Rachael Shenton signed along with her Academy Award acceptance speech (using British Sign Language BSL) after making a promise to her co-star Maisie Sly, that she would do so if they won.
The film was shown on BBC One to an audience of 3.6 million with an extended time on BBC iPlayer.
'The Silent Child' was discussed in the British House of Commons and praised by the Prime Minister for its accurate depiction and Oscar win.
The film was inspired by Rachel Shelton's father, who lost his hearing very suddenly and was profoundly deaf for the last two years of his life.
