This article contains some minor The Marvels spoilers.
The heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have visited some fantastic planets. The deadly and mystical Vormir, the rat-tag assemblage on Nowhere, and Ego the Living Planet have all offered exciting new storytelling possibilities. But none capture the imagination like Aladana, visited by Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) in The Marvels. After Carol dons a striking headpiece and warns her compatriots about the planet’s oddness, a representative arrives to greet the heroes… in song.
What follows is a brief musical number, borrowing equally from Bollywood blockbusters and technicolor musicals of a bygone age. Director Nia DaCosta floats her camera around and above the dancers, taking in the luscious colors popping against the bleached white backgrounds. At the climax of the scene, Carol’s costume transforms into an elegant dress befitting a Disney princess,...

Independent distributor Film Movement has picked up all North American rights to award-winning folk horror film “Seire.” The Korean chiller will be released theatrically in 2022, followed by launches on home entertainment and digital platforms.
The film takes as its central premise the Korean superstition that nobody in the family of a baby less than three weeks old – the ‘seire’ period – should attend a wake. And that failure to take precautions risks misfortune.
The story, penned by writer and first-time feature director Park Kang, sees the father of a newborn attend the funeral of an ex-girlfriend. His encounter with her twin sister is followed by a series of unexplained and discomforting episodes.
Park previously dipped his toe in the horror genre with short film “Deal” in which a man tries to trade away his nightmares with someone reputed to be a buyer.
The cast of “Seire” is headed by Seo Hyun-woo...

Asian films about LGBT are on the rise the latest years, with films like “Our Love Story”, “Close-Knit“, “Die Beautiful” and “Fathers“. However, Takuro Nakamura takes the concept a bit further, as he combines it with the issue of cultural differences, while he also offers a rather artistic visage to the subject.

Naima is a rather shy, socially incompatible exchange student from Tehran living in Tokyo, where she studies art. Her life, though, seems to change when she attracts the interest of Kei, a radically different woman who works in a bar and has a relationship with a fashion model, Ai. Kei, however, has some troubles with her tumultuous relationship, and the somewhat morose and quiet nature of Naima draws her, with the girls quickly becoming friends. Kei seems to want more from Naima, who does not seem to share the same sentiments.
