The main character Akira, played by Kento Matsunami, is named after the legendary Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. His father Takashi is named after Japanese actor Takashi Shimura, who starred in such Kurosawa films as Ikiru (1952), Seven Samurai (1954), and Stray Dog (1949).
John Koker, who plays the sadistic teacher presiding over the In-School Suspension, is in real life the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Provost.
Jacqueline Scislowski, who portrays one of the mean girls picking on Elizabeth, has since been cast as Zoey/Yellow Beast Morpher Ranger in the TV series Power Rangers Beast Morphers (2019).
Actress Akiko Shima, who plays the compassionate Hiroko, also portrayed the cold-hearted, nationalistic character in Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) who propels people into the army (and into death).
Prior to playing husband and wife in Another Yesterday, Naoyuki Ikeda and Akiko Shima also acted together in the 2015 short American Hikikomori (2015) . . . where Shima played Ikeda's mother.
