Exclusive: Betsy Brandt is set to executive produce and star in the newly greenlit Lifetime movie The Bad Orphan. Chloe Coco Chapman will make her television debut alongside Brandt and additional cast members Mark Taylor (Reacher) and Eve Edwards (The Good Doctor).
From writer Doris Egan, the psychological drama centers on Jessica (Brandt) and Karl (Taylor), loving parents to Rhiannon (Edwards), who after years of trying to add to their family are elated to adopt Gabby (Chapman), an 8-year-old orphan born with personal challenges. Their ideas of a perfect family come into question when they discover that Gabby is a troubled little girl, and the family begins to believe things aren’t what they seem.
As the unsettling behavior of their “child” worsens and lies are uncovered, cracks in the family dynamic form with Jessica increasingly becoming concerned that adopted daughter Gabby is a threat to their family.

The Chopping Block is one of the first upgrades players can construct for their Workbenches in Valheim. Workbench upgrades are key parts of player progression in Valheim; after placing them, players gain access to additional crafting recipes and the chance to upgrade their items even further. In addition, the Chopping Block upgrade is relatively cheap, making it a worthwhile investment for players in the early game as it gives them access to more crafting recipes in exchange for a relatively small amount of collected resources.
Once players have found the best place to build a base in Valheim, they should be able to establish a firm foundation for long-term survival. Again, the Workbench is key, as it provides a central point where players can begin construction, and it can be gradually upgraded throughout the game. To upgrade the Workbench with a Chopping Block, players need to gather 10 Wood and 10 Flint.

Flint is an essential early-game resource for Valheim players, but depending on world seed and spawn locations, it can be difficult to find. Flint is used to craft flint weapons, which are one step above basic stone tools and are a crucial part of player progression in Valheim. It can also be used to build upgrades for Valheim’s workbenches, allowing players to access more complex crafting recipes. However, given the scarcity of some resources in Valheim, players will need to know how and where to gather significant stockpiles of this useful resource.

U.S. documentary specialists Cargo Film & Releasing have snapped up world rights to an Alec Baldwin-narrated feature documentary investigating the water poisoning crisis in Flint, Michigan. (Watch a trailer for the film above.)
Directed by British “You’ve Been Trumped” filmmaker Anthony Baxter, and co-produced with the BBC, the film, which is being shopped to buyers virtually attending the Cannes market, is billed as the untold story of what happened to Flint after news coverage of the scandal died down. Flint was made famous by documentarian Michael Moore, who grew up there and featured the city’s journey with General Motors in his critically acclaimed film “Roger & Me.”
Flint’s troubles began in 2011 after the state took control of its finances following a major deficit. To cut costs, the city announced a new pipeline to deliver its water, but when that project was delayed, Flint River became a provisional water source.

ReFrame and IMDbPro have awarded 62 television and streaming series their first-ever ReFrame Stamp for Television, Variety has learned exclusively.
The ReFrame Stamp was created by ReFrame, a coalition of industry professionals founded by Women in Film and the Sundance Institute, to recognize projects that have demonstrated success in gender-balanced hiring. Productions that receive the stamp are those that hire female-identifying people in four out of eight critical areas of production, including writing, directing, showrunning, producing, lead acting roles, season regular acting roles, department heads and crew members. Those series must reflect diversity across all of the season, not just specific episodes. The data was collected with IMDbPro.
The inaugural round of recipients include all five of Shonda Rhimes’ shows, Frankie Shaw’s “Smilf,” Issa Rae’s “Insecure,” Tanya Saracho’s “Vida,” “Broad City” from Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson and Amy Sherman-Palladino’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” among others. Over...

An episode of television that’s an homage to a TV series just won an award for being a movie; not only for being a movie, but for being the best movie in a field of, well, at least five.
Saturday night, “Black Mirror: USS Callister” took home the Emmy for Outstanding TV Movie, beating out well-reviewed films like Jennifer Fox’s “The Tale,” Barry Levinson’s “Paterno,” and Bruce Beresford’s “Flint.”
This is the second year in a row an episode of Charlie Brooker’s Netflix series has triumphed in the TV Movie category, and the third year a non-movie has won, given “Sherlock’s” victory for a “TV special” in 2016. This fact alone should be enough of a tip-off something has gone wrong here; after all, even if sequels that don’t rhyme with “The Toddfather: Fart Flu” actually won Oscars, this isn’t the Oscars. It’s the Emmys.

“Black Mirror: USS Callister” has won the Emmy for Outstanding TV Movie, making it two years in a row the Netflix anthology series has submitted an episode as a movie and won the category.
“USS Callister” is the feature-length first episode of “Black Mirror” Season 4. Written by series creator Charlie Brooker and William Bridges, the movie tracks Robert Daly (Jesse Plemons), the Chief Technical Officer of a video game company by day and Captain of the USS Callister by night — inside the game he created. Soon, his virtual colleagues start to show signs of life, and the science-fiction adventure takes off from there.
“USS Callister” is nominated for seven Emmys, including writing, editing, and Plemons is up for lead actor. It’s won three Emmys in 2018 so far, including TV Movie, Sound Editing, and Single-Camera Picture Editing. Last year, “Black Mirror: San Junipero” won two Emmys — for Outstanding TV Movie and Writing.

“Black Mirror” is the defending Emmy champ for Best TV Movie, having won in 2017 for its standalone episode “San Junipero.” Now Gold Derby contributor Riley Chow is expecting the anthology series to triumph once again. “I think you’re going to have a lot of Emmy voters who are just catching up on [the previous] season now,” he explains, “or maybe haven’t even seen or heard of these other [nominees].” Chow recently joined fellow contributors Amanda Spears and myself to dissect the category, which will be presented at the Creative Arts ceremony a week before the primetime telecast. Watch our entire slugfest above.

My heart is absolutely broken. I loved Craig.
It is so rare that someone with such immeasurable talent also has such an incredible soul. For everything he accomplished, there was no ego, no pretense — just complete passion and positive energy.
I have collaborated with a number of different people over the years, but my friendship and work relationship with Craig spanned over decades. We collaborated with one on another on “Chicago,” “Hairspray,” “Steel Magnolias” and “The Wiz,” not to mention the Emmy-nominated “Flint” project. He always had such an incredible and precise view of what he wanted but at the same time was so synergistic.
Before diversity and inclusion was a talking point, Craig (along with Neil Meron) always broke the barriers and made room for everyone. His vision had no boundaries. He was so supportive of me from the first time he and Neil and Rob [Marshall] cast me in...

If “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” wins for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) this year, it would be the ultimate tribute to executive producer Craig Zadan, who died this week at the age of 69, following complications due to shoulder replacement surgery. Zadan and producing partner Neil Meron have been behind countless TV movies and events, films, and Broadway musicals over the years — and their productions have received countless Academy Award, Primetime Emmy Award, and Tony Award nominations.
“Craig’s distinguished career as a passionate and consummate producer is eclipsed only by his genuine love for the thousands of actors, directors, writers, musicians, designers, and technicians he worked with over the years,” NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt said. “His absence will be felt in our hearts and throughout our business.”

Craig Zadan, the prolific producer known for his touch with stage, TV and film musicals including NBC’s recent return to live event productions and three Academy Awards telecasts, has died. He was 69.
Zadan died Monday night at his Hollywood Hills home of complications from a recent shoulder replacement surgery, NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt announced Tuesday.

With more and more movie stars transitioning to television, the number of previous Oscar winners in contention at the Emmys continues to grow. Several Academy Award champs number among the 2018 Emmy nominees that were announced on Thursday, July 12.
One of the most recent Oscar victors in the Emmy lineup is Allison Janney, who won Best Supporting Actress earlier this year for playing an acid-tongued mother in “I, Tonya.” Now she contends for Best Comedy Actress for her small-screen role as another flawed matriarch in “Mom,” which has already brought her two Emmys in the supporting category (2014 and 2015). Janney is a perennial favorite of the TV academy, with 14 total nominations and 5 additional wins.
Janney’s predecessor in the Oscar Supporting Actress category, Viola Davis (“Fences” in 2016), missed out on a Best Drama Actress nom for “How to Get Away with Murder” this year. But she nonetheless showed up in Best Drama...

Some of the biggest surprises in the 2018 Emmy nominations, which were announced on July 12, were in the races for movies and miniseries. We thought “Twin Peaks” would clean up, but while it swept Creative Arts categories and earned top noms for its writing and directing, it was snubbed for Best Limited Series and in all acting categories — no Kyle MacLachlan or Laura Dern! Our forum posters were also shocked by the absence of Al Pacino (“Paterno”) for Best Movie/Mini Actor, and they’re up in arms over Evan Peters‘s latest snub for “American Horror Story: Cult.”
But there were bright rays of hope. Our derbyites appreciated the surprise nominations for Regina King and especially Adina Porter (“Ahs: Cult”).
Read some of our forum posters’ reactions below and then be sure to join the discussion to give us your thoughts. And check out the complete list of nominations here.

As everyone looks to the major nominees for star-studded battles, let’s not forget that many familiar faces are popping up left and right in some less-publicized Emmy categories. FX’s “Y: The Last Man” pilot has set its main cast.
Diane Lane has signed on to star in the drama series pilot, which is simply titled “Y,” along with Barry Keoghan, Imogen Poots, Lashana Lynch, Juliana Canfield and Marin Ireland.
Based on DC Comics’ acclaimed series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, the project traverses a post-apocalyptic world in which a cataclysmic event has decimated every male mammal save for one lone human. The new world order of women will explore gender, race, class and survival.
Keoghan will play Yorick Brown, the main character from the graphic novels on which the show is based. He is described as a young man quick to use humor to deflect from his problems who may be the lone male survivor of a worldwide plague.

This year’s Primetime Emmy Awards nominations are set to be unveiled Thursday, after another noisy season of campaigning with plenty of drama to go around. There are several new series looking for the embrace of the Television Academy, and still more returning after hiatuses long and short. What kind of a mixture will we be looking at on final ballots?
Here’s one final stab at guessing the major categories.
Drama Series
“The Americans” (FX)
“The Crown” (Netflix)
“Game of Thrones” (HBO)
“The Handmaid’s Tale” (Hulu)
“Stranger Things” (Netflix)
“This Is Us” (NBC)
“Westworld” (HBO)
Netflix is battling to find room for one of its new programs, like “Mindhunter” or “Ozark,” but return bids for “The Crown” and “Stranger Things” are more likely. The only new series that has a fighting shot otherwise is AMC’s “Killing Eve,” a binge-watching hit with a dedicated fanbase. In all likelihood,...

Is David Lynch just too damn weird for Emmy voters?
That’s a question that could be answered by Emmy nominations in the limited series and television movie categories, where Lynch’s return to “Twin Peaks” on Showtime is both a monumental achievement and one of the strangest things ever put on television.
Among the top contenders in the limited series category, the 18-episode “Twin Peaks” is longest piece of work by more than six hours — and it’s also so bizarre that it makes the last season of “Westworld” look like a model of concise storytelling. There’s a real question as to whether Lynch’s flights of fancy will be embraced or scorned by voters.
Among the other contenders, FX’s Ryan Murphy is always a major presence in these categories, with his big entry this year not the post-election edition of “American Horror Story” but the second...

“There’s a lot more competition this year,” states contributing writer Amanda Spears about the Emmy race for Best Limited Series. Unlike the last two years, there isn’t a “Big Little Lies” (2017) or “American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson” (2016) that’s “so far above the others that it’s going to sweep.” Instead, “this is going to be one of those years where somebody in fifth or sixth [place] could win.” Spears hashed out the odds with fellow contributors Zach Laws and Riley Chow in a recent slugfest (watch the video above), which also covered the races for Best TV Movie, Best Movie/Mini Writing and Best Movie/Mini Directing.

“Project Runway” has been stuck on the Emmy runway for far too long.
It’s been nominated for Best Reality-Competition Program consecutively for the 13 years since it debuted on TV, but it’s been forced to step back year after year for winners in that category with slicker production values and heart-swelling songs (“The Voice” won 4 times), etc. Victories by “The Voice” are particularly noteworthy since they occurred over the past 5 years; the last 3 victories were consecutive.
Now “The Voice” seems unstoppable much like “Amazing Race” once outran all rivals in the old days. Over the past 15 years of this category’s existence, those two programs have hogged the winners’ circle with only one exception: “Top Chef” had the secret recipe for a shockeroo in 2010.
But that means more upsets are possible – so the Emmy hopes of “Project Runway” remain alive. It’s already won two Emmys in other categories in the past.

At this year’s Emmys, Lifetime is hoping voters drink up its Best TV Movie contender “Flint,” which chronicles the ongoing water crisis in that poisoned Michigan town. Starring Queen Latifah, who also produced the film, “Flint” tells the story of a local woman named Iza Banks who’s dealing with the town’s lead in the water supply. The Writers Guild Awards already rewarded the project for Barbara Stepansky‘s script based on the Time Magazine cover story “The Poisoning of an American City,” so might the Emmys follow suit?

“How could you not want to tackle that?” says producer Neil Meron about taking on the story of the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, in the Lifetime original movie “Flint.” The film follows a “group of women who actually were the whistle-blowers” who helped expose the dangerously high levels of lead in the drinking water due to government cost-cutting. “They were soccer moms or just people with families that were economically challenged, and then having this put upon them inspired them to action.” Watch Meron discuss “Flint” in our exclusive video interview above.
Meron and his producing partner Craig Zadan have “taken on some social and political issues” in their work in the past. She’s won an Oscar. She’s won a Tony. Can she now win an Emmy? Catherine Zeta-Jones is on the 2018 Emmy ballot for Lifetime’s telefilm “Cocaine Godmother: The Griselda Blanco Story,” in which she portrays a real-life drug dealer in the trafficking industry. A year ago the idea of Zeta-Jones coming to television seemed far-fetched, but then she took on the iconic role of Olivia de Havilland in Ryan Murphy‘s “Feud: Bette and Joan.” Zeta-Jones didn’t earn any Emmy love for that project, but might she receive a nomination for “Cocaine Godmother”?

Constance Zimmer believes that bringing in a female suitor for season three of “UnReal” created a dynamic “that we haven’t seen before” between her character, the tough-as-nails producer Quinn, and her protege Rachel (Shiri Appleby). In its first two seasons this satirical behind-the-scenes look at a reality dating competition series featured bachelors searching for love among casts of eligible women. This year the sexes were flipped, with determined career woman Serena Wolcott (Caitlin FitzGerald) sifting through a variety of men. “It made both of them very aware of how much they take down women, even though that’s not their goal,” Zimmer explains. The two had to ask themselves, “How do you manipulate and empower a woman at the same time?” Watch our exclusive video interview with Zimmer above.

Emmy voters often love Oscar winning movie stars like Nicole Kidman (“Big Little Lies”), Jessica Lange (“American Horror Story”), and many more. And this year could see more Oscar champs claim TV’s biggest prize, including Al Pacino (“Paterno”) and Penelope Cruz (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace”). But as television programming continues to expand with cable and streaming the small screen has become a playground for Oscar favorites behind the camera as well. So how many this year will make the cut?

This is simply a bizarre Emmy category this year with notable performances from a ton of projects that earned mixed reviews at best. Laura Dern “should” get in for a film that debuted at Sundance before HBO acquired it, “The Tale,” as should Jessica Biel for “The Sinner,” but everyone else? Their chances are tenuous at best. [Posted April 3]
Frontrunners
Jessica Biel, “The Sinner”
Laura Dern, “The Tale”
Michelle Dockery, “Godless”
Queen Latifah, “Flint”
Elisabeth Moss, “Top of the Lake: China Girl”
Carey Mulligan, “Collateral”
Almost there
Hayley Atwell, “Howards End”
Edie Falco, “The Menendez Murders”
Dakota Fanning, “The Alienist”
Sarah Paulson, “American Horror Story: Cult”

Winners of the 2018 Writers Guild of America Awards were revealed on Feb. 11 in ceremonies held simultaneously in Los Angeles and New York. As only screenplays written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are eligible for consideration, these kudos, which are celebrating their 70th anniversary, have not been the most reliable barometer of the Oscars.
Indeed, one of this year’s leading contenders for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars — Martin McDonagh for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” — was ruled out of the running by the guild. However, that WGA race does include four of the other Academy Awards nominees — “The Big Sick,” “Get Out,” “Lady Bird” and “The Shape of Water.” It is rounded out by “I, Tonya.” Jordan Peele won for “Get Out” edging out Greta Gerwig, who had been predicted to win for “Lady Bird.”

“Feud: Bette and Joan” may finally shed its bridesmaid status. Ryan Murphy and his writing team on the FX anthology series will win Best Long Form Original at Sunday’s Writers Guild Awards, per our latest predictions, for the show’s first big victory all season. “Feud” has 2/13 odds to take home the prize, ahead of “Godless” (16/1 odds), “American Horror Story: Cult” (40/1 odds), “Manhunt: Unabomber” (66/1 odds) and “Flint” (80/1 odds).
Outside of a handful of makeup and hairstyling awards, “Feud” has come up short at all the major awards shows, having the misfortune of going up against the behemoth that is “Big Little Lies.” It lost all the limited series prizes to the HBO hit when going head-to-head, while its lead stars Jessica Lange, Susan Sarandon, and supporting players Alfred Molina, Stanley Tucci, Jackie Hoffman and Judy Davis have fallen to “Big Little Lies”‘ Nicole Kidman, Alexander Skarsgard and Laura Dern,...
