Icelandic politician Arni sends his sister Solveig Karlsdóttir, a crime author who like him lives in the capital Reykjavik, back to their native harbor town in the Westfjorde region, to arrange a retirement home for their demented mother. During her visit, a youth friend's corpse drifts at night in the fishery port. Local police chief' Villi rules a drunk accident, case closed. Solveig sneakily arranges an autopsy by a Reykjavik coroner, who concludes a covered-up homicide. The victim ran and has an offer for selling the town's last fish factory and major employer, leading to several victims, including Solveig's youth love Binni, and a second murder occurs.

Iceland is shocked when Isolda Thorsdóttir, its world-unique 'elves guardian', officially charged with the interests of the mystical nature spirits is fatally shot, in an elves park. When crime author Solveig Karlsdóttir, from capital Reykjavik, accompanies investigating commissioner Finsen there, they find and disarm a small girl holding the murder-pistol. Solveig tries to win the confidence of Yrsa, who seems too much afraid to come clean even to mother Rósa Gunlaugsdottir about the killing. Her own demented, elves-obsessed mother helps Solveig research the 'mythical elves dimension', and find out who had an interest in eliminating their guardian.
