"The gang" on "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" are five of the most extreme, ridiculous, poorly behaved people in television history. While the show is so much more than just a show about terrible people, it is admittedly populated by some pretty awful human beings. Charlie (Charlie Day), Mac (Rob McElhenney), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Sweet Dee (Kaitlin Olson), and Frank (Danny DeVito) are pretty entertaining all on their own, but they also have to interact with other people, which means expanding the "Always Sunny" world with more weird and wild characters. There are dozens of recurring characters that appear throughout the show's 16 seasons, but some of them have made their mark more than others, either as willing accomplices in the gang's schemes or as their unfortunate targets.
There aren't really many decent people who engage with the gang for long without being broken or simply bailing on the situation, so...

As the longest-running live-action American sitcom, with 15 seasons filmed and another four ordered at the time of writing, "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" has seen its share of ups and downs. While every season has at least one stand-out episode, the show tends to go in waves: It takes some big swings, finds a sweet spot, and then struggles somewhat before hitting another crest.
Part of what makes the series so satisfying is that, unlike the long-running comedies that begin relying on familiar jokes that grew stale years ago, the "Always Sunny" crew continues to challenge themselves and grow. While not every idea hits, it's impressive that the show continually works to sharpen its satirical voice and expand from its shock-comedy roots. With so much more on the way, now's a great time to look back at the peaks and valleys so far.

As befitting its status as one of the world’s biggest companies, every now and then Amazon likes to take a big swing with its Prime Video originals. With its list of new releases for April 2023, the streamer is taking one of its biggest swings yet.
Though it’s not quite as vast or expensive as fellow Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Citadel (premiering April 28) is a massive, massive undertaking. Starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, this spy series is described as “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series.” This means that the Russo Brothers-produced project will eventually feature several spinoffs in multiple countries and languages around the world. Neat-o!

Created by Georgaris and Fox, written by Georgaris and to be directed by Richard Shepard, Blank Slate draws some parallels to Davis Entertainment’s long-running NBC series The Blacklist. In Blank Slate, Special Agent Alexander McCoy (Passmore) is a legend in law enforcement, the agent we all hope is out there, the agent we’d all like to be. The only issue is — he doesn’t actually exist. He’s a ghost, a phantom. So what happens when a man claiming to be Alexander McCoy walks through the door with all of his skills and knowledge but with an agenda nobody will see coming?
Mathis will play Dr. Sylvia Matthews, the team’s forensic psychologist.

Linoleum is certainly something of a curiosity as it strives to use a simple premise to explore, however subtly, themes of loss, identity, and fulfilling a dream of a suburban husband and father who finds a space age satellite drop out of the sky and into his backyard fueling his lost ambition of becoming an astronaut and building a homemade rocket to do just that.
It also provides though a chance for comedian Jim Gaffigan, quickly becoming a prince, if not a king, of the indies to play dual roles and show a little more range than he normally has in past films like another previous SXSW entry, Being Frank. This one had its World Premiere at SXSW tonight in the narrative competition and is like many other films here hopeful for acquisition, most likely a small distributor at best with VOD plans, or even an Amazon which has shown...

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 7 Episode 11
With everything that’s happening right now with the coronavirus pandemic, it’s nice to know that some traditions are still being observed. In the real world, we may not be able to celebrate Passover or Easter in a normal fashion. However, in the fictional version of Brooklyn on NBC’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine, there’s no virus putting the brakes on the annual heist. Well, ok, there are multiple breaks put on the Halloween Heist during “Valloweaster” but that’s all by crafty design.
Being our seventh installment of the heist, the whole endeavor runs the risk of growing stale, so new elements must be thrown in to keep things fresh. This year, within the show, that fresh element is random, handcuffed partners, while the writers take advantage of the season’s schedule no longer lining up with Halloween by...

Always Sunny Season 14 Episode 6
I know it’s tiring hearing critics and industry types talk about just how impressive it is that the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia gang hasn’t run out of steam 14 seasons into their loud, abrasive comedy series, especially given how supposedly difficult this brand of comedy is to pull off in 2019, but everyone better get used to it. Not only has FX already said that, if the creative team is on board, the show could run to an astounding 16th season, but as long as cast and crew keep pumping out episodes like “The Janitor Always Mops Twice,” you’ll keep hearing us singing Sunny’s praises.

“Dee Day” is a pretty strange episode of television, even by “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s” warped standards. There’s a racist play featuring brown face, an involuntary make-out scene between two platonic friends, an ongoing vomit bit, a mystery lurking in the background about a secret plan, and it’s all wrapped in a simple sitcom premise: It’s Dee Day, which means everyone as to do what Dee (Kaitlin Olson) says, no matter how uncomfortable, unwanted, or weird.
Written by Megan Ganz (who last penned one of “Sunny’s” best recent episodes), “Dee Day” utilizes many of the series’ comedy go-to’s: satire, physical humor, shocking behavior, random running gags, and an utter lack of shame from anyone involved. But it’s also really, really weird, and that in itself has been a key element to the FX sitcom’s longevity. Without episodes like “Dee Day,...

Chicago – Miranda Bailey has a proven track record as a film producer of big title independent films, and has worked as a writer and actor. She has now conquered the creative side, as she makes her debut as a feature film director with “Being Frank.” The film features comedian Jim Gaffigan in the title role, and also features Anna Gunn, Samantha Mathis and Alex Karpovsky.
“Being Frank” has Jim G. as a father, which he also famously is in real life, but this Dad has a twist. Somehow, someway Frank has managed to maintain two families, and take them to maturation. This bigamist jig is slowly coming apart as the film begins, when Phillip (Logan Miller), the son of the Mom portrayed by Anna Gunn, begins to suspect that something is amiss. Meanwhile, in Frank’s second family (where the Mom is played by Samantha Mathis), his daughter Allison (Danielle Campbell...

Chicago – Comedian Jim Gaffigan is one of the funniest persons on earth, basically by being himself (Score!). In the last five years, he has been immersing himself into the waters of character acting in the movies, doing some serious supporting roles in films like “Chuck” and “Chappaquiddick.”
Lately, he has been on an indie film streak, with lead roles this year in “Light from Light” – which closed this year’s Chicago Critics Festival – and the recently released “Being Frank,” in which he portrays the title character.

Hot off the Cannes Film Festival, Focus Features is wasting little time to get Jim Jarmusch’s latest The Dead Don’t Die in theaters this weekend. The comedy-thriller which features Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton, Chloë Sevigny, Steve Buscemi, Danny Glover, Iggy Pop and more will be in about six hundred theaters starting Friday. The Dead Don’t Die is one of a fairly sizable crowd of Specialty newcomers headed to theaters. Sienna Miller stars in American Woman from Roadside Attractions/Vertical Entertainment. Directed by Jake Scott, the drama will also have a good number of runs in its first frame in about 117 locations. Jim Gaffigan, meanwhile, stars in comedy, Being Frank, by director Miranda Bailey in a much more traditional three locations in New York and L.A. its first weekend via The Film Arcade. And nearly three decades after its first release, the seminal documentary Paris Is Burning...

“Being Frank” isn’t very amusing, which normally would be the most damning thing one might say about an ostensible comedy. But that really isn’t the worst thing about it. There is something ineffably creepy about this contrived and mirthless farce about a demanding family man whose rebellious son discovers his dad has secretly maintained a second family in a nearby town for some 18 years. It’s a premise that could have been played for heavy drama, or even as a horror movie. In this case, however, director Miranda Bailey and writer Glen Lakin strain mightily for laughs without much success, and wind up treating the son’s discovery of his father’s deception, and their subsequent efforts to sustain it, as a bonding experience for them.

Miranda Bailey’s narrative directorial debut “Being Frank” is a comedy about male hypocrisy set in 1992 that dives into many intriguing ideas and issues and gives us a lot to consider. This is commendable — given that many commercial comedies give us nothing to consider at all — but there is a tug-of-war here between her attempt to explore her characters in a very serious way with a consistent emotional basis and the demands of the material as written by Glen Lakin, which is clearly meant to be played as farce most of the time, particularly towards the end.
The first moments of “Being Frank” show high school senior Philip (Logan Miller) doing a practice job interview with his father Frank (Jim Gaffigan), and the way the shots are composed makes us feel Frank’s bullying control over his son; the effect is oppressive and even alienating at first, but to a point.

Over the last few years, the likes of “Swiss Army Man,” “Time Out of Mind,” and “The Diary of a Teenage Girl” have established Miranda Bailey as one of the boldest and most forward-thinking producers in contemporary indie cinema. The films that she’s helped shepherd into the world run the gamut from deranged fart comedies to unflinching social dramas, but all of them are bound together by a radical sense of empathy and a refusal to judge their characters (that latter treat being especially appreciated at a time when many viewers approach movies as though everyone in them were on trial).
A sweet if styleless throwback that tries to milk a few sad laughs from the story of a teenager who discovers that his dad is parenting a second family on the side, Bailey’s narrative feature debut may not hold a candle to the work that she’s produced for other directors,...

Producer Miranda Bailey has dropped out of the drama “Time Capsule,” which is set to shoot in Georgia next month, over the state’s recently passed anti-abortion law, her spokesperson told TheWrap.
Bailey and her company Cold Iron Pictures were the only producers credited on the film that was written by Erwann Marshall and Chad Fifer. “Deadpool” star Brianna Hildebrand and “One Day at a Time” actor Todd Grinnell are attached to the project. But with Bailey’s walkout, the future of the production is in limbo.
Bailey’s credits include “Being Frank,” “Untitled Amazing Johnathan Documentary,” “Don’t Think Twice” and “Swiss Army Man.”

Seventeen-year old Philip (Miller) longs to leave his small town for music school in The Big Apple. His dreams are dashed when his overbearing father, Frank (Gaffigan) forbids it. "There are two sides to every story." "So it seems..." The Film Arcade has debuted the official trailer for an indie comedy titled Being Frank, which premiered at the SXSW Film Festival last year and also played at the Los Angeles Film Festival. Being Frank is the narrative feature directorial debut of actress / filmmaker / producer Miranda Bailey, and is about a teenager from a small town. Jim Gaffigan plays Frank, a "normal father" whose family life is turned upside down when his son discovers he has another family. Gaffigan seems hilarious in this role, though the whole situation seems so awkward I'm not sure what to make of it or how to deal with it. Which is basically what the film is about. Also starring Logan Miller, Anna Gunn, Samantha Mathis, Alex Karpovsky, Danielle Campbell, and Gage Polchlopek. Might be a fun one. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Miranda Bailey's Being Frank,...

Nantucket, Mass. — The #MeToo moment and the push for gender parity in Hollywood has opened doors for women artists in the film and TV business in the past year, but there are concerns that the appetite for female-led stories could be a “worryingly trendy conversation.” That’s how showrunner Sera Gamble put during a panel session Saturday at the Nantucket Film Festival that focused on the status of women filmmakers, actors and writers.

Juried prizes were presented tonight at the 25th annual Swsw Film Festival. Jim Gaffigan, in Austin to represent the Miranda Bailey-directed ensemble comedy “You Can Choose Your Family,” presided as host. The venue was the Paramount Theatre, a 103-year-old landmark just blocks from the Texas Capitol.
SXSW will continue screening films through Saturday, when most of the festival’s audience awards recipients will be announced. The exception is for the headlining films, such as “A Quiet Place,” “Blockers,” and “Ready Player One” — those verdicts follows on March 19.
This year’s line-up comprised 256 total features and shorts, culled from 8,183 submissions. Best narrative feature “Thunder Road” was adapted from the namesake, one-take short that won a Grand Jury award at Sundance in 2016.
