The mystery and the tension in Cassandra, the new Netflix series, are given life by the diverse characters who come with their own varied motivations and energies. The monstrous robot, the female in crisis, and the emasculated men all find a thematic space in the series. In Cassandra, the children too have definite and considerable importance in the narrative. The film’s approach at world-building, one retro and the other modern, is an ambitious endeavor. The cast does a smooth job of presenting both worlds as convincing realities. In this article, we will acquaint ourselves with the cast of Cassandra and contemplate a little over what their characters bring to the narrative.

Sky and AMC have unveiled several first look images for the upcoming historical psychodrama series, “Mary & George,” starring Oscar and BAFTA-winning actor Julianne Moore (“Still Alice”), alongside Nicholas Galitzine (“Cinderella”) and Tony Curran (“Mayflies”).
“Mary & George” is inspired by the true story of Mary Villiers, who moulded her beautiful and charismatic son, George, to seduce King James VI of Scotland and I of England and become his all-powerful lover. Through scheming, the pair rose from humble beginnings to become the richest, most titled and influential players the English court had ever seen, and the King’s most trusted advisors. All this at a time when England’s place on the world stage was under threat from a Spanish invasion and rioters were taking to the streets to denounce the King.

A mix of “humour and bewilderment” drew German filmmaker Maria Schrader to make I’m Your Man, which will play in Competition at the virtual Berlin International Film Festival (March 1-5).

Last year, one of TV’s most fascinating trilogies came to a close. Yes, “Deutschland 89” was the culmination of a three-season-long arc of Martin Rauch, going from an informant embedded within the West Germany security forces to eventually being caught up in the aftermath of the fall of the Berlin Wall. But the show’s opening credits have become a cornerstone for the series as well, morphing from the energetic opening for the eight episodes of “Deustchland 83” through two other installments that traversed continents amidst its various time jumps through the years of its titles.
It’s an evolution headed by title designer Saskia Marka, whose recent work has spanned some of the more fascinating TV work across multiple languages. Marka helped create the striking art deco-inspired opening title card sequence for the undersung Netflix Original “Babylon Berlin,” also adapting those for the series’ subsequent seasons.
“Deutschland 89” wastes no time grabbing your attention.

The final season of the Deutschland spy series begins with an ending. In the opening episode of Deutschland 89, the Berlin Wall falls, giving East German citizens free movement to West Germany and beyond for the first time in decades. What follows in the eight-episode final season is a social study in how different people react when their reality is suddenly and fundamentally altered. In the year 2020, as the world continues to reel from the seismic changes Covid-19 has wrought, it’s an unexpectedly relatable experience.
“Deutschland 89 is really about how people have to reinvent themselves during a crisis,” says Deutschland series co-creator Joerg Winger. “So I think, in that way, it does reflect today, but that was not intentional.”
From the beginning, the Deutschland series—which launched in 2015 with Deutschland 83, continued in 2018 with Deutschland 86, and just concluded with Deutschland 89—has used history as a metaphor for contemporary politics.

For a season filled with espionage and hallucinations, stuffed animals and imminent computer technology, secret photographs and veiled assassination attempts, the lasting moment of “Deutschland 89” might just be someone reacting to something on TV.
After two full seasons (2015’s “Deutschland 83” and 2018’s “Deutschland 86”) tracking its individual players in a logistical and ideological struggle for the heart of Berlin, this latest opening episode tracks the events of early November 1989, culminating in the free movement of East German residents into West Germany and the dismantling of the wall dividing the two halves of the city.
Beginning “Deutschland 89” at this ending is an early signal that much like “Deutschland 86,” this is a season that won’t simply continue in the vein of its predecessors. For Berlin-based American writer-producer Anna Winger, creating the Netflix series “Unorthodox” offered a unique opportunity to tell a Jewish story in Germany.
The show, which premiered March 26 on Netflix, is inspired by Deborah Feldman’s 2012 memoir, “Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots,” and follows a young woman who leaves her husband and her insular ultra-Orthodox Hasidic Satmar community in Williamsburg, New York, for a new life in Berlin.
Winger, whose credits include the hit Amazon series franchise “Deutschland 83″ and its two follow-ups, “Deutschland 86” and “Deutschland 89,” co-created with husband Jörg Winger, produced “Unorthodox” via her Berlin-based Studio Airlift shingle.
The series stars Israeli actress Shira Haas as Esty, who leaves an unhappy arranged marriage and travels to Berlin, home to her estranged mother and where she hopes to study music. As she begins to navigate her new life, her husband, portrayed by fellow Israeli actor Amit Rahav,...

Four upcoming premium drama series from German production companies—“Deutschland89,” “Wild Republic,” “Algiers Confidential” and “MaPa”—have been selected for Coming Next, a section that forms part of Series Mania’s Forum program. German Films, an agency that promotes Teutonic film and TV productions, compiled the selection.
“Wild Republic” takes place at an institution at the foot of the Alps, where young offenders are undergoing an experiential educational program intended to re-socialize them. When a member of the program dies a violent death—although nobody knows exactly what happened—the youths face a difficult decision: Should they wait for the authorities to recover the body and investigate the crime, or escape and take their fate into their own hands?
The eight-part show, produced by Nils Dünker, was written by Jan Martin Scharf, Arne Nolting and Klaus Wolfertstetter, and directed by Markus Goller and Lennart Ruff.

Anke Engelke will play a funeral eulogy speaker who loses faith in her work and tries to sabotage her husband’s funeral in “The Last Word,” an original comedy drama out of Germany for Netflix.
Pantaleon Films is making the six-part series with Aron Lehmann and Carlos V. Irmscher attached as showrunners. The pair co-wrote the series with authors Nora Valo and Carolina Zimmermann. Lehmann will also direct the show.
“Just like in real life, drama and humor are clashing constantly,” Engelke said of the series. “Family and relationships, loss and grief, life and death, the absurdities of life, the rediscovery of strength and lust for life, it is all in there – so beautiful it makes you cry.”
“The Last Word” is based on an idea of Thorsten Merten. The series is the latest in a growing roster of German originals from Netflix as the streamer increasingly looks to local production.

Usually at this time of year buyers for TV outlets around the world stay keenly abreast of news about programs in the works for the fall television season. Many try to keep tabs on the hot prospects to prepare for shopping trips to come at program markets such as this week’s L.A. Lille, France — Once nearly one-way traffic, the U.S. TV trade balance with Europe is narrowing just slightly, Avril Blondelot, Eurodata TV head of content insight, suggested at Series Mania’s Lille Transatlantic Dialogues.
That may come as little comfort to European film-tv authorities as U.S. global streaming services look set to dominate the global Ott space. But it does represent one development in a now multi-layered North America-Europe TV relationship which sees the two TV powerhouses united as much as divided – in multiple co-productions and most programming trends – and a flow of talent, literary inspiration from Europe into North America.

Winger is also preparing for filming later this year of “Deutschland 89,” the final tranche of the Cold War spy tale that began with “Deutschland 83” and continued with last year’s “Deutschland 86.” The series is produced by Ufa Fiction and distributed by Fremantle.
“Unorthodox“ is loosely based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Deborah Feldman. The series follows a young woman brought up in an ultra-Orthodox community in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg district who strikes out for Berlin,...

If you've never watched Deutschland 83, you now have even more reasons to catch up on the German spy period drama. Deutschland 86 is great.
It's not easy to write a compelling second season of television, especially within a format that feels more like a miniseries than a traditional TV show to begin with.
Deutschland 83—the story of a naive, 24-year-old East German man sent to West Germany against his will to act as a spy—could easily have been a standalone story. By the end of the fast-paced, eight-episode season, protagonist Martin Rauch (Jonas Nay) has made a definitive decision about where his allegiances lie; he saves the world, but loses the possibility of a return to his life in East Germany in the process.
When Deutschland 86 picks up three years later (both in the show's timeline and in our own), we find a world wearier Martin,...

Deutschland 83 debuted on Sundance in 2015, right in the middle of the run of The Americans, a couple of months after the end of that show’s third season. The story of an East German soldier recruited to go undercover in the West German military, it functioned as a tense and lively parallel narrative to what Philip and Elizabeth Jennings were doing back in the States.
The Americans concluded earlier this year, which makes the belated sequel to the other series, now called Deutschland 86, particularly welcome. The two shows...

A third season of “Babylon Berlin,” the landmark German period drama, is set to enter production later this year, Variety has learned. The new season of Europe’s most expensive non-English-language drama will continue to follow the exploits of police inspector Gereon Rath in decadent, seedy, politically fraught pre-war Berlin.
Work on the scripts is underway, with filming expected to start in October, a production source said. Some funding is in place from German agencies Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg and Film und Medienstiftung Nrw.
The production, broadcast and distribution partners – X Filme Creative Pool, Ard Degeto, Sky and Beta Film – are in final negotiations on budgets and timing, but all are expected to board the third season. The partners said plans were underway for a new outing, and multiple sources told Variety it will happen this year.
