James Purefoy (“King Randor”) and Charlotte Riley (“Queen Marlena”) have been cast in the upcoming live-action feature film “Masters of the Universe,” based on the iconic Mattel franchise, Amazon MGM and Mattel announced on Tuesday.

Both will star alongside the already announced Nicholas Galitzine (“He-Man”), Camila Mendes (“Teela”), Morena Baccarin (“The Sorceress”), Alison Brie (“Evil-Lyn”), Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (“Malcolm/Fisto”), Jared Leto (“Skeletor”), Idris Elba (“Duncan/Man-at-Arms”), Sam C. Wilson (“Trap Jaw”), Hafthor Bjornsson (“Goat Man”) and Kojo Attah (“Tri-Klops”).

Travis Knight is directing the film from a screenplay by Chris Butler. Plot details are being kept under wraps for the film, which will be released exclusively in theaters worldwide on June 5, 2026. The movie will be produced by Escape Artists and Mattel Films.

Warren Coleman, who co-directed George Miller’s 2006 animated Oscar-winning smash hit Happy Feet, is set to direct live-action family adventure feature Stripey.

The film — currently in development — follows a single-parent family of refugees from Kashmir, a long-thought-extinct Tasmanian tiger and a colorful bunch of bush characters. It tells the story of what happens when they all collide.

Coleman, who co-wrote both Happy Feet and its sequel Happy Feet Two, wrote Stripey alongside Australian writer and comedian Steve Abbot (behind the popular radio and TV character The Sandman).

Pathé has announced that it will be presenting a new feature-length project, entitled The Great Escaper, at this year’s European Film Market (1-5 March – see the news). British helmer Oliver Parker, whose most recent credits include Swimming with Men (2018) and Dad’s Army (2016), is set to direct. The story of Parker’s new effort, penned by William “Billy” Ivory, is inspired by true events and is set in the summer of 2014. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in France, octogenarian Bernard Jordan (played by Michael Caine) made global headlines. He’d staged a “great escape” from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy, commemorating their fallen comrades. The bittersweet script is said to explore.

Oliver Parker to direct drama based on true events

Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson are to star in upcoming drama The Great Escaper, which Pathe will introduce at the virtual European Film Market (EFM) next month.

Oliver Parker, who most recently directed Swimming With Men and a reboot of classic comedy series Dad’s Army, will direct the feature from a script by William Ivory, whose credits include Made In Dagenham. Filming is set to begin in June.

Jordan Peele’s grisly horror movie Us easily won the Bo derby in Australia last weekend, outscoring Tim Burton’s live-action re-imagining of the Disney classic Dumbo.

That is not surprising in light of the Us results for both films and the under-whelming debuts worldwide of Burton’s $170 million production.

However Australian exhibitors expect Dumbo to fly during the school vacation and it may well surpass Us, given the usual trajectory of horror movies.

Ticket sales rallied last weekend, also boosted by the solid start of Justin Baldoni’s teenage romance Five Feet Apart. The top 20 titles generated $14.7 million, up 37 per cent on the previous weekend, according to Numero.

Munich-based Alamode has taken German and Austrian rights to Lone Scherfig’s “The Kindness of Strangers,” ahead of the picture’s opening-night gala screening at the Berlin Film Festival next month.

Alamode acquired the rights from London-based HanWay Films, which is handling worldwide sales. Entertainment One is distributing the film in Canada and Sf Studios in Scandinavia.

Danish director Scherfig’s ensemble drama is set in a Russian restaurant in New York and is billed as “a tale about hope, forgiveness and love.” The film stars Zoe Kazan, Andrea Riseborough, Tahar Rahim, Caleb Landry Jones, Jay Baruchel, and Bill Nighy.

The actor, 41, and his wife, 37-year-old actress Charlotte Riley, recently welcomed a new baby, People has learned.

It’s the second child for Hardy and Riley, who also share a 3-year-old child born in October 2015. The private couple hasn’t confirmed the names of their little ones.

Hardy also has a son named Louis Thomas, 10, from a previous relationship.

As we landed in Hong Kong, before taking the ferry over to the Island populated by Casinos (it didn’t get the nickname ‘the Las Vegas of Asia’ for nothing) we had an inkling this would be a special week.

Of course we were there to work, so when we weren’t stuffing our faces with the local delicacy of egg tarts, or the ‘pork chop in a bun’ which is, unsurprisingly, just a pork chop in a bun, we were found in the Cultural Centre, indulging in some of the very best cinema from around the world, several of which are films you’ll expect to hear a lot more of come award’s season.

Animated family flicks are proving their worth ahead of the upcoming holiday rush, with “Ralph Breaks the Internet” and “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch” both making claims on the top spot with an estimated $15 million each.

Current estimates show Disney’s “Ralph” ahead by roughly $600,000. If estimates hold, it will mark the film’s third consecutive weekend at the top. The family feature, now in its third weekend, has totaled $128 million domestically with another $87 million overseas, while Universal’s “The Grinch,” currently in its fifth frame, has taken in $275 million worldwide.

Meanwhile, the third frame of MGM-New Line’s “Creed II” should slot into third with about $9 million while the two animated flicks battle it out. The Michael B. Jordan-starrer has taken in $88 million domestically and $15 million in international markets.

There have been plenty of films that tackle the very real issue of a mid-life crisis. Normally, those films feature men buying sports cars, getting a fake tan, and perhaps a younger significant other. However, in the new IFC Films release “Swimming with Men,” when Eric goes through his mid-life crisis, he decides the best way to tackle this time in his life is by doing something different — joining an all-male synchronized swimming group.

Sink Or Swim Photo: Mika Cotellon The French Film Festival - which runs from November 7 to December 16 at cinemas across the country - has announced its line-up.

The festival, which has announced will screen films from across the Francophone world, will feature the latest films from established names - including Jean-Luc Godard's The Image Book, Jean Becker's The Red Collar and Christophe Honoré's Sorry Angel - as well as new directors. The up-and-comers in the Discovery Horizons section include Marie Monge’s thriller Treat Me Like Fire, Hubert Charuel’s Bloody Milk and Dany, which is the directorial debut of actor François Damiens.

Other films screening include Gilles Lelouche's crowdpleaser Sink Or Swim - based on the same real-life story as UK production Swimming With Men - and Stéphane Brizé's At War, starring Vincent Lindon.

Joseph Fiennes was in Cannes, Sunday, to talk to potential partners about “Cyrano,” his “Cyrano de Bergerac” series project for Atrium TV.

Atrium TV is a drama commissioning club that has telcos and pay-tv platforms as members. They were in Cannes to run the rule over new projects and others already in development. Members include BT from the U.K., Televisa from Mexico, Orange from France, and Movistar+ from Spain. They co-fund scripted series and launch them domestically as original productions. Atrium is backed by distributor Drg, which then sells the shows outside of the territories in which they were commissioned.

Atrium TV CEO, Richard Halliwell, said Sunday that Michael Douglas-produced “Silo,” which was first shown to members in May, is moving forward with new scripts being written. The futuristic drama is set in San Francisco. Douglas will produce with Peter Horton (“Grey’s Anatomy”), who writes alongside Raelle Tucker (“Jessica Jones”).

Sundance Selects has acquired U .S. rights to Henry Barrial’s Uber-inspired “DriverX” starring Patrick Fabian (“Better Call Saul”) and Tanya Clarke (“Banshee”).

The movie stars Fabian as Leonard Moore, a 50-something stay-at-home dad in Los Angeles who is desperate to find a job and signs up to drive for the popular ride-share company DriverX, leading his marriage to fray at home. The film follows Leonard as he navigates L.A.’s late-night, Tinder-fueled party scene while adjusting to the new technology and the young millennials he drives around.

“The film was inspired by my own experiences as an Uber driver while waiting in vain for another movie to get green-lit,” said Barriel, who also wrote the script. “From the first moment where I was hired via text, without ever meeting or speaking to another human being, I felt something different was happening here that might be worth investigating in a film.

Finally confirmed as CEO of the Dendy Icon group, Sharon Strickland is keen to continue the company’s growth in exhibition and distribution.

Ticket sales at the 43-screen Dendy circuit are up 26 per cent this year after the opening of the 10-screen Coorparoo cinema in Brisbane last December and the expansion of the Dendy Canberra location from 9 to 15 screens in June 2017.

The Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature Film at the 72nd Edinburgh International Film Festival has gone to Matt Palmer’s debut feature Calibre.

Dunkir’s Jack Lowden and The Survivalist star Martin McCann play two lifelong friends who get more than they bargained for when they head up to an isolated Scottish Highlands village for a weekend hunting trip. Netflix previously picked up world rights to the film, which had its world premiere in Edinburgh.

The winner was chosen by the Michael Powell Jury comprised of Ana Ularu, Jason Connery and Iain de Caestecker. The jury said, “Beautifully shot, technically accomplished, with a fantastic ensemble performance, director and screenwriter Matt Palmer pitches the tension and emotional journey flawlessly. We are fully invested in the characters and their dilemmas as the choices they make lead to a shattering conclusion.”
