YouTube is on a multiyear crusade against ad blockers. In an effort to stop people from using browser plugins to get rid of ads, it’s escalated from sending “Hey, stop using those” nudges to completely shutting off their ability to see videos unless and until they disabled the blockers. And, most recently, we’ve seen reports that Chrome (the browser owned by YouTube parent Google) has apparently stopped supporting uBlock Origin, one of the most popular ad blockers on the market.

So what’s the deal? Well, YouTube relies on the ~$40 billion of ad revenue it earns each year. Creators get paid because YouTube gives them a portion of the revenue from ads run on their videos. We get it. But, at the same time, YouTube has been steadily increasing the amount of advertising across its platform, including 60-second unskippable ads and ads that pop up when you pause a video.

Shares of mighty Alphabet are down about 7% today after the U.S. Department of Justice said it should sell its Chrome web browser among other remedies after the tech giant lost a landmark antitrust case last summer.

Government lawyers said in a filing that splitting Google’s dominant search engine from Chrome, which controls about two-thirds of the browser market, as well as from its Android operating system, is necessary to ensure a competitive Internet.

A consumer privacy lawsuit seeking at least $5 billion in damages over allegations Google tracked users who thought they were browsing the internet privately has been settled. No terms have been disclosed.

The”incognito” mode on Google’s Chrome browser still followed users, as emails revealed during the trial proved. The data was used to sell ads.

The judge in the case confirmed a preliminary agreement to settle the class action lawsuit, originally filed in 2020.

Lawyers were seeking at least $5,000 for each member of the class that had been tracked by the firm’s Google Analytics or Ad Manager services while not logged into their Google account.

“When you’re trying to understand the ins and outs of a new topic, you often need to digest long or complex web pages, and it’s not always easy to hone in on specific details. So starting today, we’re launching an early experiment in Search Labs called “Sge while browsing”, available in the Google app on Android and iOS, and coming to Chrome on desktop in the days ahead,” Google said in a blogpost on Tuesday.

The websites included The New York Times, Instagram, Bluesky, Threads, Substack, among others, reports TechCrunch, citing sources.

On Tuesday, the platform seemed to be correcting this delayed access to websites.

There was a five-second delay in the web pages loading after clicking on links to these websites on X.

San Francisco, July 6 (Ians) Google has released the monthly security updates for the Android operating system, which come with fixes for 46 vulnerabilities, along with the fix for three actively exploited bugs.

“There are indications that the following (vulnerabilities) may be under limited, targeted exploitation — Cve-2023-26083, Cve-2021-29256, and Cve-2023-2136,” reads Android Security Bulletin.

According to BleepingComputer, Cve-2023-26083 is a medium-severity memory leak flaw in the Arm Mali Gpu driver for Bifrost, Avalon, and Valhall chips that was exploited in a December 2022 exploit chain that delivered spyware to Samsung devices.

Cve-2021-29256 is a critical (Cvss v3.1: 8.8) unprivileged information disclosure and root privilege escalation vulnerability that affects specific versions of the Bifrost and Midgard Arm Mali Gpu kernel drivers.

San Francisco, July 5 (Ians) Mozilla has released the last major Firefox browser update for old versions of Windows and macOS.

“In January 2023, Microsoft ended support for Windows 7 and Windows 8. As a consequence, this is the last version of Firefox that users on those operating systems will receive,” the company said in release notes on Tuesday.

Windows 7 and Windows 8 users will automatically be migrated to the Esr 115 version of Firefox so that they continue to receive important security updates.

San Francisco, June 10 (Ians) Google has issued a security update for the Chrome web browser to address the third zero-day vulnerability exploited by hackers this year. “Google is aware that an exploit for Cve-2023-3079 exists in the wild,” Google said in a blogpost.

The company has not released details about the exploit and how it was used in attacks, instead focusing on the severity and type of flaw.

“Access to bug details and links may be kept restricted until a majority of users are updated with a fix. We will also retain restrictions if the bug exists in a third-party library that other projects similarly depend on, but haven’t yet fixed,” the company said.

According to BleepingComputer, Cve-2023-3079 is a high-severity vulnerability discovered on June 1, 2023, by Google researcher Clement Lecigne. It is a type confusion in V8, Chrome’s JavaScript engine tasked with executing code within the browser.

San Francisco, June 9 (Ians) Tech giant Google has introduced new features for the Password Manager, including the ability to create a desktop shortcut.

Also, Google Password Manager now has a dedicated home in Chrome on desktop which makes it easier for users to review their saved online credentials or change their password settings, the tech giant said in a blogpost on Thursday.

Currently only available on mobile, biometric authentication is coming soon to desktop.

“If you enable this feature, you can require an additional layer of security before Chrome autofills your password, like fingerprint recognition, facial recognition or other methods supported by your computer’s operating system,” it added.

Now, users can also add notes to the credentials they save in the Password Manager which will help them to keep all of their important login details in one place.

“We’re updating the Google Meet picture-in-picture experience to be more engaging and feature-rich,” the tech giant said in a Workspace Updates blogpost on Wednesday.

Directly from the picture-in-picture window, users can now raise their hand, turn captions on and off, access flexible layouts, and more.

San Francisco, May 28 (Ians) To enhance users’ browsing experience, the desktop version of Google Chrome’s side panel will soon introduce support for Manifest V3 extensions that aim to display an interface.

Manifest V3 (or Manifest Version 3) is the latest iteration of the Chrome extension platform.

Max makes several subtle enhancements aimed at making the service easier to use and more engaging — while execs say it should also be more stable than HBO Max.

According to the company, a “large portion” of HBO Max subscribers will have their apps automatically updated to Max — while in some cases, users will be prompted to download an updated Max app. If all goes as planned, HBO Max subscribers will have their previous plan info, profiles, avatars, and settings including “Continue Watching” and “My List” items migrated over to the new Max.

San Francisco, May 4 (Ians) Meta (formerly Facebook) has said that it had discovered malware creators who are taking advantage of the public’s interest in ChatGPT and using this interest to entice users into downloading harmful applications and browser extensions.

Meta has compared this phenomenon to cryptocurrency scams, as both tactics exploit people’s curiosity and trust to gain access to sensitive information.

The company said they have found around 10 malware families posing as ChatGPT and similar tools to compromise accounts across the internet.

“Over the past several months, we’ve investigated and taken action against malware strains taking advantage of people’s interest in OpenAI’s ChatGPT to trick them into installing malware pretending to provide AI functionality,” Meta writes in its Q3 2023 security report.

San Francisco, April 7 (Ians) Google has announced that WebGPU, an Api (Application Programming Interface) which allows high-performance 3D graphics and data-parallel computation on the web, is now available by default in Chrome 113, which is currently in the Beta channel.

“WebGPU is a new web graphics Api that offers significant benefits such as greatly reduced JavaScript workload for the same graphics and more than three times improvements in machine learning model inferences,” Google said in a blogpost.
