Series as long-running as Pokémon are bound to be riddled with mysteries, and one of the biggest has huge implications for Ash & Pikachu's relationship. In 2017, Pokémon The Movie: I Choose You! climaxed with Ash desperately asking Pikachu why he wouldn't return to his pokéball. Audiences were stunned when he received an answer in plain English. Since then, the reality of the scene has been the subject of heated debate.
The general consensus is that Pikachu's confession was the result of some dream state that Ash slipped into. But, while he was certainly weakened and appeared to be on the edge of blacking out, Ash didn't appear disoriented enough to hallucinate about talking animals. He was cognizant enough to protect Pikachu as best he could in his condition. It seems more likely that, in reality, Ash could always understand Pokémon--this was just the first time the audience could, as well.
