Allisyn Snyder came up with many of the quirks and mannerisms for the character Heather, such as leaning to the side to peek out, and erratically looking around the room during long takes early on where she didn't have any lines. In July 2019, The Hollywood Reporter announced that AP Bio had been un-cancelled and season 3 will air NBCUniversal's upcoming streaming service.
Show creator (and SNL alumnus) Michael Patrick O'Brien attended high school in the real Ohio town in which A.P. Bio is set: St. John's Jesuit High School in Toledo, Ohio.
