Horatio Alger stories don’t get much more archetypal than fitness pioneer Joe Weider’s: scrawny Jewish child of the Depression learns to defend himself from schoolyard prejudice by strengthening himself, then turns the world on to the healthy effects of weight-training and bodybuilding, and ultimately creates a fitness empire.

Movie material, right? Kid who got sand kicked in his face, like in that old cartoon, becomes the ripped dude with the hot girlfriend. And Weider actually did marry a blonde ’50s pin-up queen, Betty Brosmer. On top of that, in the late 1960s, he nurtured an Austrian nobody named Arnold Schwarzenegger to worldwide glory on the Mr. Olympia/Mr. Universe circuit. How could this story not work as a flex-and-pecs, flab-to-slab biopic of singular American success?

I don’t know, but “Bigger,” director and co-writer George Gallo’s movie of Weider’s trajectory, is a missed opportunity, the kind...

While October usually signals the arrival of all sorts of spooky, creepy, scary, and otherwise appropriately Halloween-themed films to both theaters and streaming services, this month’s batch of new titles on Netflix offers up a delightfully wide variety of choices that aren’t all tied to the year’s primary celebration of fear. Sure, those titles are there — from more mainstream chillers like “Cult of Chucky” and the new original “The Babysitter,” to more offbeat picks like the cannibal coming-of-age tale “Raw” and the seminal “Donnie Darko” — but this month’s incoming list has more than enough for movie fans who don’t want to shriek at their televisions.

The 2017 summer movie season kicked off last weekend with the strong opening for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which enters its sophomore session this weekend and will once again find itself atop the box office as the week's new wide releases*King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and Snatched*aren't looking to offer much competition. Question is, with the Guardians sequel outperforming the opening weekend of the original by more than 55% (the best opening performance for a first sequel among all Marvel Cinematic Universe films), will the second weekend for the galactic superheroes also outperform the norm? In our showdown featuring Marvel First Sequels you can see the average second weekend drop for the four other films on the list is 57.4%, an average that would have Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 delivering over $62 million this weekend.
