Now is your chance to find out how to sing like Julie Garland, deal with being Edina Monsoon’s Pa and play a critically acclaimed chicken
It surprised a lot of people when Bubbles, the dippy personal assistant from Absolutely Fabulous, turned out to have a belter of a singing voice. Jane Horrocks showed off her chops in the 1998 film Little Voice having already conquered the stage with the lead role in The Rise and Fall of Little Voice.
Since then, Horrocks has become part of the fabric of the nation. On the big screen, she’s voiced a knitting-loving chicken in 2000’s Chicken Run and a duck opposite Bill Murray’s Garfield. In the flesh, she appeared in Dexter Fletcher’s Proclaimers jukebox musical Sunshine on Leith, and opposite Rob Brydon in 2018 sports comedy Swimming With Men. Warren Coleman, who co-directed George Miller’s 2006 animated Oscar-winning smash hit Happy Feet, is set to direct live-action family adventure feature Stripey.
The film — currently in development — follows a single-parent family of refugees from Kashmir, a long-thought-extinct Tasmanian tiger and a colorful bunch of bush characters. It tells the story of what happens when they all collide.
Coleman, who co-wrote both Happy Feet and its sequel Happy Feet Two, wrote Stripey alongside Australian writer and comedian Steve Abbot (behind the popular radio and TV character The Sandman).
“What really got us into this story that we kept coming back to was this simple idea about what would happen if some of the newest people in Australia crossed paths with one of the very oldest creatures we have, which isn’t even supposed to exist anymore,” Coleman tells The Hollywood Reporter, adding that, while supposedly extinct (the last official one died...

Arclight Films’ Chasing Wonders has locked North American distribution with Gravitas on its coming of age film, Chasing Wonders directed by Paul Meins. A theatrical and on-demand release is scheduled for June 4. Arclight is handling global sales for the pic.
Set in the lush wine country landscapes of Australia and Spain, the heart-warming tale follows 12-year-old Savino, who, encouraged by his maternal grandfather to live a life of hope and possibility, takes off on the adventure of a lifetime to find the magical Emu Plains. His journey leads him to the heart of the human condition – learning to understand our parents’ past but not to be defined by it.
The pic stars Paz Vega, Oscar nominee Edward James Olmos, Quim Gutierrez, Carmen Maura, Goya award-winner Antonio de la Torre, Australia’s Jessica Marais, and making his feature film debut, Michael Crisafulli as Savino.
Australian award-winning screenwriter Judy Morris wrote the screenplay, which was shot over a five-year period.
Chasing Wonders made its World Premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival last year and has been selected for the Gold Coast Film Festival, where it will screen on April 18 and 22.
“Chasing Wonders is an uplifting story of familial love and loss and a powerful exploration of the path to understanding and acceptance. This heartwarming film with top international stars and spectacular landscapes is exactly what audiences yearn for. We are thrilled to have our longtime trusted partners at Gravitas Ventures bringing the film to North American audiences and are certain that their team will make this beautiful film shine bright,” said Arclight Films Chairman Gary Hamilton.
“With an ensemble that includes veteran screen icons alongside exciting new talent, the filmmakers craft an inspiring coming of age story on a canvas of breathtaking vistas across multiple continents. We look forward to North American audiences taking the journey,” said Tony Piantedosi, VP of Acquisitions at Gravitas Ventures.
Hianlo Films presents Chasing Wonders in association with the South Australian Film Corporation, a Met Film and Sla Films production. Anna Vincent (I Am Mother), Stewart Le Marechal (Swimming With Men), Anna Mohr-Pietsch (Swimming With Men), Hilton Nathanson, and Louise Nathanson are producers. Jonny Persey (The Mercy) and Timothy White are EPs.

The new feature, which is about to be presented at this year’s EFM, will star Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson in the lead roles. Pathé has announced that it will be presenting a new feature-length project, entitled The Great Escaper, at this year’s European Film Market (1-5 March – see the news). British helmer Oliver Parker, whose most recent credits include Swimming with Men (2018) and Dad’s Army (2016), is set to direct. The story of Parker’s new effort, penned by William “Billy” Ivory, is inspired by true events and is set in the summer of 2014. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in France, octogenarian Bernard Jordan (played by Michael Caine) made global headlines. He’d staged a “great escape” from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy, commemorating their fallen comrades. The bittersweet script is said to explore.

Stacy Martin (Nymphomaniac), Sharon Rooney (Dumbo), Hayley Squires and Aimee Lou Wood (Sex Education) have joined the cast of Benedict Cumberbatch and Claire Foy-fronted biopic Louis Wain.
The first look of the feature, which also stars Andrea Riseborough and Toby Jones, has also been revealed.
The quartet play Wain’s eccentric sisters, while Adeel Akhtar (The Big Sick), Julian Barratt (Mindhorn) and Asim Chaudhry (People Just Do Nothing) round out the cast.
Wain was an English artist who lived between 1860-1939 and is best known for his drawings, which consistently featured anthropomorphized large-eyed cats and kittens. Cumberbatch will play Wain, a brilliant man inspired by both his love of the world and the love of his life, Emily, who will be played by Foy. Wain was famous for his distinctive paintings of cats and was also an inspirational hero who defied obstacles throughout his life.
“I am thrilled by the prospect of playing the courageous, playful spirit that is Louis Wain and to be producing such a special film,” said Cumberbatch.

Exclusive: Shoot begins 10 August in London on movie biopic Louis Wain starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Claire Foy, Andrea Riseborough and Toby Jones.
Wain was an English artist who lived between 1860-1939 and is best known for his drawings, which consistently featured anthropomorphized large-eyed cats and kittens. In his later years he may have suffered from schizophrenia (although some specialists dispute this claim), which, according to some psychiatrists, can be seen in his work.
Directed by BAFTA-nominated, rising UK director Will Sharpe (Flowers) and written by Sharpe and Simon Stephenson, the film is being produced by Guy Heeley (Swimming With Men) and Adam Ackland (Patrick Melrose) with Ed Clarke and Leah Clarke. Behind the movie are StudioCanal, SunnyMarch, Shoebox, Film4 and Amazon Studios.
At the age of 23, Wain married his sisters’ governess, Emily Richardson (Foy), who was ten years his senior. The marriage was considered somewhat scandalous at the time due to the age difference.

Lupita Nyong’o in ‘Us’
Jordan Peele’s grisly horror movie Us easily won the Bo derby in Australia last weekend, outscoring Tim Burton’s live-action re-imagining of the Disney classic Dumbo.
That is not surprising in light of the Us results for both films and the under-whelming debuts worldwide of Burton’s $170 million production.
However Australian exhibitors expect Dumbo to fly during the school vacation and it may well surpass Us, given the usual trajectory of horror movies.
Ticket sales rallied last weekend, also boosted by the solid start of Justin Baldoni’s teenage romance Five Feet Apart. The top 20 titles generated $14.7 million, up 37 per cent on the previous weekend, according to Numero.
Released by Universal, Us bagged $3.8 million on 319 screens, eclipsing Peele’s debut film Get Out, which opened with $1.9 million plus $975,000 from advance screenings. Get Out ended up with $6.2 million so the follow-up starring Lupita Nyong’o,...

‘The Lego Movie 2’
The Australian box office slump continued last weekend despite respectable debuts for Warner Bros’ The Lego Movie 2 and Universal’s Fighting with My Family.
Icon’s British comedy-drama Swimming With Men sank while Madman Entertainment’s Destroyer looks like joining the list of Nicole Kidman films which get critical plaudits and play to niche audiences.
Bollywood action film Kesari had an impressive launch while Icon’s Hotel Mumbai held well in its second weekend, suggesting the impact of opening amid the Christchurch massacre is no longer a factor.
The top 20 titles generated $10.6 million last weekend, down 20 per cent on the previous frame, according to Numero.
Disney/Marvel’s Captain Marvel reigned again despite tumbling by 47 per cent in its third outing, scoring nearly $3.9 million. The sci-fi fantasy co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck advanced to $31.6 million.

We’ve been on many a fantastic trip here at HeyUGuys, and needless to say, heading over to China to attend the International Film Festival of Macau, was right up there with the best of them. As we landed in Hong Kong, before taking the ferry over to the Island populated by Casinos (it didn’t get the nickname ‘the Las Vegas of Asia’ for nothing) we had an inkling this would be a special week.
Of course we were there to work, so when we weren’t stuffing our faces with the local delicacy of egg tarts, or the ‘pork chop in a bun’ which is, unsurprisingly, just a pork chop in a bun, we were found in the Cultural Centre, indulging in some of the very best cinema from around the world, several of which are films you’ll expect to hear a lot more of come award’s season.

Animated family flicks are proving their worth ahead of the upcoming holiday rush, with “Ralph Breaks the Internet” and “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch” both making claims on the top spot with an estimated $15 million each.
Current estimates show Disney’s “Ralph” ahead by roughly $600,000. If estimates hold, it will mark the film’s third consecutive weekend at the top. The family feature, now in its third weekend, has totaled $128 million domestically with another $87 million overseas, while Universal’s “The Grinch,” currently in its fifth frame, has taken in $275 million worldwide.
Meanwhile, the third frame of MGM-New Line’s “Creed II” should slot into third with about $9 million while the two animated flicks battle it out. The Michael B. Jordan-starrer has taken in $88 million domestically and $15 million in international markets.

‘Swimming With Men’ Exclusive Clip: Synchronized Swimming Has Never Been So Cringeworthy & Hilarious
There have been plenty of films that tackle the very real issue of a mid-life crisis. Normally, those films feature men buying sports cars, getting a fake tan, and perhaps a younger significant other. However, in the new IFC Films release “Swimming with Men,” when Eric goes through his mid-life crisis, he decides the best way to tackle this time in his life is by doing something different — joining an all-male synchronized swimming group.

Initially keeping their personal lives in the locker, the ramshackle squad including Luke (Rupert Graves), Ted (Jim Carter), Kurt (Adeel Akhtar), Tom (Thomas Turgoose), Colin (Daniel Mays) and coach Susan (Charlotte Riley) slowly begin to reveal their inner lives, as well as their paunches. But can they get their routines, not to mention their lives, in sync as they embark on an unlikely journey to Milan to compete in the World Championship?

"Rule 1: no one talks about swim club." IFC Films has debuted an official trailer for a British comedy titled Swimming With Men, a film directed by veteran English filmmaker Oliver Parker. The film is about a man suffering a crippling mid-life crisis who finds new meaning in his life as part of an all-male, middle-aged, amateur synchronized swimming team. This is oddly the same setup as a French film titled Sink or Swim, pretty much the exact same thing but this one is British. The film stars Rob Brydon as Eric, with a full cast including Adeel Akhtar, Thomas Turgoose, Jim Carter, Daniel Mays, Rupert Graves, Charlotte Riley, Jane Horrocks, and Nathaniel Parker. This looks like the kind of comedy that only appeals to certain age groups with awkward humor. This isn't for me, but others might be into ...

Atrium TV is a drama commissioning club that has telcos and pay-tv platforms as members. They were in Cannes to run the rule over new projects and others already in development. Members include BT from the U.K., Televisa from Mexico, Orange from France, and Movistar+ from Spain. They co-fund scripted series and launch them domestically as original productions. Atrium is backed by distributor Drg, which then sells the shows outside of the territories in which they were commissioned.
Atrium TV CEO, Richard Halliwell, said Sunday that Michael Douglas-produced “Silo,” which was first shown to members in May, is moving forward with new scripts being written. Sundance Selects has acquired U .S. rights to Henry Barrial’s Uber-inspired “DriverX” starring Patrick Fabian (“Better Call Saul”) and Tanya Clarke (“Banshee”).
The movie stars Fabian as Leonard Moore, a 50-something stay-at-home dad in Los Angeles who is desperate to find a job and signs up to drive for the popular ride-share company DriverX, leading his marriage to fray at home. The film follows Leonard as he navigates L.A.’s late-night, Tinder-fueled party scene while adjusting to the new technology and the young millennials he drives around.
“The film was inspired by my own experiences as an Uber driver while waiting in vain for another movie to get green-lit,” said Barriel, who also wrote the script. “From the first moment where I was hired via text, without ever meeting or speaking to another human being, I felt something different was happening here that might be worth investigating in a film.

Two comedies this summer tackle midlife crises via synchronised swimming, but their cultural idiosyncrasies put clear blue water between them
This year, cinemagoers will have the opportunity to answer one of the most pressing questions of our time: who looks better in swimming trunks, Rob Brydon or Mathieu Amalric? First, you can have a gander at a nearly naked Brydon in Swimming With Men, in which his character overcomes a midlife crisis by joining an all-male synchronised swimming team. Then, if you pop to France in October, you can check out the Amalric physique in Le Grand Bain (Aka Sink or Swim), in which his character overcomes a midlife crisis by, er, joining an all-male synchronised swimming team.
Yes, just as we have had two simultaneous disaster movies about volcanoes (Volcano and Dante’s Peak) and two simultaneous sci-fi blockbusters about asteroids (Armageddon and Deep Impact), we now have two...

Tom Hardy played the supportive husband on Wednesday when he accompanied his wife, Charlotte Riley, to the premiere of her new movie, Swimming With Men. The couple, who're definitely one of our favorite celeb duos, cuddled up on the blue carpet at the event, posing for pictures and sharing a few loving looks with each other, and they also spent some time signing autographs for a few lucky fans. Charlotte is one of very few women in the cast of the movie (a British comedy about a male synchronized swimming team), but she looked right at home as she left Tom for a moment to pull some shapes with her costars. See all the photos ahead.

The Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature Film at the 72nd Edinburgh International Film Festival has gone to Matt Palmer’s debut feature Calibre.
Dunkir’s Jack Lowden and The Survivalist star Martin McCann play two lifelong friends who get more than they bargained for when they head up to an isolated Scottish Highlands village for a weekend hunting trip. Netflix previously picked up world rights to the film, which had its world premiere in Edinburgh.
The winner was chosen by the Michael Powell Jury comprised of Ana Ularu, Jason Connery and Iain de Caestecker. The jury said, “Beautifully shot, technically accomplished, with a fantastic ensemble performance, director and screenwriter Matt Palmer pitches the tension and emotional journey flawlessly. We are fully invested in the characters and their dilemmas as the choices they make lead to a shattering conclusion.”
