The Pogues are reissuing their Christmas classic, “Fairytale of New York,” on 7-inch vinyl to raise money for a charity supported by late singer Shane MacGowan.
All proceeds will go to Dublin Simon Community, an organization dedicated to preventing and ending homelessness. MacGowan frequently participated in the charity’s annual Christmas Eve Busk; his last public performance was for the 2021 Simon Busk, during which he performed “Dirty Old Town.”
The 7-inch single will feature “Fairytale of New York” on the A-side, with the instrumental of the song on the B-side. It costs roughly $12, with $7.50 from each sale going to Dublin Simon Community. Pre-orders are ongoing.
“We would like to say a huge thank you to The Pogues and Shane MacGowan’s family for their generosity in creating such a special legacy for Dublin Simon Community with this release,” Emma Kilkenny, Head of Fundraising & Communications at Dublin Simon Community, said in a statement.

Shane MacGowan’s funeral was as much of a celebration of his music as it was of the man. In the streets outside of the church, mourners joined in unison to sing some of MacGowan’s most beloved songs with The Pogues. Inside, Nick Cave gave an emotional rendition of “A Rainy Night in Soho,” and Glen Hansard and Lisa O’Neill teamed up for a rousing performance of “Fairytale of New York.”
Fittingly, MacGowan’s band delivered the final performance of the ceremony, as Spider Stacy led The Pogues’ surviving members in a rendition of “The Parting Glass.” It marked the band’s first time playing together since 2014.
MacGowan died on Thursday, November 30th at the age of 65 from what was later revealed to be complications from pneumonia and viral encephalitis. See further tributes to MacGowan from Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, and Bono, and read our very own Jonah Krueger...

As captured in videos posted on social media, fans who had been waiting on the streets to see MacGowan’s funeral procession pass stuck around, which led to an impromptu jam session. Musicians equipped with banjos, harmonicas, and tin whistles led the arrangements, as the chorus of Dubliners sang songs like “Dirty Old Town” and the Pogues Christmas masterpiece, “Fairytale of New York.”

Continuing her annual tradition of releasing holiday charity singles, Phoebe Bridgers has recruited fellow boygenius members Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker along with the Irish folk duo Ye Vagabonds for a cover of the popular traditional ballad “The Parting Glass.” Stream it below.
All net proceeds from the track will go to the Aisling Project, an after school intervention program that works with children and young people growing up in a disadvantaged area of Dublin. The phrase “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey,” which has often (and perhaps erroneously) been attributed to American writer Ralph Waldo Emerson, was a familiar saying by about 1920. And it makes perfect sense that the phrase roughly coincides with the dawn of cinema, because filmmakers have been cinematically paraphrasing it for much of the last 100 years.
The latest example is “End of Sentence,” a road movie from first-time Icelandic feature director Elfar Adalsteins. The film drops John Hawkes and Logan Lerman in the northwest of Ireland for a father-son adventure that suggests that it’s not the journey or the destination – it’s the travelers who are on that road.
That’s because Hawkes and Lerman are subtle, naturalistic performers who spin gold out of settings that could easily seem clichéd. You pretty much know that these guys are on the road to understanding, acceptance and reconciliation,...

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, let us raise a dirty glass to the spirit of Irish music, wherever in the world it shows up. And like the Irish people themselves, Irish music shows up everywhere, usually a few moments after the bottles get opened. There’s always been plenty of great music on the island, but the really staggering part (apart from all the staggering) is how far that music travels, following the immigrant experience.

"We don't know what really went on..." Sony Pictures has unveiled the official trailer for an indie drama titled The Parting Glass, the feature directorial debut of English actor Stephen Moyer. The Parting Glass stars Oluniké Adeliyi, Edward Asner, Paul Gross, Rhys Ifans, Melissa Leo, Cynthia Nixon, Anna Paquin, and Denis O'Hare. When it came to the new dark comedy series “Flack,” Anna Paquin said that as a producer, she was attracted to the quality of creator Oliver Lansley’s writing — but it was the character that ensured her involvement both behind and in front of the camera. “It just happened to be a character that I’m like ‘yeah, I’m not giving that to someone else,'” she said. “If I was not right for that character it would still be something I would want to produce. It’s a “True Blood” reunion for “The Parting Glass” star Anna Paquin.
Sitting down with Variety’s chief film critic Peter Debruge, Paquin discussed the release of her newest independent movie at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic. The drama was written by and also stars Denis O’Hare, Paquin’s former co-star on “True Blood,” while Stephen Moyer, Paquin’s husband and “True Blood” love interest, makes his directorial debut on the feature. The trio also have a production company together.
“One of the things that Denis and Steve were playing with is the idea of memories being unreliable,” Paquin said.
Featuring an ensemble cast that also includes Rhys Ifans, Melissa Leo, Cynthia Nixon, and Ed Asner, “The Parting Glass” revolves around a “family coming together in the wake of the suicide of one of the siblings,” Paquin explained. “It is a pretty challenging and quite dark,...

Anna Paquin, who came to the Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival to present indie film “The Parting Glass,” which she acts in and also produced, dropped by the Variety Critics Corner to discuss her latest project and her career with film critic Peter Debruge.
The actress, who won an Oscar for best supporting actress at age 11 for Jane Campion’s 1993 film “The Piano,” said she has been following her passion for storytelling ever since. Her career arc has embraced such diverse projects as “Almost Famous,” three X-Men movies, and 81 episodes of HBO’s “True Blood.”
It was “The Piano,” which won the Palme d’Or in Cannes, that launched Paquin’s connection to film festivals. She recognizes how critical they are for promoting films such as “Glass,” a dark story about a family coming together in the wake of the suicide of one of the siblings. In Denis O’Hare’s script for “The Parting Glass,” which plays Sunday at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, the actor delves into a deeply personal tragedy – the suicide of his sister in 2010. Anna Paquin, who plays his sibling in flashback, delivers an incredible range of varying visions and memories of the lost Colleen as the Missouri family members of Danny (O’Hare) try to sort through their feelings and come to terms with their collective loss. The broken husband (Rhys Ifans) joins the siblings and the aging father (Ed Asner) on a journey to unearth painful truths.
“The Parting Glass” is O’Hare’s first filmed screenplay, and the directorial debut of Stephen Moyer, Paquin and O’Hare’s co-star on “True Blood.” O’Hare’s other acting credits include “This Is Us” and “American Horror Story,” both of which earned him Emmy nominations, and “Milk” and “Dallas Buyers Club,...

Naming a film after a famous song can be mildly distracting: As much as we’re swept up in the action at hand, a small part of our brains keeps semi-patiently waiting for the tune to turn up. In “The Parting Glass,” Stephen Moyer’s modest but rather lovely directorial debut, you wait for the eponymous Irish folk song to kick in toward the end, as befits its gorgeous, farewell-themed lyrics, and so it does — used in pretty much the exact way one might have expected, but no less stirring and satisfying for that. That’s an outcome typical of this finely wrought, deeply felt family drama, in which a fractious Irish-American clan of adult siblings gathers to mourn their recently deceased kid sister: Written with great humor and humanity by actor Denis O’Hare — who also takes a key role in a classy ensemble that includes Melissa Leo, Cynthia Nixon,...

The Karlovy Vary Film Festival, the leading movie event in Central and Eastern Europe, will honor Tim Robbins with its award for outstanding contribution to world cinema, the fest announced Tuesday, and the actor will screen two pics he directed and wrote, the acerbic polemic “Bob Roberts” and the tribute to pre-wwii music and politics “Cradle Will Rock.”
Robbins, who also wrote music for several of his films, including “Bob Roberts” with brother David, will perform with The Rogues Gallery Band. Terry Gilliam will also roll into the Czech Republic spa town for the fest, running June 29 to July 7, to screen “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote,” his disaster-prone take on the Cervantes classic that took 18 years to complete and premiered in Cannes.
