Moore starred in seven James Bond films, beginning with 1973’s “Live and Let Die” and ending with 1985’s “A View to a Kill.” He was knighted in 2003 by Queen Elizabeth II for his charity work, which included serving as a Unicef Goodwill ambassador. In 2008, Moore received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
“The love with which he was surrounded in his final days was so great it cannot be quantified in words alone,” his family wrote in the statement.

(The new documentary "Becoming Bond" is now showing on the Hulu network.)
By Mark Cerulli
Prior to seeing Josh Greenbaum’s illuminating documentary, Becoming Bond, which premiered on Hulu May 20th, I had dismissed George Lazenby’s mystifying refusal to continue as 007 as just another gullible young actor taking bad career advice; like Tom Selleck passing on Indiana Jones, Travolta nixing Forrest Gump, Thomas Jane handing Don Draper to Jon Hamm… but there’s more to it than that, a lot more as it turns out.
Cleverly combining interview footage of Lazenby, still hale and hearty at 77, with well-staged recreations, Becoming Bond dives deep into this complicated and impulsive star to understand How he could casually dump one of the most coveted roles in the history of film. As it turns out, that decision is symbolic of who George Lazenby really is: intelligent, charming, naïve but most of all, independent.

If you haven’t taken advantage of all that Hulu has to offer lately besides “The Handmaid’s Tale” – which everybody should really, really watch right now – then you’re missing out.
“The Handmaid’s Tale’ has been a groundbreaking series for the streaming service, thanks to its foreboding story about a near future in which a portion of the United States has been turned into a theocracy. This new world of Gilead subjugates women and makes the fertile ones become breeders for high-ranking officials. Moving performances by Elisabeth Moss, Samira Wiley, Yvonne Strahovski, O-t Fagbenle and Alexis Bledel have made this series a must-watch.
Not only does Hulu have strong original programming like “The Handmaid’s Tale,” but it is one of the best places to watch shows that are currently on TV now, which makes cord-cutting that much easier. It also has an impressive catalog of past shows that are well worth revisiting.

There’s something about the way we frame the lives of actors that makes their existence seem like something out of a fairy tale. The magical audition, the fantastical big break, the ascendency through the collective public consciousness: all form our concept of what it means to be someone in the spotlight and it can seem like an alternate form of reality.
That perception of fame is the foundation for Josh Greenbaum’s new quasi-documentary “Becoming Bond,” a look at the life of one-time James Bond actor George Lazenby through the prism of a whimsical autobiography. The film follows Lazenby’s life from a sickly preteen to his time as an auto mechanic, through his rise as a male model and into his experiences with the role that he’ll be forever known for.

George Lazenby didn’t have much time as James Bond. The Australian model and car salesman notoriously bluffed his way into succeeding Sean Connery in 1969’s “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” (in which 007 falls in love with Diana Rigg, and left grief-stricken when she’s murdered by Telly Savalas’ Blofeld). He then walked away and slipped into obscurity.
But, thanks to “Becoming Bond,” the Hulu doc premiering Saturday, the 77-year-old Lazenby steps out of the shadows. Through a hilarious combination of onscreen narration and re-enactments starring Josh Lawson, Lazenby recounts his wild exploits, filled with sex, drugs, and rebellion. It’s directed by Josh Greenbaum (“The Short Game”) as “Drunk History” meets “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.”
At Wednesday’s premiere of “Becoming Bond” at Cinefamily in Hollywood, Lazenby ranked his fleeting moments as 007 with IndieWire:

Chris Cornell died May 17 in Detroit hotel at the age of 52. It’s a passing far too soon for anyone, much less a singer who leaves behind the cultural impact of Soundgarden, supergroup Temple of the Dog, and Audioslave. But in his solo work, Cornell also left a particular cinematic legacy as the co-writer and performer of “You Know My Name,” the Grammy-nominated theme song for 2006 James Bond film “Casino Royale.”

There are many things that make this James Bond reboot (the first to star Daniel Craig) one of the better popcorn movies of the young millennium. Craig’s steely lead turn, Eva Green’s alluring subversion of Bond girl tropes, and a thrilling parkour chase sequence anchor the film from its opening black-and-white sequence to its mythology-looping close.
And all of it is jump-started by that Cornell song.

It's a battleground month, people, as streaming platforms bust out the big guns to keep viewers glued to their sofas while temperatures climb back into clemency. Three of Netflix's more notable original programs trot out new seasons; Amazon brings one of 2016's finest films to couch potatoes, as well as what may be the most radical show of 2017; and Hulu unveils a pair of documentaries shedding some well-deserved light on obscure corners of pop culture. And hey, Acorn's getting in the mix as well, importing a BBC gem for stateside viewing pleasure.

"The most mysterious man in Gotham City wasn't in a mask and cape." Hulu has released an official trailer for a documentary titled Batman & Bill, which will premiere exclusively on Hulu starting early May. The documentary "unmasks" one of the greatest secrets in the comic industry - that Batman wasn't created by Bob Kane alone, it was primarily Bill Finger who created the iconic superhero. This seems like a fascinating doc with plenty to offer for comic book fans, including inside stories and excellent art from the early days of Batman. It's cool to see a doc like this that actually looks worth watching on Hulu. They've been collecting some of their own original docs recently, including a James Bond one called Becoming Bond. Take a look. Here's the official trailer for Don Argott & Sheena M. Joyce's documentary Batman & Bill, from YouTube: Everyone thinks that Bob Kane created Batman,...

It's been an excellent year for documentaries already in 2017 with such incredible films as Icarus, An Inconvenient Sequel, Nobody Speak, and Trophy all premiering at Sundance (those last two playing SXSW as well). There have been several new great documentaries joining the conversation here at SXSW as well. It seems it could be a bumper year for docs. For James Bond fans, On Her Majesty's Secret Service has long been a favorite of many. But the story of one-and-done 007 actor George Lazenby might not be too familiar. Becoming Bond, Josh Greenbaum's follow-up to the excellent The Short Game, aims to correct that -- but in a far more entertaining way than you might expect. The spine of the film is an interview with...

Hulu has released the first trailer for an original documentary called Becoming Bond. It tells the crazy and fascinating story of George Lazenby, the actor who replaced Sean Connery in the role of James Bond for only one film after Connery ended his run. That film was On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, which is one of the best films in the franchise.
What makes this story so interesting is the fact that Lazenby had no acting experience prior to landing the role. He was Australian car salesman, who managed to lie his way into the role and a six movie deal with a $1 million bonus that he ended up turning down. That's just crazy to me, but his whole story will be laid out in this documentary, which might bend the truth a little bit.

Sean Connery played James Bond five times, from Dr. No through You Only Live Twice, before abandoning the role. He would eventually be coaxed back for Diamonds Are Forever. But before that, for a single film, another actor held the role of Agent 007. That actor was George Lazenby, an Australian mechanic with no experience […]

"Is there romance? Yes. Is there comedy? Yes. Sex? A little. Drugs? Yeah, a little. Violence? A little. Are there twists and turns? Yes." Hulu has revealed a trailer for a new documentary titled Becoming Bond, telling the story of Australian actor George Lazenby, who played James Bond in one 007 movie. This isn't exactly a straightforward doc. Not only does it include an extensive sit-down interview with George Lazenby, but to bring his story to life, this features numerous recreations. Josh Lawson plays Lazenby, who was a poor Australian car mechanic before he got the 007 gig. The full cast includes Jeff Garlin, Kassandra Clementi, Landon Ashworth, Jake Johnson, Jane Seymour, and Sofia Mattsson. As a huge James Bond fan (who loves Ohmss), I'll watch this just because it's about Bond, but man the footage looks rough. Here's the official trailer for Josh Greenbaum's doc Becoming Bond, direct from Hulu's...
