[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for NCIS: Hawai’i Season 3 Episode 5 “Serve and Protect.”] Well, there’s no need for Ernie (Jason Antoon) to continue to sneak around trying to get answers about why Sam (LL Cool J) is really on the island: NCIS: Hawai’i reveals what the Osp agent has been up to and why he’s been so secretive. In “Serve and Protect,” Sam has Jane (Vanessa Lachey) meet him in the war room and turns on the Scif (sensitive compartmented information facility) mode. NCIS Elite is his cool new action team, with those with a special set of skills taking on off-the-books missions no one is supposed to know about. (“NCIS Elite—watch that be the next new part of the franchise in the world,” Yasmine Al-Bustami quips to TV Insider.) Sam’s not trying to enlist Jane (he knows she’d never accept) but rather needs her help with someone in Elite’s custody,...

Coming up on NCIS: Hawai’i is one protection detail assignment Lucy (Yasmine Al-Bustami) really doesn’t want. And the longer it goes on? The more that’s true. In the March 25 episode, “Serve and Protect,” the team is tasked with protecting Tatiana, the daughter of a Russian oligarch carrying a deadly secret. Stuck with the hardest part of that—actually spending time with Tatiana—is Lucy, and the other woman knows much more about her than she’s comfortable with. Al-Bustami previews the assignment, talks about Lucy and Kate’s (Tori Anderson) future, including that conversation about weddings, and much more. Lucy must protect the daughter of a Russian oligarch, and that gets intense both in terms of the action and also in terms of someone who knows stuff about her she’d rather she didn’t. What can you preview? Yasmine Al-Bustami: First of all, she doesn’t...

A new NCIS: Hawai’i episode features LL Cool J in another important subplot.
LL Cool J continues to play Agent Sam Hanna within the NCIS Universe. The character first appeared in a backdoor pilot on NCIS; moving to NCIS: Los Angeles the following fall.
Sam became a free agent when NCIS: Los Angeles got canceled, and he showed up to save the day in the NCIS: Hawai’i Season 2 finale.
Much of NCIS: Hawai’i Season 3 has featured Sam helping out Jane Tennant and her team in one way or another, all while seemingly having ulterior motives for being on the island.
The downside is that more scenes with LL Cool J have taken time away from other characters. But he has also brought an additional toughness and action feel to the NCIS spin-off.
The first new episode of NCIS: Hawai’i following the latest hiatus will follow that pattern, with...

Buoyed with Paco Plaza’s “Sister Death” riding high in Netflix non-English film global rankings for a second week running, Los Angeles, Mexico City and Madrid-based El Estudio has named seasoned Spanish showrunner Tirso Calero, creator and script co-ordinator on “Servir y Proteger,” “Bandolera” and “L’Alqueria Blanca,” as TV contents director in Spain. He is based out of Madrid. His incorporation coincides with the creation of a TV division at El Estudio, which Calero will head up.
Taking effect from last week, the appointment makes large strategic sense. El Estudio founders and chiefs Enrique López Lavigne and Pablo Cruz are among the top and most cosmopolitan film producers in the Spanish-speaking world, Cruz ranking as Mexico’s best-known arthouse/crossover movie honcho and a driving force behind modern-day Mexican cinema when heading up Canana; and López Lavigne rating as one of Spain’s most innovative producers, seen most recently in...

Exclusive: Canada’s Waterside Studios is developing scripted projects with an array of North American writing and production talent.

On the procedural front is Serve & Protect, a drama series co-produced with Berger and Dicresce’s December Films, which is best known for Syfy horror comedy Reginald the Vampire. Content group iZen has optioned Eduardo Mendoza’s acclaimed Spanish historical novel “City of Marvels” (La Ciudad de los Prodigios) and is developing it as a six-part series. No broadcaster or streaming platform has yet been attached to the project.
iZen’s Zebra Producciones was behind epic Amazon Prime Video historical series “El Cid,” with “Money Heist” star Jaime Lorente, which will return for a second season this year.
Published in 1986 and translated into 14 languages, “City of Marvels” chronicles the protagonist Onofre Bouvila’s journey from small-time hustler to one of the richest people in Spain. The multi-generational story is set against the backdrop of Barcelona’s social and cultural evolution at the turn of the 20th century, as the city shook off its medieval past and reinvented itself as a vibrant modern metropolis.
The deal was brokered by NewCo Audiovisual, the Barcelona-based iZen company formed in 2018 to produce scripted series and international co-productions.
