An obstacle was that Sorrentino's usual Italian co-financier Medusa Film, which is controlled by Berlusconi, was not willing to participate in this production.
The film came out in theaters in two acts: the first act was released on 24 April 2018, while the second part came out on 10 May 2018. On 7 August 2018, the release of a new 145-minutes was announced for 13 September 2018. The new cut was made to allow the movie to run for the 91st Academy Awards.
The title Loro is Italian for "them", but also a word play on l'oro, meaning "the gold".
Toni Servillo meets Paolo Sorrentino for the fifth time in his career after the director's first film L'uomo in più (2001), The Consequences of Love (2003), Il Divo (2008), winner of the Jury Prize in Cannes and La Grande Bellezza, Oscar for the best foreign film.
After having played the politician Giulio Andreotti in Il Divo, Toni Servillo metamorphoses again to slip into the skin of a great figure of Italian politics, Silvio Berlusconi, in Silvio and the others.
