Vicente Fernández, the indisputable king of traditional Mexican ranchera music, will get the biopic series treatment from a joint production between Univision and Televisa. The two Spanish-language mass media companies will adapt the series from the book “El Último Rey” (“The Last King”) by Argentine journalist and author Olga Wornat. Televisa reached an agreement with Editorial Planeta to acquire the rights to the unauthorized biography of “El Charro de Huentitán’s” life.

After a fruitful career selling over 50 million records and appearing in more than 30 films, the successful musician and businessman died Dec. 12, 2021. He was 81 and survived by his wife, Maria del Refugio Abarca Villaseñor, his three children and the thousands of admirers he amassed globally who mourned his loss. Fernández had been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare autoimmune disease that attacks the nerves, and his health had taken a turn for the worse in his final months.

The 78th Venice International Film Festival (Sept. 1-11) will include an out of competition screening of “Ennio” by Giuseppe Tornatore, director of the Oscar winning “Cinema Paradiso.” “Ennio” is a comprehensive portrait of two time Oscar winning composer Ennio Morricone, among the most influential and prolific musicians of the twentieth century, who has scored over 500 movie soundtracks.

The documentary tells the Maestro’s story in a long interview of him with Tornatore, and with comments by artists and directors such as Bernardo Bertolucci, Giuliano Montaldo, Marco Bellocchio, Dario Argento, the Taviani brothers, Carlo Verdone, Barry Levinson, Roland Joffé, Oliver Stone, Quentin Tarantino, Bruce Springsteen, Nicola Piovani, Hans Zimmer and Pat Metheny, and through music and archive footage.

NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises is launching a production unit catering to surging demand for programming beyond the confines of linear TV.

Telemundo Streaming Studios is billed as the first production unit in Hispanic media exclusively dedicated to serving the growing Latino streaming audiences in the U.S. and globally.

Telemundo’s roster of streaming titles includes El Señor de los Cielos, La Reina del Sur, El Recluso, No Te Puedes Esconder, Jugar con Fuego. Among more recent additions are Dime Quien Soy, 100 Dias para Enamorarnos, Falsa Identidad and Mariposa de Barrio.

In addition to developing and producing its own projects, the new studio will offer production services to direct-to-consumer platforms.

“iCarly,” Nickelodeon’s mid-aughts sitcom starring Miranda Cosgrove, Jennette McCurdy, Nathan Kress and Jerry Trainor, found a new home on Netflix on Feb. 8., and with that second life a new generation. Per Nielsen rating insights based on their weekly SVOD Top 10 lists, the family-friendly comedy was a favorite among the ages 2 to 17 crowd during the first week of its debut on the streamer. Across its 60 episodes currently available to watch on the platform, “iCarly” garnered 883 million viewing minutes and landed in third place on the acquired content list and in fifth on the overall programming list.

In addition to the overall programming and acquired content lists, the global marketing research firm will also be pushing out weekly Top 10 lists that take into consideration original programming and movies in an effort to provide an expanded and more inclusive look at most streamed programs for that given week.
