Coen’s follow-up to 2025’s Drive-Away Dolls – Honey, Don’t – is set to arrive in early summer of this year, it’s been confirmed.
Following the release of Drive-Away Dolls to something of a mixed reception last year, Ethan Coen has once again partnered with Tricia Cooke to collaborate on the next entry in their planned lesbian B-movie trilogy: Honey, Don’t.
The project entered production last March and boasts an enviable leading trio of Margaret Qualley, Aubrey Plaza and Chris Evans. Shooting wrapped up in May and 12 months later, the film is slated to arrive (in the US at least) with World Of Reel stating that Honey, Don’t is slated for a May 2025 release.
The thought of Aubrey Plaza working with Ethan Coen is a happy one, but perhaps the real draw here is seeing Chris Evans in a role that hopefully reignites a career which, post-Captain America,...

The celebrated director, Ron Howard, proves his directorial prowess yet once again through visually compelling storytelling of an almost forgotten fantasy. In the Heart of the Sea, a masterpiece from the Angels & Demons director, will keep you hooked to your screens from the beginning till the end.
It is heartwarming to find out that the all-time classic Moby Dick was based on true accounts of the whaling sea vessel called the Essex that sank. In fact, the Black Doves actor Ben Whishaw who portrayed the author Herman Melville, went to interview the last survivor of the Essex so that he could pen down the legend of rampaging white whale for all of us.
While the storyline is gripping, the other factors that make the movie great cannot be ignored. The cinematography, make-up, and costumes, as well as special effects really set the correct tone of the era in which...

Netflix's new Western series has become a global success. Producing original movies and TV shows since the early 2010s, the streaming service's catalog of Western content now offers a diverse range of stories exploring the rugged charm of the American frontier. Longmire was A&e's highest-rated original drama before Netflix picked it up in 2014, starting with season four, and releasing the sixth and final season in 2017. Around that same time, the Western miniseries Godless was also released on Netflix to rave reviews.
The Coen brothers' Western anthology film, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, was released on Netflix in 2018, presenting six separate tales that blend humor and tragedy and showcase the unpredictability of frontier life. The Harder They Fall, released on Netflix in 2021, is one of the few Westerns with a predominantly Black cast, showcasing a diverse narrative and fresh perspective within the genre. Joel Coen is to direct another film solo in 2025, meaning the reunion of Joel and Ethan on a movie is further put back.
After decades of working as a directing duo – a collaboration that stretches all the way back to 1984’s neo-noir, Blood Simple – the last seven years have seen a significant shift in the Coen brothers’ output. They’ve instead opted to make solo projects, with 2018’s The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs currently standing as their last film together.
While it’s been interesting to see each brother pursuing their own projects and see how they function as individual storytellers, when news emerged around a year ago that they would be reuniting to write and direct a ‘pure horror’ story, it was a welcome announcement.
According to a new report (via World Of Reel), it’s possible that we may be waiting a while longer for that project, as...

Miller's Crossing, one of the greatest gangster movies ever made, is an extremely underrated movie created by The Coen Brothers. As one of the best directing duos of all time, The Coen Brothers have directed classic films such as The Big Lebowski, Inside Llewyn Davis, Fargo, and No Country for Old Men. Joel and Ethan Coen have directed a total of 20 films together beginning with the 1984 neo-noir crime film Blood Simple.
Following their feature film debut, the Coen Brothers' sophomore effort was the 1987 crime comedy Raising Arizona, which remains one of Nicolas Cage's most iconic roles. They then went on to direct the showbiz comedy Barton Fink, the satirical comedy O Brother, Where Art Thou?, the black comedy Burn After Reading, and the instant classic Western True Grit. The Coen Brothers' last joint effort was 2018's The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

The Coen brothers’ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is one of the greatest westerns of the 21st century — but the movie’s legacy has been reduced to a meme. Released on Netflix in 2018, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is an anthology movie showing several very different perspectives of the Old West. It’s named after its opening sequence, in which a joyful singing cowboy played by Tim Blake Nelson is challenged to a gunfight, but the five shorts that follow range from lighthearted comedy to harrowing tragedy.
There’s a segment in which a mismatched group of travelers share a stagecoach ride to Fort Morgan, Colorado. In today's age of the internet, memes are a language. Knowing the most current memes and being able to use them appropriately counts as eloquence. The appropriateness of a meme obviously depends on the juncture of a conversation in which it is used, usually eliciting laughter from the callback or reference to a memorable instance of pop culture. From movies and celebrity interviews to song lyrics and comic book panels, any audiovisual piece of work can become the source of a meme if a moment from them is consistently referred to across various contexts.
The popularity of a meme can often even have a profound impact on its source material, from generating buzz about a movie by becoming viral to keeping a show relevant, like Friends memes that prove it is still relatable. With six separate stories taking place in the Old West, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs endings each offered something new while all sharing similar themes within Joel and Ethan Coen's Western anthology. The Oscar-winning Coens had previously explored this genre but were able to tell a variety of Western tales here. The movie is separated into six stories, each with its own thought-provoking and brutal ending: The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Near Algodones, Meal Ticket, All Gold Canyon, The Gal Who Got Rattled, and The Mortal Remains.

Marc Maron, Gaby Hoffmann and David Krumholtz have joined the cast of Jeremy Allen White’s Bruce Springsteen biopic “Deliver Me From Nowhere.”
Maron will play Chuck Plotkin, the music producer who mastered Springsteen’s “Nebraska” album, turning his unprocessed cassette demos into a high-quality record. Hoffmann will portray Springsteen’s mother, Adele Springsteen, a singer in her own right who died at age 98 earlier this year. Krumholtz will play Al Teller, a record label executive who oversaw the release of “Nebraska.”
From Disney’s 20th Century Studios, “Deliver Me From Nowhere” follows Springsteen during the creation of his 1982 album “Nebraska,” a stripped-down record that marked a creative shift from the anthemic “Born to Run” and “The River.” The movie is currently filming in New Jersey and New York. Springsteen, who is involved in the making of the film, visited the set earlier this week and was photographed hugging White.

Production designer Jess Gonchor has worked on some of the most acclaimed and rewatchable movies over the last two decades, including every feature film directed by Bennett Miller, every Joel and Ethan Coen movie from “No Country for Old Men” through “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” and notable one-off titles such as “The Devil Wears Prada,” Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women,” Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise,” and John Krasinski’s recent hit “If.”

Tim Blake Nelson recalls the extreme nature of working on Steven Spielberg's Lincoln. Nelson is an actor who is best known for his roles in films such as The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, O Brother, Where Art Thou, and The Incredible Hulk, and he played Richard Schell in Lincoln. The Spielberg movie features a leading cast including Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Hal Holbrook, and Tommy Lee Jones.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Nelson explains how intense working on Lincoln was. According to Nelson, lead actor Day-Lewis managed to "commit not only himself, but the entire production to a work ethic and to esthetic principles in terms of the process." What this means is that "there were never any anachronisms on set," affecting everything from how people dressed to what they were allowed to bring on set. For almost 40 years, Joel Coen and Ethan Coen – better known as the Coen Brothers – have created a number of quirky, singular titles spanning a variety of genres. They’ve also become industry and academy favorites, picking up four Oscar wins for writing, directing and producing. Celebrate this dynamic duo by taking a look back at all 18 of their films together, ranked worst to best.
The Coens made their feature debut with the Southwestern neo-noir “Blood Simple” (1984). Shot on a shoestring budget with a then largely unknown cast, the film established the brothers’ talent for visually striking, wholly original stories.
They followed their breakout hit with a series of increasingly ambitious, wildly different features: the wacky Southern farce “Raising Arizona” (1987), the moody gangster saga “Millers Crossing” (1990), the bizarre Hollywood satire “Barton Fink” (1991), and the nostalgic screwball comedy “The Hudsucker Proxy” (1994).

Tim Blake Nelson, the character actors’ character actor, has spent a career adding to a “rogues gallery of dysfunctional weirdos” on film and TV, from the singing convict in O Brother, Where Art Thou? and the singing gunslinger in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs — both from the Coen Brothers — to Wade Tillman, a paranoid cop with incredible interrogation skills and a severe case of Ptsd in HBO’s Emmy-winning TV series Watchmen, to the supervillain Samuel Sterns, aka The Leader, in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, a role Nelson will reprise, 16 years later, in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World.
Along the way, Nelson has also gone behind the camera, directing film versions of his plays Eye of God (1997) and The Grey Zone (2001), adapting Shakespeare’s Othello, setting it in a modern-day high school with O (2001), and shooting two of his original screenplays: Kansas (1998) and Leaves of Grass (2009).

Well into the new dark crime comedy Greedy People, I had to check IMDb to make sure this wasn’t some movie one or both of the Coen brothers had actually made and somehow I didn’t realize before diving in. Nope, it was Potsy Ponciroli who directed, and Mike Vukadinovich who wrote it. No Coens anywhere in sight except as the clear inspirations for this entertaining movie of which the masters behind Blood Simple and Fargo would probably approve, and might even have made at the beginning of their illustrious careers.

The debut feature by India Donaldson has great reviews at 96% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes and starts in limited release on three screens in New York and LA.
The theatrical market is pretty complicated right now and original independent films have fewer champions. These new indie distributors — and there are others — see a necessity and a business proposition in nurturing them.
“There is still very much an audience for these movies when they are really good,” Laub tells Deadline.

The theatrical market is pretty complicated right now and original independent films have fewer champions. These new indie distributors — and there are others — see a necessity and a business proposition in nurturing them.
“There is still very much an audience for these movies when they are really good,” Laub tells Deadline.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs earns a respectable score for its historical accuracy due to how it pokes fun at depictions of cowboys in the 1930s and '40s. The 2018 Netflix Western depicts a violent saloon with partial accuracy, but exaggerates other elements for stylistic or dramatic effect. The Coen Brothers proved themselves masters of the Western with The Ballad of Buster Scruggs after three previous well-received explorations of the genre.
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, the Coen Brothers' Netflix Western, earns a high accuracy grade from an Old West historian. Released on the streamer in 2018, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs comprises six vignettes, all of which chronicle different aspects of life on the American frontier in the 19th century. The well-received Western anthology film features a star-studded cast across the six shorts, with actors including Liam Neeson, Tim Blake Nelson, James Franco, and Clancy Brown.

Get your first look at ‘Coen brothers-style’ comedy Greedy People, starring Himesh Patel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and more. Here’s a trailer:
Lionsgate has revealed the trailer comedic crime movie, Greedy People, starring Himesh Patel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lily James, Tim Blake Nelson, Uzo Aduba, Nina Arianda, Jim Gaffigan, Joey Lauren Adams and Simon Rex.
Potsy Ponciroli directs the film which opens on the 23rd August, and we have to admit, we’re more than a little intrigued by the undoubted quality of that ensemble cast. And also more than a little intrigued by Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s facial hair too (he also flirted with beard usage in this year’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F – this is turning into a trend).
Here’s the synopsis for the film:

Western genre may recycle tropes, but its versatility showcases a mix of conventions, subverted tropes, and trend-setting styles in its best films. Mid-20th-century directors explored the Western genre's possibilities beyond expectations, influencing contemporary storytelling. Best Westerns include classic good-vs-evil stories with great characters, still shaping modern action and adventure genres.
Westerns have often been criticized as a genre offering the same, tired tropes and recycled stories something that many blame for the genres death following its huge popularity from the 1930s to the late 1960s. However, while Westerns draw from the same well of iconography to tell their stories thanks to their setting, the genre is incredibly versatile and diverse. Just like the greatest films of any major, foundational genre, the best Westerns ever made are a mix of conventions executed at their peak, classic tropes being subverted to break genre boundaries, and trend-setting cinematic styles.

The First Family of Marvel Comics has company. With a summer start date in London, “Fantastic Four,” the essential comic book IP which has yet to be integrated into the MCU, has announced new cast members that will join Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm (later Sue Storm-Richards), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (the Ever-Lovin’ Blue-Eyed Thing).
Giving them cosmic grief will be Ralph Ineson as Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds. Ineson has a slew of solid smaller roles in film and television—from “Game of Thrones” to “Peaky Blinders” to “Chernobyl,” and has worked with Mike Leigh in “Another Year,” Steven Spielberg in “Ready Player One,” Joel and Ethan Coen in “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” and played the Death Eater Amycus Carrow in three “Harry Potter” films. With eleven feature films under Wes Anderson’s belt, we can now quickly add another. While the director’s recent batch of Roald Dahl adaptations were released as short films––so the first could compete for the Oscars––now that Anderson has indeed taken home his first Academy Award, he’s realizing his complete vision for the project.
Just after he nabbed his Oscar, Netflix announced they will release Wes Anderson’s anthology feature The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More, combining all four shorts and adding a new original song by Jarvis Cocker, this Friday on the platform. Just as another Netflix anthology release, Coens’ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, is considered a feature, from this day henceforth let it be known The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More is Wes Anderson’s twelfth feature.

“Dune: Part Two” features one of the starriest casts in recent memory. From Timothée Chalamet to Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista and more, there’s rarely a scene in the Denis Villeneuve-directed sequel that isn’t filled with star power. The cast was supposed to be even bigger, however, but the filmmaker had to make some cuts to the final edit that left at least one actor “heartbroken.”
Tim Blake Nelson, a regular of the Coen Brothers thanks to films such as “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” and “O Brother, Where Art Thou?,” was announced as a cast member for “Dune: Part Two” in January 2023. He does not appear in the theatrical release.

Few things are more frustrating when you’re an actor than having your scenes cut from a project. Especially if the project in question is one of the year’s most celebrated releases. Unfortunately for Tim Blake Nelson, his part in Dune: Part Two is on the cutting room floor, and the film’s director, Denis Villeneuve, has no intention of sharing his scenes with audiences. It’s nothing personal; it’s just the way things shook out.
Speaking with Collider about editing the second chapter of his science-fiction opus, Villeneuve said he’s “a strong believer that when it’s not in the movie, it’s dead.” In other words, don’t count on the Blu-ray release for Dune: Part Two to have deleted scenes as part of the physical release’s bonus features. “Sometimes I remove shots and I say, ‘I cannot believe I’m cutting this out.

Asleep in My Palm is a story of characters asserting their agency through romantic exploration. Tim Blake Nelson shines in a dramatic role, while newcomer Chloë Kerwin holds her own next to the veteran actor. The film's visual style is a standout, with Ohio's brutal winter serving as a powerful backdrop for the characters' struggles.
It's misleading to say that Asleep in My Palm is a tale of sexual awakening. If anything, romantic exploration is merely a tool for the characters to assert their agency. The movie marks Henry Nelson's directorial debut and features his father, Tim Blake Nelson, starring and producing. As Henry Nelson also wrote the film, it's interesting to see how much it explores the nature of parent-child relationships. Tom (Blake Nelson) is an impoverished father who tries to build a life for his daughter, Beth Anne (Chloë Kerwin). However, he soon finds he can't keep her from the world forever.

Drive-Away Dolls' Rotten Tomatoes Score Is A Harsh Reality Check After Breaking 20-Year Coens Streak
Drive-Away Dolls breaks Coen Brothers' 20-year streak, diverts from critical acclaim. Solo Coen projects receive mixed receptions, while partnership has almost guaranteed success. Comedy-heavy Coen Brothers' films tend to have their lowest Rotten Tomatoes scores.
Ethan Coen's latest film, Drive-Away Dolls, has received a mixed critical reception, breaking a 20-year streak from the Coen Brothers. Known for their consistent excellence in making compelling original films since the 1980s, the Coens have become known as some of the most accomplished contemporary filmmakers. They've won an Academy Award for Best Picture for No Country For Old Men and directed several other cult classics like The Big Lebowski and Blood Simple. After The Ballad of Buster Scruggs in 2018, the brothers parted ways to work on separate projects.
The Coen Brothers together deserve to be mentioned among the best directors of all time, though their merits individually are too few to argue for.

In 2018, the film world unknowingly received a major swan song: the last Coen Brothers movie. That November, Joel and Ethan Coen’s Western anthology film “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” released on Netflix, marking the 18th feature from the Minnesota-born filmmakers.
In the years that followed, the two did something they never did across the first three decades of their career: go solo. Elder brother Joel was the first to branch out with 2021’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” an expressionist, gorgeous staging of William Shakespeare’s iconic play with Denzel Washington and Coen’s own wife Frances McDormand in the lead roles. Ethan followed shortly with the “Drive-Away Dolls,” a raucous comedy co-written with his wife Tricia Cooke (an underrated constant in the duo’s career is their wife-guy natures) and styled as a lesbian-slanted version of classic Coen Brothers comedies like “The Big Lebowski” and “Raising Arizona,” with Margaret Qualley...

A few details have emerged regarding the next collaboration between Ethan and Joel Coen, as the brothers look to reunite as a filmmaking duo to make a ‘pure’ horror..
Ethan Coen bought some welcome news into our lives last week, confirming that he and his brother Joel are “working on writing something” together again, which we hoped was a precursor to them reuniting once again as a directing duo.
The pair have been writing and directing as a partnership ever since their 1984 debut, Blood Simple. However, the last project that each filmmaker worked on was a solo outing: in 2021, Joel made The Tragedy Of Macbeth while Ethan has co-directed Drive Away Dolls, a ‘lesbian road movie’ due to release next month following a strike-related delay from last year.

One half of the Coen brothers is still flying solo with a follow-up film announced to his upcoming lesbian road trip movie, Drive-Away Dolls. It’s called Honey Don’t!
Just last week we heard from Ethan Coen that he and brother Joel, the artists collectively known as the Coen brothers, are once again working on a project together. Given that the duo’s long-time partnership seemed to have paused back in 2018 following The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs for Netflix, that was cause for celebration.
Not that we’re opposed to each filmmaker working on solo projects: the last movie that each filmmaker worked on was a solo outing, although the world at large has only seen one thus far: in 2021, Joel made The Tragedy Of Macbeth while Ethan has co-directed Drive Away Dolls, a ‘lesbian road movie’ due to release next month following a strike-related delay from last year.

Joining Qualley in the cast are Aubrey Plaza (My Old Ass) and Chris Evans (Pain Hustlers). Details as to the film’s plot are currently under wraps, though Deadline understands it’s a comedy in the same vein as Drive-Away Dolls.
