YouTube is on a multiyear crusade against ad blockers. In an effort to stop people from using browser plugins to get rid of ads, it’s escalated from sending “Hey, stop using those” nudges to completely shutting off their ability to see videos unless and until they disabled the blockers. And, most recently, we’ve seen reports that Chrome (the browser owned by YouTube parent Google) has apparently stopped supporting uBlock Origin, one of the most popular ad blockers on the market.
So what’s the deal? Well, YouTube relies on the ~$40 billion of ad revenue it earns each year. Creators get paid because YouTube gives them a portion of the revenue from ads run on their videos. We get it. But, at the same time, YouTube has been steadily increasing the amount of advertising across its platform, including 60-second unskippable ads and ads that pop up when you pause a video.

With The Challenge: Battle of the Eras season concluded on MTV, Johnny Bananas appears to have found a new side hustle, but not all fans are buying it.
The seven-time MTV champion just finished Season 40, finishing third place amongst the men, as he watched castmate Jordan Wiseley capture another title.
Just recently, Bananas claimed that the unique twist, known as the Karma Vote, was added to the season to prevent him from achieving his eighth win.
He called it the “Envy Vote” and accused other castmates of being jealous and giving him lower scores to prevent him from finishing in first place.
In the past several years, he has expanded his reality TV resume by appearing on other shows, including Peacock’s The Traitors and E!’s House of Villains.
However, within the past few days, he teased that he had something big coming to social media, and he is...

Google Maps said that it will rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America on its maps app, saying that the change will take place when it has been updated in official government sources.
Google also will change the name of Denali, the tallest mountain in North America, back to Mount McKinley.
In his first day in office, Donald Trump signed an executive order mandating the name change.
Google said that when the Geographic Names Information System is updated, “we will update Google Maps in the U.S. quickly to show Mount McKinley and Gulf of America.”
“Also longstanding practice: When official names vary between countries, Maps users see their official local name. Everyone in the rest of the world sees both names. That applies here too.”

Cable: Love and Chrome #1 – written by David Pepose, with art by Mike Henderson – has introduced a mysterious new enemy for the time-hopping hero, a masked-figure known as "Cicada," who has a vendetta against Cable that has lasted centuries.
While in the future fighting an Asgardian-worshipping cult, Cable is attacked by the new masked villain, who calls him a hypocrite. Cicada is just as strong as Cable, and also has the ability to morph their arms into tentacles. Even stranger, however, is...

Google’s Search product is displayed on a tablet computer.
LinkedIn featured the DOJ/Google story at the top of their news stack. As usual, they made like Bruce Springsteen and pulled a Courtney Cox of their own on their big stage to opine on the news.
Unlike The Boss, Augustus Christensen isn’t an unknown. LinkedIn has ‘queathed unto him a Top Economics Voice badge. Here are Christensen’s opening bullets on the Google story:
Google controls 90 percent of searches and 65 percent of web browsing (80 percent when considering its Blink engine), Chrome also fuels Google’s ad empire, tracking your searches, sites you visit, and even ‘Incognito mode’ activity. That data drives its unmatched ad targeting, leaving competitors in the dust.
Like Courtney, Christensen is dancing in the dark.

Shares of mighty Alphabet are down about 7% today after the U.S. Department of Justice said it should sell its Chrome web browser among other remedies after the tech giant lost a landmark antitrust case last summer.
Government lawyers said in a filing that splitting Google’s dominant search engine from Chrome, which controls about two-thirds of the browser market, as well as from its Android operating system, is necessary to ensure a competitive Internet.
The filing comes after U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta in San Francisco ruled in August that Google had violated antitrust laws “by maintaining its monopoly” on product markets including search. “After having carefully considered the witness testimony and evidence, the court reaches the following conclusion: Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” Mehta wrote. “It has violated Section 2 of the Sherman Act.”

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty reached a new level of immersive gaming for me. As it was my first foray into the title since its disastrous launch in December of 2020, I was one of the rare people who got to experience the game for the first time in a much upgraded and enhanced state. From the first ride with Dex Deshawn to the Cyberpsycho-infested streets of Dogtown, Cdpr has done a stand-up job at creating what feels like a living, breathing world.
In my mind, there's one distinct sign that an open-world RPG is a good game, and that's how much I want to do the side missions. For this title, I spent so much time investigating random side missions, and after spending so much time building and customizing my V, I felt too invested in the world to leave random missions behind. With this all said, there's one aspect of...

For the past two decades, modern gaming has been dominated by a few platforms: PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and PC. With the four platforms in a competitive gridlock over the years, it was difficult for a new player to break in on equal footing or innovate. The Nintendo Switch successfully blurred the lines between console and handheld, and Xbox Game Pass revolutionized the gaming subscription service, with PlayStation following suit with a revamped PlayStation Plus. But even for massive tech companies like Amazon or Google, the gaming market seemed impenetrable despite their deep pockets.

YouTube viewers are about to encounter more product links within videos.
The platform has announced an expanded partnership with Shopify, the ecommerce brand that powers thousands of creator storefronts. The souped-up integration will let all U.S.-based Shopify Plus and Advanced merchants sign up for the YouTube Shopping affiliate program.
The enhanced agreement will open the door for any Shopify-partnered brand that wishes to sell its products directly on YouTube. The Shopify integration initially launched in 2022, just as YouTube was laying the groundwork for its in-feed shopping mall.
Now, that partnership is getting bigger. In a blog post, YouTube claimed that creators will gain access to “thousands of new brands,” which they will be able to tag in their videos. The platform identified Popflex, the activewear brand led by YouTube fitness guru Cassey Ho, as one of those newcomers.

Why Do the Warboys Spray Their Mouths in Mad Max: Fury Road? - Main Image
With Furiosa coming to theaters soon, it’s a great time to look back at the previous Mad Max film, especially as there are still many mysteries about that film’s characters and world. One such mystery is why the warboys spray their mouths during the various Mad Max: Fury Road chase sequences.
As Fury Road is not an exposition-heavy movie, a lot of its world-building is done visually, meaning the chrome-spraying of the warboys isn’t exactly explained.
Based on what we can glean from the film though, the color of the spray may hold the key to understanding this ritual.
Spoiler Warning: This article includes spoilers for Mad Max: Fury Road, so proceed with caution.

A consumer privacy lawsuit seeking at least $5 billion in damages over allegations Google tracked users who thought they were browsing the internet privately has been settled. No terms have been disclosed.
The”incognito” mode on Google’s Chrome browser still followed users, as emails revealed during the trial proved. The data was used to sell ads.
The judge in the case confirmed a preliminary agreement to settle the class action lawsuit, originally filed in 2020.
Lawyers were seeking at least $5,000 for each member of the class that had been tracked by the firm’s Google Analytics or Ad Manager services while not logged into their Google account.
The settlement came just weeks after Google was refused a request that the case be decided by a judge. A California jury trial was set to begin next year.

As Google celebrates its 25th birthday this month, its CEO Sundar Pichai has reminisced about how technology has changed the way we communicate, create and innovate. Celebrating Google’s rich history of events (the company will officially celebrate its 25th birthday later this month), Pichai said it’s time for some gratitude, and a moment to reflect.
“Years ago, when I was studying in the US, my dad — who was back in India — got his first email address. I was really excited to have a faster (and cheaper) way to communicate with him, so I sent a message.
“And then I waited…and waited. It was two full days before I got this reply Dear Mr. Pichai, email received. All is well,” he wrote late on Tuesday.
Fast forward to a few months ago.
“I was with my teenage son. He saw something interesting, took some quick pictures and shared them with his friends.

San Francisco, Sep 3 (Ians) Tech giant Google, which turns 25 on Monday, has come a long way from being born as a search engine in the garage of Susan Wojcicki — the future boss of YouTube — in a new tech landscape of generative AI, chatbots and social media.
Google was founded on September 4, 1998, by American computer scientists Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were PhD students at Stanford University in California.
The company — now part of the parent group called Alphabet and run by Indian-origin Sundar Pichai — has diversified into several tech streams and launched several products.
The company rapidly grew to offer a multitude of products and services beyond Google Search, many of which hold dominant market positions like Gmail, Google Maps, Google Cloud, Chrome, YouTube, Workspace, Android operating system, cloud storage Drive, Google Translate), video chat app Meet, Pixel smartphones, Google Assistant, Bard AI and more

San Francisco, Aug 16 (Ians) Google’s AI-powered Search Generative Experience (Sge) is getting a major new feature, which will summarise articles for users while reading on the web.
Currently, the feature — “Sge while browsing” is in the experiment phase.
“When you’re trying to understand the ins and outs of a new topic, you often need to digest long or complex web pages, and it’s not always easy to hone in on specific details. So starting today, we’re launching an early experiment in Search Labs called “Sge while browsing”, available in the Google app on Android and iOS, and coming to Chrome on desktop in the days ahead,” Google said in a blogpost on Tuesday.

San Francisco, Aug 16 (Ians) X, formerly known as Twitter, has limited traffic to certain websites disliked by its owner, Elon Musk, by slowing down the speed of accessing links.
The websites included The New York Times, Instagram, Bluesky, Threads, Substack, among others, reports TechCrunch, citing sources.
On Tuesday, the platform seemed to be correcting this delayed access to websites.
There was a five-second delay in the web pages loading after clicking on links to these websites on X.
In the past, Musk had publicly attacked each of these websites.
Musk and X were potentially taking away traffic and ad revenue from these companies, by delaying traffic to the websites.
Users can become impatient when content doesn’t load within a second or two, which can have an impact on the traffic to a website.

San Francisco, July 6 (Ians) Google has released the monthly security updates for the Android operating system, which come with fixes for 46 vulnerabilities, along with the fix for three actively exploited bugs.
“There are indications that the following (vulnerabilities) may be under limited, targeted exploitation — Cve-2023-26083, Cve-2021-29256, and Cve-2023-2136,” reads Android Security Bulletin.
According to BleepingComputer, Cve-2023-26083 is a medium-severity memory leak flaw in the Arm Mali Gpu driver for Bifrost, Avalon, and Valhall chips that was exploited in a December 2022 exploit chain that delivered spyware to Samsung devices.
Cve-2021-29256 is a critical (Cvss v3.1: 8.8) unprivileged information disclosure and root privilege escalation vulnerability that affects specific versions of the Bifrost and Midgard Arm Mali Gpu kernel drivers.
The third vulnerability, Cve-2023-2136, is a critical-severity one with a score of 9.6 out of 10 as it is an integer overflow bug in Skia, Google’s open-source multi-platform...

Receiptify is a quick and easy-to-share listening history receipt that lists the top tracks during set time periods, but only some features will work properly with an Apple Music subscription. One of the benefits of using a streaming service is viewing which songs are listened to most often, and visualizing the changes in a user's music tastes. An easy way to view the changes are through end-of-year recaps, like Apple Music Replay and Spotify Wrapped. However, it might be more beneficial to see these changes over smaller time periods — and more often. That's where third party websites come into the picture. Receiptify can create a receipt of a user's listening habits that can be quickly shared and be viewed at any time.
To create a receipt-style record of a user's music listening history, navigate to the Receiptify website on a smartphone. The homepage will show three login options for Receiptify: Spotify,...

The company has not released details about the exploit and how it was used in attacks, instead focusing on the severity and type of flaw.
“Access to bug details and links may be kept restricted until a majority of users are updated with a fix. We will also retain restrictions if the bug exists in a third-party library that other projects similarly depend on, but haven’t yet fixed,” the company said.
According to BleepingComputer, Cve-2023-3079 is a high-severity vulnerability discovered on June 1, 2023, by Google researcher Clement Lecigne. It is a type confusion in V8, Chrome’s JavaScript engine tasked with executing code within the browser.

Google Maps shows real-time traffic, making it easy to check for potential delays. The live traffic data incorporates anonymous information about the location and speed of vehicles, and then uses that information to display how busy traffic conditions are in real-time. To do this, Google Maps uses a color-code traffic map. Each street is denoted in either green, orange, or red to indicate various levels of traffic. Green indicates reasonably clear roads, orange signifies medium traffic, and red indicates highly congested streets.
Google Maps allows users to view live traffic data on both the Android and iOS apps. To see this, open up the Google Maps app and tap on the layers icon that looks like a stack of squares in the top-right corner of the app. A slide-out menu will pop out from the bottom of the phone's screen. Like other recent iPhone models, the iPhone 14 doesn't have a physical Home button, meaning closing apps works slightly differently than on older iPhones. With the Home button, users could just press to go back to the Home screen, while double-tapping brought up multitasking screen, from where users could force close apps. However, that is no longer possible on newer iPhones. Still, closing an app is fairly easy on the iPhone 14, with many users even arguing that the process is actually more intuitive than the old method.
On all four iPhone 14 devices, users can use gesture navigation to get back to the Home screen from any app. The same feature is also used to access the App Switcher, from where users can close any app running in the background. To get out of an app and go back to the Home screen, swipe up from the bottom edge of the device.

San Francisco, April 27 (Ians) In an effort to protect users from cyberattacks, Google has blocked the notorious CryptBot malware, which the company claims have stolen data from hundreds of thousands of Chrome browser users in the past year.
According to the company, CryptBot is a type of malware often referred to as an ‘infostealer’ because it is designed to identify and steal sensitive information from victims’ computers such as authentication credentials, social media account logins, cryptocurrency wallets, and more.
CryptBot then sends the stolen data to be harvested and eventually sold to bad actors to use in data breach campaigns.
Moreover, Google stated that the malware was spread through maliciously modified apps such as Google Chrome and Google Earth Pro. The malware has infected approximately 6,70,000 computers this past year and targeted users of Google Chrome to steal their data.

San Francisco, Feb 11 (Ians) Google’s latest Chrome beta version includes a trial for a feature that could enhance the browser’s picture-in-picture feature significantly and make it more useful.
The tech giant is considering allowing it to display virtually any web content in a floating window that stays on top of all users’ other windows, rather than just for playing videos, reports The Verge.
This feature, known as Document Picture-in-Picture, can be useful in a variety of ways.
There are some examples that Google gives based on how picture-in-picture already works, for example, video players that have custom UIs, or mini players for video conferences that show a grid of participants and allow you to mute yourself or raise your hand, according to the report.
The company also suggests the feature could be used to show a playlist for your music.

San Francisco, Feb 10 (Ians) Google on Friday launched its new ‘Immersive Stream for Xr’ service for all Google Cloud customers, with which users will not need any powerful hardware or a special application to be immersed in a 3D or augmented reality (Ar) world.
Users can click a link or scan a Qr code to immediately be transported to extended reality (Xr), the tech giant said in a blogpost.
“Immersive Stream for Xr is being used to power the ‘immersive view’ feature in Google Maps, while automotive and retail brands are enhancing at-home shopping experiences for consumers, from virtually configuring a new vehicle to visualizing new appliances in the home.”
Moreover, the new tool supports content developed in “Unreal Engine 5.0”.
In order to serve tablet and desktop devices, the company has also added the capability to render content in landscape mode.

Mozilla and Google are working on non-WebKit versions of the Firefox and Chrome iOS apps, suggesting that Apple will soon change its stringent guidelines for App Store browsers. Currently, all third-party browser apps on iOS and iPadOS have to use Apple's WebKit as the underlying browser engine. The rule prevented the iOS versions of Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox from using their own engines that are used on all other platforms. While Google Chrome is based on the Blink rendering engine, Firefox uses Gecko on Android, Windows, Mac, and Linux.
Mozilla has reportedly started work on a Gecko version of Firefox for iOS, while Google started work on a Blink-based Chrome a little while earlier. As reported by The Register, the latest development was revealed when code for an upcoming version of Firefox for iOS on Mozilla's GitHub repository was spotted containing references to GeckoView, a wrapper for Firefox's Gecko rendering engine.

San Francisco, Feb 4 (Ians) Tech giant Google is reportedly working on a new feature for Chrome which will allow users to erase the last 15 minutes of browsing data, on Android.
A new flag was found in Chrome for Android which indicated that the tech giant is working on a new feature called “quick delete”, reports Android Authority.
The new feature is likely to be available from the overflow menu located where the three vertical dots are in the top right corner.
However, it is still unclear whether the data being wiped would simply be browser history or all account activity, the report said.
In July 2021, the company had rolled out a similar feature to its mobile application, allowing users to instantly delete the last 15 minutes of browsing history.
Meanwhile, earlier this week, it was reported that the tech giant was working on a new way to easily translate text within images in Chrome.

San Francisco, Feb 1 (Ians) Tech giant Google is reportedly working on a new way to easily translate text within images in Chrome.
The information came from the Chrome feature researcher Leopeva64, reports Android Police.
The new image translation tool is not released yet, not even in Chrome Beta or Canary, as it is still under development.
Currently, Chrome allows the translation of entire web pages by just right-clicking on the desktop or tapping the menu button on mobile, then selecting the “Translate” option.
However, this does not work directly on posters, banners and other embedded images in web pages.
With the new feature, users will likely be able to right-click any images that contain text from a foreign language and choose the “Image translate” option to translate it, the report said.
Meanwhile, last week, it was reported that the tech giant is scrapping Chrome’s screenshot editing feature, after months of development.
