The medal that Constant shows to his parents at the beginning of the film is the Croix de Guerre, awarded for conspicuous bravery. Later it becomes apparent that it was awarded with a bronze palm leaf, which indicates that he was mentioned in dispatches at Army level. First instituted in 1915, the Croix de Guerre is one of the few French decorations that can also be awarded to soldiers of France's allies, so many were also awarded to British and American soldiers in both world wars.
