Jan Carstairs
- Mrs. Aylwood: What sort of a person are you? Do you sense things?
- Jan Carstairs: [shakes her head] I'm sorry... I don't know what you mean.
- Mrs. Aylwood: I think I shall have to take a chance on you.
- [then turns around and walks away]
- Paul Carstairs: [as they drive through the countryside on their way to their new home] In ten years' time, this summer will seem like the blink of an eye.
- Jan Carstairs: [unimpressed, misses Cleveland] Let's see if that works.
- [blinks]
- Jan Carstairs: Nope. It's still there.
- Jan Carstairs: [as they drive into the town, they encounter a funeral procession] Wow. This place already feels like fun.
- Paul Carstairs: Jan... have some respect.
- Jan Carstairs: Sorry.
- [as they drive past, she blinks again]
- Jan Carstairs: Nope. Still there.
- Jan Carstairs: [as her little sister wanders off] Ellie!
- [no response]
- Jan Carstairs: Ellie! Ellie!
- [still no response, so confronts her:]
- Jan Carstairs: Ellie!
- Ellie Carstairs: What?
- Jan Carstairs: Didn't you hear me? Where we're you going?
- Ellie Carstairs: I don't know...
- Paul Carstairs: What's going on, you two?
- Ellie Carstairs: She's trying to scare me again.
- Jan Carstairs: No, I wasn't. She wandered off. It was like she was sleepwalking.
- Ellie Carstairs: [huffily] I'm not sleepwalking.
- Mrs. Aylwood: ... and he needs somebody to care about the child he keeps until he gets it. That's why I made a bargain with the Watcher.
- Jan Carstairs: What kind of bargain?
- Mrs. Aylwood: I'm getting old, I'd do anything to see Karen again...
- Jan Carstairs: What kind of bargain, Mrs. Aylwood?
- Mrs. Aylwood: [tearfully] I promised him a young girl in Karen's place. The Watcher's agreed.
- Jan Carstairs: He... You offered him *me.*
- Mrs. Aylwood: No...
- [sobs]
- Mrs. Aylwood: I offered him Ellie.
- [sobs]
- Mrs. Aylwood: Forgive me.
