Dennis Hopper: Uneasy Rider (2016)
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
Alex Cox, Michael Madsen, Stephen Dorff, Isabella Rossellini, Harry Dean Stanton and Wim Wenders are among the people interviewed who discuss the life and times of Dennis Hopper.
If you're a fan of Hopper then you'll certainly enjoy this documentary, which tries to shine a light on the fact that not only was he an actor but he also had several other talents. The majority of the film does focus on his acting but there's also some nice discussions based on his photography work.
The film discusses the majority of his major works including his friendship with James Dean on REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE, the ground- breaking EASY RIDER, the disastrous THE LAST MOVIE, THE American FRIEND, APOCALYPSE NOW, BLUE VELVET and a few of his later projects like HELL RIDE. For some reason HOOSIERS, SPEED and TRUE ROMANCE are overlooked.
I really enjoyed all of the interviews and I especially liked hearing from Hopper himself who we see through some archival interviews. There are some great clips from his movies and you get a great understanding of his personal life and demons.
