There's an extremely strong case to be made in favor of John Carpenter being dubbed the master of horror. Although 2010's "The Ward" was Carpenter's last feature film foray into the genre (along with producing the "Halloween" reboot trilogy), the director's diverse oeuvre is profound enough to sustain us for the ages. Sure, every horror-head would love for Carpenter to helm another project, but for now, all we can do is cherish what we have and hope for the best. In the meantime, we can also talk about an underrated horror gem that Carpenter absolutely adores.
When asked about contemporary horror and its ability to scare him, Carpenter told Comic Book that it is hard for him to distance himself from the lens of a filmmaker while watching them, and scrutinize "the plumbing" of modern horror. However, Carpenter considers a film scary if it is able to bypass these instincts...

Following on the success of the “10 Years” series which features Thailand and Hong Kong editions among others, comes the latest iteration which sees five Burmese filmmakers coming together to conceptualize on the future they envision for their country. The anthology series of five short films is a visual package of this combined thought space, packaged in stylistic arthouse omnibus which is “10 Years Myanmar”.
Ten Years Myanmar is screening at Taiwan International Documentary Film Festival
The first film is “A City of Bougainvillea” by Thaiddhi. A blossoming love between a young couple sees them enjoying sweet nothings atop the city heights. But there is an uncomfortable silence in the air- for the boy might not even be real. The movie that starts of the anthology is perhaps the most poignant one. A morose and dark take on identity and belonging, which is rife with symbolism and leaves a lot to interpretat.

“The Worst Person in the World,” Horror Version, this one is not. For their first post-“Worst Person” team-up, stars Renate Reinsve and Anders Danielsen Lie have taken on a human story of a different cast: a zombie tale. What’s more about life than a story about life after death?
Directed by first-time feature filmmaker Thea Hvistendahl, Reinsve and Danielsen Lie both star in “Handling the Undead,” the filmmaker’s adaptation of author John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel of the same name. For fans of the writer’s work, like both “Let the Right One In,” the film and the show, “Handling the Undead” should feel both familiar and welcome. (The author also assisted Hvistendahl with her script.)
The film follows a trio of Norwegian families as they grapple with their beloved (and very recently dead) members suddenly coming back to life.

A grandfather quietly grieves over the fresh, newly dug grave of his preteen grandson. An elderly woman quietly mourns the passage of her life partner. A husband sits at the hospital bedside of the body of his wife. Separated by time and distance, each character, in their turn, faces a heart-shattering, soul-crushing, life-altering change for the worse in Norway’s capital city, Oslo, leaving their lives, individually and collectively, irrevocably devoid of purpose or meaning in Thea Hvistendahl’s deceptively quiet, stunningly brilliant adaptation of John Ajvide Lindqvist’s (Let the Right One In) novel of the same name, Handling the Undead (Håndtering av udød). With influences ranging from George A. Romero’s original Dead trilogy, Stephen King’s Pet Semetary, to the more recent French series, The Returned, and...

The prolific film critic called Tomas Alfredson's "Let the Right One In" the best modern vampire movie upon its release, still relevant praise over a decade later. The movie is many things — sweet, compassionate, bloody, and supremely dark. Vampirism is what connects two outcast children, as they perform unspeakable acts for the benefit of each other. Alfredson stays in command of a vampire tale that's often an emotional journey first, relying on adolescent actors who shoulder the beloved international hit.

Hot off her role in Amazon Prime’s buzzy Them, Anika Noni Rose has boarded the pilot for Let the Right One In, Showtime‘s “elevated genre series” inspired by the 2004 Swedish vampire novel (by John Ajvide Lindqvist) and subsequent 2008 film.
The prospective series follows a father, Mark (played by The Bridge‘s Demián Bichir), and his 12-year-old daughter, whose lives were changed forever 10 years earlier when she was turned into a vampire. Since age 12 (and perhaps forever), Eleanor lives a closed-in life, able to go out only at night, while her father does his best to provide her with...

Michael Almereyda has tackled science (as a topic of either biopics or dramas) in a fascinating way in “Experimenter” and “Marjorie Prime,” and now he’s bringing that same energy to the inventor-biopic with “Tesla” (Shout Factory/IFC), a bold and audacious look at the life of Nikola Tesla. Ethan Hawke, in the title role, is evenly matched by Eve Hewson’s Anne Morgan, and they both nail Almereyda’s unique tone, which throws in anachronisms and green-screens to tell the story of someone who stretched the notions of what his peers imagined could be possible.
Also available: Madison Iseman plays a young girl with mental-health issues who can’t convince anyone she’s witnessed a crime in “Fear of Rain” (Lionsgate); 2012 indie “Watching TV with the Red Chinese” (Mvd Visual), co-starring Constance Wu and Gillian Jacobs, makes its U.S. DVD debut; Sienna Miller and Diego Luna...

You might think there’s a world of difference between producing and directing a series in the unscripted world and writing and directing a feature film, but you’d be wrong. There’s a pretty significant overlap in both genres, and the skills I learned in the former actually gave me an advantage in the latter.
I began my career in entertainment in the early 1990s as a creative exec working on television comedies and dramas, but eventually got sidetracked into the genre of unscripted entertainment. Reality TV was just beginning to surface and so I created a number of shows, including “Making the Band” and “America’s Next Top Model.” Producing these shows in that era of television was an amazing learning experience, especially in the early years.

An imaginative romance comes with surprising conditions in the upcoming Lionsgate release “The Right One.” In the film, a case of writer’s block leads one novelist to meet a mysterious stranger. Cases of writer’s block seem to be a recent go-to strategy for filmmakers—Steven Soderbergh’s “Let Them Talk” is a fantastic example with writer Deborah Eisenberg positioning it as more than a character trait.

Godfrey's coping mechanism keeps him sane, but he's a man who has completely lost the idea of who he is. Enter Sara Dash, a smart, insightful writer with writer's block who struggles with her own sense of self.
