Exclusive: Quiver Distribution has acquired U.S. and Canadian rights to A Bit of Light, the second feature helmed by Stephen Moyer, on the heels of 2018 family drama The Parting Glass. Starring Moyer’s wife, True Blood co-star and Emmy and Oscar-winner Anna Paquin, as well as Ray Winstone (The Departed), the film is an adaptation by Rebecca Callard of her Bruntwood Prize-winning play of the same name. The Pogues are reissuing their Christmas classic, “Fairytale of New York,” on 7-inch vinyl to raise money for a charity supported by late singer Shane MacGowan.

All proceeds will go to Dublin Simon Community, an organization dedicated to preventing and ending homelessness. MacGowan frequently participated in the charity’s annual Christmas Eve Busk; his last public performance was for the 2021 Simon Busk, during which he performed “Dirty Old Town.”

The 7-inch single will feature “Fairytale of New York” on the A-side, with the instrumental of the song on the B-side. It costs roughly $12, with $7.50 from each sale going to Dublin Simon Community. Pre-orders are ongoing.

“We would like to say a huge thank you to The Pogues and Shane MacGowan’s family for their generosity in creating such a special legacy for Dublin Simon Community with this release,” Emma Kilkenny, Head of Fundraising & Communications at Dublin Simon Community, said in a statement.

Shane MacGowan’s funeral was as much of a celebration of his music as it was of the man. In the streets outside of the church, mourners joined in unison to sing some of MacGowan’s most beloved songs with The Pogues. Inside, Nick Cave gave an emotional rendition of “A Rainy Night in Soho,” and Glen Hansard and Lisa O’Neill teamed up for a rousing performance of “Fairytale of New York.”

Fittingly, MacGowan’s band delivered the final performance of the ceremony, as Spider Stacy led The Pogues’ surviving members in a rendition of “The Parting Glass.” It marked the band’s first time playing together since 2014.

On Friday, December 8th, fans, friends, and collaborators alike came together to honor the Irish icon’s life and legacy with a moving funeral in Dublin. Outside the St Mary’s of the Rosary Church where the ceremony was held, though, another touching tribute was taking place: mourners took to the streets of Dublin to sing MacGowan’s songs.

As captured in videos posted on social media, fans who had been waiting on the streets to see MacGowan’s funeral procession pass stuck around, which led to an impromptu jam session. Musicians equipped with banjos, harmonicas, and tin whistles led the arrangements, as the chorus of Dubliners sang songs like “Dirty Old Town” and the Pogues Christmas masterpiece, “Fairytale of New York.”

Thousands of mourners converged on St. Mary of the Rosary Church in Nenagh, Ireland, on Friday to pay their respects to the late Pogues frontman, Shane MacGowan. MacGowan died of complications from pneumonia on Nov. 30.

Those in attendance included Nick Cave, Johnny Depp, Bob Geldof, and Ireland’s President, Michael D. Higgins, according to Sky News. MacGowan’s sister, Siobhan MacGowan, told the congregation that her brother’s veins had run “with Irish blood.”

Continuing her annual tradition of releasing holiday charity singles, Phoebe Bridgers has recruited fellow boygenius members Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker along with the Irish folk duo Ye Vagabonds for a cover of the popular traditional ballad “The Parting Glass.” Stream it below.

All net proceeds from the track will go to the Aisling Project, an after school intervention program that works with children and young people growing up in a disadvantaged area of Dublin. The charity was chosen by the Estate of the late Sinéad O’Connor, who recorded her own version of the song in 2002.

This year’s choice is “The Parting Glass” — a Scottish and Irish traditional that Sinéad O’Connor recorded in 2002 — which also features the Irish folk duo Ye Vagabonds. Just like all of Bridgers’ holiday songs, the proceeds will be donated, this time to the Aisling Project. Chosen by the Sinéad O’Connor Estate, the Aisling Project is an after school program for children and young people in Dublin, Ireland.

The singer announced concert dates for his first set of performances in the United States in almost five years.

The series of shows begin on May 6 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and will continue until September 23 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

New projects by Vivarium director Lorcan Finnegan and Maudie filmmaker Aisling Walsh are among 27 chosen for the inaugural edition of The Voice, Screen Ireland’s development scheme for emerging and established directors.

Each director is eligible for up to €30,000 in funding across a maximum of two projects.

Matthew Shreder’s Concourse Media has closed a raft of sales on Jai Courtney crime drama Semper Fi and is understood to have concluded a multi-territory deal with a major studio.

Lionsgate released the film in the Us last month and rights have gone in the UK (Signature Entertainment), Madman (Australia and New Zealand), France (L’Atelier d’Images), Spain (Twelve Oaks Pictures), Cis (New People Film Company), and Benelux (Three Lines Entertainment).

Sometimes a film comes out of nowhere and surprises you with a trailer and a release date. We pride ourselves on staying up to date with as many of the upcoming films as we possibly can, but somehow “The Parting Glass” snuck under our radar. Ed Asner and Alan Cumming are set for key recurring roles opposite Rosario Dawson in Briarpatch,the first season of USA Network’s anthology series, from writer-executive producer Andy Greenwald, executive producer Sam Esmail, Universal Cable Prods. and Paramount Television. The series is currently in production in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Based on the Ross Thomas novel, Briarpatch was written for television by Greenwald, who executive produces alongside Mr. Robot and Homecoming‘s Esmail through his production company Esmail Corp and Anonymous Content’s Chad Hamilton. Ann Lily Amirpour also served as an executive producer on the pilot. In addition to her starring role, Dawson will be a producer on the series.

Sitting down with Variety’s chief film critic Peter Debruge, Paquin discussed the release of her newest independent movie at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic. The Karlovy Vary Film Festival, the leading movie event in Central and Eastern Europe, will honor Tim Robbins with its award for outstanding contribution to world cinema, the fest announced Tuesday, and the actor will screen two pics he directed and wrote, the acerbic polemic “Bob Roberts” and the tribute to pre-wwii music and politics “Cradle Will Rock.”

Robbins, who also wrote music for several of his films, including “Bob Roberts” with brother David, will perform with The Rogues Gallery Band. Terry Gilliam will also roll into the Czech Republic spa town for the fest, running June 29 to July 7, to screen “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote,” his disaster-prone take on the Cervantes classic that took 18 years to complete and premiered in Cannes.

Concourse Film Trade, the sales and financing arm of Matthew Shreder and James Andrew Felts’ Concourse Media, will introduce worldwide buyers in Cannes to their previously announced sales title The Parting Glass.

The drama recently wrapped production in Toronto and reunites True Blood’s Anna Paquin with her co-lead and real-life husband Stephen Moyer, who makes his feature directorial debut.

Productivity Media, founded by William G. Santor, Andrew Chang-Sang and John Hills, is co-financing the project and serves as executive producer with Concourse Media.
