Yes, Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell were this year’s big surprises — but the 2022 Newport Folk Festival contained so much more than a pair of jaw-dropping legends. The first full-capacity iteration of the fest since 2019 featured the desert instrumentals of Hermanos Gutiérrez, the soulful country-pop of Maren Morris, the sweet blues of Taj Mahal, the indie electronic of Sylvan Esso (who debuted a brand-new album), and the scaled-down arena rock of the National, who also premiered brand-new material in their headlining set. Taken in full, this year’s festival represented...

“I just realized, Joni’s the least nervous person up here,” exclaimed Brandi Carlile halfway through a history Newport Folk Festival set that paid tribute to Joni Mitchell, in her first full set-length concert appearance in two decades.
Over 13 songs, Mitchell, who last appeared at the festival 53 years ago, in 1969, held court as a star-studded crew of musicians (Carlile, Blake Mills, Lucius, Wynonna, Celisse, Taylor Goldsmith, Marcus Mumford, and many more) sat around on couches on-stage playing a mix of her favorite oldies (“Why Do Fools Fall in Love,” “Love Potion No.

After twenty years honing his craft on ever-more precise filmic constructions, David Lean opened up his imagination for a story of loneliness and romance in Venice, Italy. A vacationing American woman searches for — she doesn’t know what. Katharine Hepburn reveals the vulnerable side of her personality, and the woman eventually leaves her fears behind. Lean creates the most compelling ‘relaxed vacation’ ever, yet every shot is as keenly envisioned as in any of his films. It’s an amazing ‘on location’ show that initially ran into trouble with U.S. censors — some thought it was morally incompatible with the Production Code, and shouldn’t be released here at all.

Exclusive: Vertical Entertainment has tapped Good Deed Entertainment’s Kristin Harris for the newly created position of Senior Vice President, Production and Development.
Harris will lead the company’s emerging production and development arm, reporting to Vertical Partners Peter Jarowey and Rich Goldberg beginning March 14. She most recently served as Executive Vice President, Distribution and Operations for the boutique studio Good Deed, there overseeing and managing all content and distribution operations for a slate of six to 10 films per year, including Extra Ordinary, Lucky Grandma, Summertime, Ma Belle, My Beauty and the Academy Award-nominated Loving Vincent.
“It should come as no surprise, film financing is a key area of expansion for us, and frankly, for all of our competitors across the globe. Summertime nostalgia, romantic look backs at what might’ve been and reflecting on the halcyon days of youth. Written, directed, produced by and starring Edward Burns (“The Brothers McMullen,” “She’s The One,” Epix’s “Bridge and Tunnel”), the new drama, “Summer Days, Summer Nights,” is definitely sentimental for the past, the mistakes made, the loves found, and the friendships and seminal moments in our life shared.

“Summertime” follows the lives of several underprivileged angelenos in the span of a single day. We witness them eating and searching for a specific burger chain, visiting therapists and councillors, hustling in the rap game, and battling their demons, all of it delivered by a group of young poets from LA in a way reminiscent of a musical but using slam poetry instead of song.
Had Carlos Lopez focused only on taking the conventions of musicals such as “La La Land” and subverting them using poetry instead of song, “Summertime” would’ve been a much more coherent film. Instead, he tries to make an inspirational hyperlink film which...

"Have you forgotten where we are!?" Good Deed Ent. has released an official trailer for Summertime, one of the Opening Night films at last year's Sundance Film Festival. This ensemble piece features poetry and performances by 25 young Angelenos, in stories that intersect and intertwine as they make their way around the city. Born of the director's mind-blowing interaction with a workshop where performers from across the City of Angels recited fearlessly personal texts, the project was structured so that their voices could shine as well as coalesce in the context of a larger, unified, and gloriously moving narrative experiment — part urban musical and part sociological art. It is a showcase of young spoken word artists directed by Blindspotting's Carlos López Estrada, who carefully brings together their voices in one vibrant feature film. Starring Tyris Winter, Marquesha Babers, Maia Mayor, Austin Antoine, Bryce Banks, Amaya Blankenship, Bene't Benton, Gordon Ip,...

Katharine Hepburn would’ve celebrated her 112th birthday on May 12, 2019. With four Oscars victories in Best Actress, Hepburn holds the record for the most wins by any performer, but how many of her titles remain classics? In honor of her birthday, let’s take a look back at 20 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1907, Hepburn got her start on the stage before setting her sights on Hollywood, winning her first Oscar for playing an aspiring Broadway star in “Morning Glory” (1933). Despite this early success, Hepburn found herself labeled “box office poison” after a series of flops throughout the decade. She returned to theater with “The Philadelphia Story,” and the 1940 film version provided her with a big screen comeback from which she never faltered.

Singer-songwriter Jessica Pratt hails from California — both Southern and Northern — and her first LP pegged her as one part late-Sixties Laurel Canyon, one part early 2000s freak folk. Her style blossomed on her 2015 follow-up, On Your Own Love Again, with stranger melodies (one song is even called “Strange Melody”) and spacier arrangements. Quiet Signs, her third LP, expands her sound still further. “Opening Night” begins with a piano incantation, idly conjuring Satie’s Gymnopédies and Gershwin’s “Summertime.” It segueways into “As The World Turns,” echoing the same chords, but...

Exclusive: The travails, injuries and controversies that led the New York Mets to cut ties with one-time can’t-miss pitcher Matt Harvey reminds how rare the career of Mets great Tom Seaver really was. Edward Burns, the Brothers McMullen director who is a lifelong Mets fan, is working with the Hall of Fame pitcher to direct a feature documentary on Seaver’s career and his role with the fabled 1969 Miracle Mets. That was as unlikely as man landing on the moon, the year when a franchise lovable in futility won 100 games and beat the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles to win the World Series.
