This superb clip is taken from Jonathan Demme's classic register of the glorious Talking Heads' concert "Stop Making Sense", and somehow MTV and similar networks decided to present this video instead of the one with David Byrne and those crazed special effects. However, Byrne's performance in front of a large audience is exactly like the one he did in the previous clip, with some altering and with the help of his band mates' explosive sound. Pure magic and a real proof that a quality group can turn an iconic fictional concept into a live reality.
Despite the darkness and with minor of use of light, Demme captured Byrne's trademarks from the "Once in a Lifetime" original clip: the spasmodic dance, 1950's style of glasses and those gigantic suits - quite an amazing feat for the singer, specially if you've seen "Stop Making Sense" you can notice Byrne changing of outfits in between songs. He brings the magic and the craziness of a previous form and presents as another magic event to that lucky audience who saw them performing live and to us watching it many years later. I don't think I ever seen a rock group or other kind of musical groups puling a stunt like that - unless they use of big screens and present the clip or use of sound effects. This one was fabulous, they recreated the video and proved that David Byrne had all that presence and energy in store to share and deliver a spectacle.
If you still haven't seen Demme's documentary or isn't much fan of the genre (it's a concert folks!), I suggest you to have a peak at this clip first and then move to that music masterpiece that shows Talking Heads at their best moment, one of the top groups of late 1970's and 1980's. Pure delight. 9/10 RIP Jonathan Demme. Thank you for the memories, comments, films, documentaries and the video clips like this one and others. (A Luta Continua)
