Lynda wanted Paige to quit dance and go to college because she was trying to protect her. Lynda was afraid that Paige wouldn't pass her ballet auditions. Lynda didn't want to see Paige get hurt.
In real life Lynda would have pressed charges against Glenn for letting Paige come do dance without her permission. Lynda also would have been charged with child abuse for hitting Paige and sent to jail. Derek then would have gotten custody of Paige and Alex until Lynda got her anger under control through counseling.
Running away is illegal and dangerous. Paige would have been caught by the police in real life.
