The future of high-profile unscripted NBC series including Amy Poehler’s Making It and Kristen Bell’s Family Game Fight! is up in the air as the network has indefinitely parked them.
Making It, Family Game Fight and AGT: Extreme did not make it into NBC’s schedule and it seems that they are the latest non-scripted series to neither be canceled or renewed – in a growing trend as highlighted by Fox earlier this morning as well as ABC with series such as Supermarket Sweep and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?
It comes as the network has revealed that two of its other big unscripted series The Wheel and Million Dollar Island will launch in midseason.
Making It, which is co-hosted by Parks and Recreation stars Poehler and Nick Offerman, has run for three seasons on the network. The craft competition premiered in July 2018, its second season debuted in...

NBC revealed its fall 2022-2023 lineup Monday, which includes “La Brea” occupying the current Tuesdays at 9 p.m. home of “This Is Us,” as well as the “Quantum Leap” reboot series taking the coveted post-“The Voice” launchpad. On a season that includes new coach Camila Cabello, that’s an even nicer slot to occupy as the broadcast network’s splashy new drama.
Mondays in the fall will begin with the two-hour episode of “The Voice” at 8 p.m., followed by “Quantum Leap” as its lead-out at 10.
On Tuesdays, “The Voice” will kickoff the night with its one-hour edition at 8 p.m., leading into “La Brea” at 9. With the end of “This Is Us” just two episodes away, NBC had to hand the slot over to another drama for the fall and made the logical choice with breakout hit “La Brea,” which did well in the spot last fall when...

Swiss national film archive Cinémathèque Suisse is finishing up a new restoration of Hans Trommer and Valerien Schmidely’s 1941 romantic drama “Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe” (“Romeo and Julia in the Village”), considered one of Switzerland’s best films of all time.
It is one of a number of recent restorations carried out or made possible by the film archive, which recently opened its impressive new Research and Archive Center in Penthaz, equipped with a film digitization lab and a vast storage facility.
“Romeo and Julia in the Village” is particularly significant for the Cinémathèque Suisse. “It was totally unsuccessful when first released, but it is considered one of the best, if not the best Swiss film,” says Cinémathèque Suisse director Frédéric Maire. “We wanted to restore it for a long time but it was very difficult to find all the necessary elements because the original negative was recut...

Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time series would seem to defy adaptation with its massive cast of characters, centuries of history, and sprawling world map. The danger of alienating longtime fans of the books with inaccuracies or confusing newcomers with too many details is very real. However, showrunner Rafe Judkins was up to the challenge, deciding which aspects of the novels made the story original and bringing those key aspects to television. “I think it’s our job to both be true to the Wheel of Time books but also be mindful of… the things that could feel repetitive [and those] that are fresh and unique,” he says.
The Wheel of Time doesn’t rely on a single protagonist, for example, but instead introduces three unwitting young heroes in a familiar fantasy journey, escaping those who would prevent them from fulfilling important destinies they know nothing about. Josha Stradowski is the...

NBC has set its Fall 2021 primetime schedule, and fans of “This Is Us” may be a bit disappointed: the drama’s sixth and final season will wait until midseason. Same for comedy viewers — NBC does not have a single one on its fall schedule. You know who won’t feel let down? “Law & Order” fans, who will have an entire weeknight dedicated to the Dick Wolf franchise.
On Thursdays, newcomer “Law & Order: For the Defense” will lead in to “Law & Order: Svu” at 9 p.m. Season 2 of “Law & Order: Organized Crime” — yeah, that one is renewed — airs at 10 p.m.
NBC will have “Chicago” Wednesdays and “Law & Order” Thursdays: six *straight* primetime hours of procedural dramas from Wolf’s mind.
Other highlights on the fall schedule include newcomer “Ordinary Joe,” which NBC describes as a “what-if drama,” getting “The Voice” Mondays at its lead-in. Fellow freshman...

The unscripted TV business has never been as glamorous as the movie business or the premium scripted world, but the past 12 months of the pandemic have highlighted how important the sector is to the entertainment world.
Shows like The Voice, The Masked Singer and The Bachelor franchise have propped up the broadcast networks during a rotten year, and Disney and Fox have launched their own alternative units to double down in the genre.
There’s a growing hunt for talent, both working with A-list stars that have overall deals on the scripted side, and new voices that can help find the next Dancing With the Stars or American Idol, while all of the major suppliers are continuing to search for international formats that can become the next big hit.

As the UK is in the grips of a major second wave of coronavirus, it was the Queen who helped bring the nation together around the television on Christmas Day.

Iranian director Firouzeh Khosrovani has won the IDFA award for best feature-length documentary with “Radiograph of a Family,” a film that uses an intimate study of her parents’ marriage—her father was secular, Westernized and progressive, while her mother was a devout, traditional Muslim—to explore the divisions in Iranian society both in the run-up and aftermath of the Iranian Revolution in 1979.
The jury, which comprised Marie-Pierre Macia, Ed Lachman, Alice Diop, Abdelkader Benali, and Finn Halligan, praised Khosrovani for the strength of her storytelling, adding, “The fractured body of family life is told through images, photos, and enactments in such a way that the viewer, too, feels the loss.”
Contacted by Zoom, the director screamed with delight. “I’m honored,” she said, after taking a second or two to collect her thoughts. “I have no words to express how happy I am,” she enthused. “I just want to thank...

Australian action thriller “2099: The Soldier Protocol,” starring David Arquette, has been picked up for international sales by Los Angeles-based Spotlight Pictures. Directed by transgender woman Dee McLachlan (“The Jammed”) it will be launched for buyers at the European Film Market.
Boosting the film’s sales potential is an agreement with Vertical Entertainment to release it in North American theaters on March 27.
The film, released in Australia as “The Wheel,” is the story of a neuroscientist who is forced to take part in a project to build an enhanced human fighting machine. McLachlan, who was born in South Africa and transitioned gender after moving to Australia, weaves in themes of greed, loss and humanity, and questions our compliance in such atrocity, all in the name of science.
The cast also includes Jackson Gallagher and Kendal Rae. Production is by Melbourne-based shingle SunJive Studios.

It's a fusion of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Fresh Off the Boat Season 6 Episode 9 after Louis made it as a contestant on the show.
Jessica, Eddie, and Emery were in the audience of the taping, while Grandma Huang and Evan were on the couch ready for Louis' lifeline call.
Amidst Louis' contemplation of the answer choices, flashbacks were provided of previous interactions that helped him figure out the right answers to Regis Philbin's questions.
Most of the interactions revolved around Louis chatting with Eddie about handing down Cattleman's Ranch to him.
Eddie had many suggestions of items to add to the menu, but Louis was especially against his Asian fusion idea of the cow-bao.
Originally Eddie thought it was just because of Louis' need to control everything, but later learned it was because he didn't want to be a stereotype.
I have a photographic tongue. I remember every taste.

Lyon, France — This coming Saturday and Sunday, the Lumière Festival will turn back the clock nearly one hundred years as the festival premieres a new completed reconstruction of Abel Gance’s 1923 masterpiece “La Roue” (“The Wheel”) that restores the classic to its original 7.5 hour length.
Consisting of a prologue and four movements, “La Roue” will screen at the 1,800-seat Auditorium of Lyon over the course of two days, with the backing of conductor Franck Strobel and the National Orchestra Lyon.
The French and Swiss Cinemateques, alongside Pathé and The Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé Foundation, undertook the significant venture, which was a labor of love for Foundation president Sophie Seydoux.
“I’ve had the idea for more than seven years,” says Seydoux. “’La Roue’ is one of the most legendary silent films in Pathé’s catalogue, but no version of the initial 1923 version has ever been seen again.”

Lyon, France — Leading Italian restoration company L’Immagine Ritrovata’s acquisition of renowned film lab Eclair Cinéma, announced last month, is expected to be approved by the French Commercial Court of Nanterre, according to a source familiar with the deal.

Cluj, Romania–Alejandro Landes’ “Monos,” a survival thriller about a group of rebels set deep in the jungles of Colombia, won the top prize at the Transilvanian Intl. Film Festival on Saturday, with the jury praising the Sundance player “for its hypnotic power through its minimalist storytelling, committed cast, and unsentimental portrait of young people with guns.”
After a week of heavy rains in Cluj that swept across the cobbled streets of its historic city center and disrupted countless open-air screenings, a palpable air of relief seemed to settle over the red carpet Saturday evening, as guests climbed the steps of the National Theater at twilight accompanied by the strains of a string quartet.
Looking back at a week of screenings that continued the festival’s tradition of pushing the envelope with bold and provocative programming, Tiff artistic director Mihai Chirilov described from the podium the “experiment” behind the official...
